I chipped my favourite cup the other day. Silly really: i knocked it against another cup while placing it on the drying rack. I immediately set out to make tea while moaning and bemoaning my now lost beloved cup. Interestingly, while sipping my tea and watching the morning sun catch the now chipped gold rim….She looked… new again. Special, because while there may have been quite a few like her at the store.. She was the only one in the entire _world_ with this beautiful marking. Not everything has to perfectly match ❤
It's funny how in 2023 we've been conditioned to view cheap disposable furniture of IKEA as stylish and luxurious, when our 1-2 generations ago those kind of furnitures were meant for teens and college students dorms, and people bought sturdy crafted stuff that lasted a lifetime
I am downsizing and could get nobody to take my solid walnut headboard and footboard and bedframe. It was, probably 100 years old, but solid as a rock. All it needed was a refinish, and it would be fine. The Salvation Army said it was “too old” so they wouldn’t take it. I was shocked. I wound up having to throw it out.
Always a informative video, thanks... my cure for the issue... I already have everything I need. I don't go out shopping, I would rather be outdoors taking a walk instead of being and a mall. Thanks again many people need to hear your message.
Going outdoors is a wonderful alternative to going shopping, especially when you're going to the mall just to pass the time. Thanks for watching, Neil! 😊
Peter, thank you for this video. Getting rid of unnecessary stuff, distractions and having a happier life is a new focus of mine. I happily subscribed and am looking forward to your future videos.
Love your content, man. I've been going minimalist for a couple years now and i've cleansed my phone during the pandemic, so I have nothing to do on it anymore. But still I need some stuff to keep my mind at easy to deal with depression and panic attacks. One day I hope to have a flat as clean as yours
This is a really informative video! Thank you Peter for sharing this. I love how you explained well the concept of Didero Effect, its impact to us, and how to avoid it. I'm new to the concept of slow living and I think this is one of the important things that we may not often observe especially in acquiring new stuff. I hope you upload more videos like this. More power to you! 😊
What an interesting concept. I've experienced the Diderot effect so many times in my life, not only with material possessions but also in other aspects, and now I know that has a name. Thank you for another great video! :)
I only learned about the Diderot effect recently as well. Thought it was such an interesting idea that I made a video about it. Thanks for watching! 🙌🏻
Diderot effect. That's the name! Lucky I am not this kind of person. But I agree with you about buying a good quality for the things that you really need like your laptop.
Very true. I follow 1 in and 1 out policy to avoid this. At times, I donate or give away my most favorite items, which I don't use it. Thanks for sharing.
Nice one! I've read one time about this businessman, who gifted an expensive sports car to his most talented and successful salesmen. Once a lad got this shiny new car, he was embarrassed to bring it to his poor neighborhood. He doubled or tripled his efforts in order to sell more, thus increasing his income (and the businessman's revenues) and later moving to a more high-income neighborhood :))
When I get the urge to buy something, I try to wait for a month if it's a substantial purchase. After that month, ususally, I realize that I don't need it at all. Thanks for the great video, Peter.
I intend to make a few videos about financial minimalism. I also just read The Psychology of Money by Morgan House, have you read it? Such an insightful book! Will definitely make a video about that book. Take care!
Step #1 - Purchase everything you don’t need to fulfill the Diderot Effect Step #2 - Downsize and sell it off Step #3 - Calculate how much $$$ you lost and think about what experiences you could have spent the $$$ on Step #4 - Never experience the Diderot Effect again
What's your best tip for overcoming the Diderot effect?

As a minimalist, would you consider owning a home versus renting one?
When I get the urge to buy something, I try to wait for a month if it's a substantial purchase. After that month, ususally, I realize that I don't need it at all. Thanks for the great video, Peter.
