Monster Motor for the Monster Monarch More Power With Less Energy?

  • In this video I introduce the Baldor 405U motor I bought to put on the monster Monarch Series 90. According to the data specs the power factor on this motor means it uses a good bit less electricity to produce mechanical work than the old motor probably did. I get it reconfigured and all wired up and test if it will actually start off my phase converter and existing electrical system. Thanks for Watching!

One thing about monster machinery - parts cost monster prices. And sometimes the money ain’t to get the parts you need.
I started at Ford as an Engineering co-op and spent 3 months at the Dearborn Engine Plant. They made the FE engine series there (352 thru 427 plus truck versions.) The head faces and pan rail + half rounds (main bearing saddles) were broached by huge 30 ft long broaches that were powered by huge 500 hp GE electric motors. One day the broach motor burned out. That was the spare. The first motor was back at GE for rebuild. The millwrights were told turnaround would be 6 weeks! The plant manager got involved and GE told him to go to the end of the line and WAIT because every motor in line to be rebuilt was a super special critical hot rush job and the GE facility was the only one that worked on those big motors!
Luckily, the DEP Manager was able to borrow a motor from the Cleveland Engine Plant.

The strangest motor i ever saw was a 300 hp 220 volt three phase , INSIDE a controlled atmosphere furnace . It ran a fan to circulate the argon purge . Voltage was low because of insulation viability at the 1800 degrees in the furnace . Double 500 mcm leads per phase , connected with copper studs through a glass window in the wall of the furnace . The starter was about the size of a minivan !
