I would have never known Comic Sumo existed, had I not seen this video. And to me, it just opens my eyes to how broad and in-depth the combat sport can be. And with you explaining some of the moves that are legal, that we don't see in a regular match, that adds to the depth.
These guys actually had me laughing, they are just as tired at the end as they would be fighting two matches in a row. Perhaps they will be picked for the ‘comedy duo’ every time and make a little extra cash. So: Leap frogging is legal, boxing is legal, haven’t seen the butt cheek one. Having the Gyoji in on it is hilarious too. Thx Chris
@@lolz476 Well, they "missed" every punch, so it was still within the rules. In practice, not much difference in power. Boxers punch harder, but they can afford it, because they bind their hands. Bare knuckle punches done very hard often damage both parties to similar degree.
I know it's missing the point of this video to comment this specifically, but that clip of Hakuho Sho all the way back at the rope, just perched like a bird of prey, that distance between the two men almost symbolic of the breadth of the chasm between the men as wrestlers, and in strategy.
Someone once told me that Mr. Bean can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of the language they speak. I feel like this is similar :) It also reminds me of the time I saw the Harlem Globetrotters (a comedy basketball team). Although we rarely see this sort of exaggerated slapstick comedy today, it has been an important part of the human experience for a very long time. Can you imagine living in an era before TV or even radio, and seeing something like comic sumo? I don't think I would ever forget it.
I can't look at that toy mallet in the dohyo and not be reminded of Shobushi. That gyoji doing the 'shimpan verdict' is one of the main PA announcers during the basho? His voice is very familiar.
It's always a pleasure to watch and listen. I wonder how much you can innovate on this craft. Some are basic gags, but others must be the rikishi's personal touch.
This is my favorite part of the day's tournament. Because it's a little different each day it doesn't get old. Some wrestlers in past put so much effort into it you would wonder how they didn't get hurt.
This kinda feels like Sumo low key roasting the theatre drama of western pro wresting, and I'm okay with that 😆 It's also just seems like a nice way family friendly of easing people into the sport. I like it.
I love this! Its shows a different side. In bouts they mostly do not show any emotions. And its also impressive how nimble and atleathic these guys are.
Thx very much, very interesting. It is always amazing to see how different Japanese culture is. The solemn way sumo is conducted, the sacred dohjo and priest-like gyoji, yet all these can be involved in something like this!
I miss the power water gag, although I understand why they're not doing it right now. I hope it comes back someday. The salt bit is not quite as funny. Chris, is the gyoji normally one from the wrestlers'' stable? I would assume he has to rehearse as well. Also, is there a reason that they wear the oichomage rather than the chonmage? Not that I am complaining about it!
Except they're not sekitori. None of the guys featured here has ever made it out of makushita. A couple have never made it into makushita. (These are probably from the recent retirement ceremonies.)
Takagenji and Takanofuji did a routine together. It's interesting to see two guys who look and sound exactly alike doing this. Takagenji made it to Makuuchi and Takanofuji made it to Juryo. th-cam.com/video/mo2usdetITc/w-d-xo.html I read somewhere that highly talented rikishi don't generally get involved with this, because rehearsal time takes away from training time.
I think this to be a nice entertaining way to show some things that u cannot see in regular matches. Really fun too. Buuuut would also be super cool of they actually fought one real bout in the end
Was Hidenoumi once a part of the comedy routine? If so perhaps a bit about the forbidden nature of gambling should be added. I do miss Hide and hope he will be successful upon his return. Also I wonder if the rikishi are rotated regularly such that many participate or is it just a select few and how are they selected?
there were some rikishi years ago that did a really amazing comedy sumo routine, super acrobatic and extremely well timed… can’t remember their names tho :*(
What levels are these wrestlers drawn from? Clearly they're below Juryo; I assume once they reach salaried level it would be considered beneath their station?
Kawamoto still tossed more salt than Ura
It looks like a Terutsuyoshi versus Ura match.
This is actually remarkably funny. As an internet sumo fan I wish I'd seen this sooner.
Nathan if you like to see the full version here it is, Enjoy with Shobushi
th-cam.com/video/Kgq4zhnwp9w/w-d-xo.html
what I also like is it shows their athleticism and dexterity with all those rolls
The more I know about Sumo, the funnier this really well made gag becomes!
Salt "gag", huh. Terutsuyoshi vs Ura
My thoughts exactly.
Ok, the mallet coming out of the gyoji's uniform was pretty funny.
Tiny salt throw gag gets me every time

With how serious they always are about sumo its good to see some comedy

Slapping is legal - closed fist boxing is not!

They should've forced Asanoyama to do comic Sumo for a whole basho instead banning him half a year lol
I love the gyoji faithfully calling "still in" while the guys dance in a circle, arm in arm. 🤣
And never forget Shobushi, for many of us an introduction through your channel to comic sumo.
The ref’s voice during the torinaoshi announcement was fantastic
When the gyoji threw the rikishi down! 😂

The prop mishaps just add to the comedy.
The American equivalent would be the Harlem Globetrotters.
I had always thought that was rice sumo were throwing into the dohyo. What a great concept for teaching about Sumo.
This is fantastic, thank you :) We need Japanese for "He's behind you!"
2:15 Teru's reaction face is funnier than anything in the comic routines
I think he's learning!
you know who hakuho fought against?

The eyebrows going up are priceless.
Thanks again Chris!
Very funny to see, and to hear the children laughing in the background is a delight.

Love it. Even when you are learning about Sumo when you first start to watch, the comic sumo is funny.
I always wanted to learn more about comic sumo. Thank you!
Awww missing Shobushi ❤️💐💐😩😔

I wasn't completely unaware of this side of Sumo! I respect it.

Very educational
But very funny xD

Hangosan felnevettem a poénokon, szuper volt!
Reminds me of Larry, Curly and Moe😂
Thanks so much Chris!

Thank you! I like your videos a lot! Very clear communicated and passionate ;)

Well, no, I've never seen comic sumo before, nor was I even aware that this is a thing, so thanks for lightening me up!

They're both sekitori, and this was probably filmed at a honbasho. Then they're required to wear oichomage.
Except they're not sekitori. None of the guys featured here has ever made it out of makushita. A couple have never made it into makushita. (These are probably from the recent retirement ceremonies.)
The Savannah Bananas/Harlem Globetrotters of sumo. I love it!
Their gags reminded of the Japanese comedy organization matches from pro wrestlers like Kikutaro, Ebessan and Kuishinbo Kamen. 😂
Oh I love this!
As insightful as always Chris, thanks for this video it has been something I’ve been curious about for some time now. Love your content!
Absolutely terrific video, Chris! Thank you so very much!
This is actually really funny. The best part was the mallet
So funny! Really enjoyed. Thanks Chris.
Hilarious ! Loved it all, thanks again Chris! 🤣😂🤣
I have loved kabuki and sumo for many years. This was hilarious!!!
I didn't know this existed and it made my day.
Thank you, this is a very nice explanation of the what and why. It makes sense now.
Since they are wearing the traditional hair style. Do I assume right that it has to be performed by active Rikishi?
This was golden! Thanks for sharing
This sport has everything. I love it
Ooohh, it's Comic sumo gags, I read Cosmic sumo gaps, really confused for a second there.
Can we talk about the face of terunofuji in the hakuho vs shodai match? when he looks to the public...
They always make me laugh
Have there been comic sumo artists that ever progressed to the upper ranks?
Unsurprisingly, Akua's done it. His partner was Takakento.
I remember Chris mentioning that even one Yokozuna did comic sumo at the beginning of his career. I can't remember who it was though.
@@repeahlfors9951 It was future Chairman Tochinishiki.

Ah, WWE at its finest...
Wasn’t there a Yokozuna that used to do comedy sumo?
How dare people have fun
Haha that last attendant has been around for ages, floppy black hair and a red acne'd nose... Not surprised he ballsed it up :P
I saw a video of a guy who did a Salt Bae during the throw haha
The Gjoyi has a beautiful voice I must say.

I laughed way too hard at the salt gag
C'mon Chris! It's not funny when you have to explain it!
Seriously, thanks for all the work you do to explain the sport.
Gag about salt.
Terutsuyoshi has entered the chat.

Cool. Do they do this every tournament? You can hear kids laughing.
Is this a traditional part of Sumo? I'd hate for it to turn into WWE.
