    This is what happens when ministerial breaches are not dealt with properly. You get serial liars who repeatedly mislead and misinform the Commons and the people.

      100%. If you or I were found to have deliberately misled our employers about something relating to our work, we'd be sacked or at the very least be dragged into a disciplinary process. Braverman has already breached the ministerial code twice and shows no sign of having learned her lesson. She'll do it again and again and again because there are no consequences.

      @@indivisible4835 Due process would have allowed the speaker to ask for clarification on the wording used by the home secretary, so that the statistics could be clarified and maybe highlighted the point that she didn't break the rules and may indeed have been correct in what she had said. Is there a ministerial code stating that one has to adhere to presenting statistical information to Parliament solely based on the base ten system? I thought not.🙄

      'Interpretation of statistics.' If the Home Secrecy had predicted that the actual number of the backlog would be 189,000 then based on her prediction the actual number really is down 17,000. Maybe if Suella had rounded her prediction of the backlog up to 200,000 she would have been able to announce an even bigger figure of it being 28,000 down. Or 500,000 predicted against 172,000 and we're working miracles over here.

    Yvette Cooper said that the figures under discussion were clearly defined by the Home Office. It is not a matter of interpretation, Braverman misled parliament. Not for the last time I’m sure.

      The Deputy Speaker has no powers or role with regard to the Ministerial Code. The Prime Minister is the arbiter of the Code. Does this mean that the government gets to mark its own homework? Yes.

      Yep, I don't fully blame the Deputy Speaker, I blame the terrible system. A system which relies on the honour and honesty of members and disallows calling people out for not having honour or honesty is a flawed system. A system where the referee is given barely any means to enforce rules is a flawed system. There is no power or authority to hold people to account in Parliament, the opposition isn't even allowed to point out when the government blatantly lie, which can only encourage lying.

    No point in having a ministerial code if breaking it is the routine, as it appears in recent years. Lying to parliament and not correcting the record should be treated as a criminal offence similar to that of perjury.

    "If a minister has made a mistake in the house, I would of course expect them to correct it.", imo there lies the problem with British politics, it all lacks consequences. You can not just "expect" an apology or correction from a tory, especially if it benefits them not to correct it. They must be forced. This ministerial code is pointless if nothing is ever done when it is broken. We NEED change!

    Which carries the greater punishment in parliament, knowingly lying or misleading, deliberately or unintentionally, or calling someone a liar? We all know the moment anyone calls out the lies or calling a liar, the speaker suddenly orders them to retract it or can be removed, yet when they know someone is lying, they let it pass and say it's interpretation of statistics and open for debate. Honestly, parliament needs dismantling and a new system replacing it. That will only happen if we force it to, we basically need an army of Guy Fawkes.

      @@timfairhurst1741 I completely agree. We can never be idle when exposing the deep-seated corruption within our political system, even if they are long past caring about accountability. The most important thing we can do is make sure they get absolutely obliterated at the general election. Send a clear message that this type of gutter politics and behaviour should be wiped away and confined to the history books, never to be repeated.

    ...and the Deputy Speaker's response just demonstrates the gaping chasm in our Parliament. "Differing interpretations of statistics" really? This is taking the proverbials, it's not a matter of opinion or interpretation, these are figures, figures produced at the behest of the Government themselves.
    The Home Secretary lied, again, plain and simple.

    The speaker's office are rather 'toothless' are they not? A requirement that the minister in question is not able to present or answer questions before rebutting such claims would seem to be in order. Deliberately lying to Parliament (as suggested) requires consequences.
