This is what happens when ministerial breaches are not dealt with properly. You get serial liars who repeatedly mislead and misinform the Commons and the people.
100%. If you or I were found to have deliberately misled our employers about something relating to our work, we'd be sacked or at the very least be dragged into a disciplinary process. Braverman has already breached the ministerial code twice and shows no sign of having learned her lesson. She'll do it again and again and again because there are no consequences.

What a weak response by this deputy speaker. This opens up the way for lots and lots of more cases of giving the two fingers to parlaiment and due diligence.

@@indivisible4835 Due process would have allowed the speaker to ask for clarification on the wording used by the home secretary, so that the statistics could be clarified and maybe highlighted the point that she didn't break the rules and may indeed have been correct in what she had said. Words matter.

'Interpretation of statistics.' If the Home Secrecy had predicted that the actual number of the backlog would be 189,000 then based on her prediction the actual number really is down 17,000. Maybe if Suella had rounded her prediction of the backlog up to 200,000 she would have been able to announce an even bigger figure of it being 28,000 down. Or 500,000 predicted against 172,000 and we're working miracles over here.

Yvette Cooper said that the figures under discussion were clearly defined by the Home Office. It is not a matter of interpretation, Braverman misled parliament. Not for the last time I’m sure.

The Deputy Speaker has a track record for not enforcing any breaches of the ministerial code. Allows members to make a decision on whether facts or opinions should count as truth.
If she did, she wouldn't receive her sparkly life peerage like Bercow
The Deputy Speaker has no powers or role with regard to the Ministerial Code. The Prime Minister is the arbiter of the Code. Does this mean that the government gets to mark its own homework? Yes.

We need PR and we need real people from society placed in parliment as part of public service - just like the jury system. We need a full constitution that can hold liar MPs to account, otherwise democracy fails.
What a joke parliament is. Anyone accusing someone of telling a lie is asked to retract the statement. Anyone who’s actually lies gets a free pass.
The trouble with an honor based parliamentary system is it relies on those within it to act with honor. Johnson proved that it doesn't work when MP's have no morals.
Yep, I don't fully blame the Deputy Speaker, I blame the terrible system. A system which relies on the honour and honesty of members and disallows calling people out for not having honour or honesty is a flawed system. A system where the referee is given barely any means to enforce rules is a flawed system. There is no power or authority to hold people to account in Parliament, the opposition isn't even allowed to point out when the government blatantly lie, which can only encourage lying.
@@lunaxquinn It's assumed the public will not vote for people with no morals. It's only in the last decade we've seen the integrity of parliament abused to such an extent in my opinion. Still find it ironic that calling someone "honorable member" when they blatantly are not makes most MP's liars.

No point in having a ministerial code if breaking it is the routine, as it appears in recent years. Lying to parliament and not correcting the record should be treated as a criminal offence similar to that of perjury.

Braverman has a history of incongruous conduct. Tories excel at subterfuge and cover-up. Sunak even appointed a minister who had previously used a false identity.
Assuming that you're referring to serial professional con-man Grant Shapps he's been proven to have used at least THREE fake names as part of his online pyramid schemes: Michael Green, Corinne Stockheath and Sebastian Fox. He's also tried to sue people for pointing out these facts, lied in parliament about it and was continuing to do it while an MP.
Unfortunately the Speaker has no real powers to hold ministers to account. Contempt of Parliament requires a vote, which any sitting government will win. Our system is broken when ministers can lie and get away with it!

Which carries the greater punishment in parliament, knowingly lying or misleading, deliberately or unintentionally, or calling someone a liar? We all know the moment anyone calls out the lies or calling a liar, the speaker suddenly orders them to retract it or can be removed, yet when they know someone is lying, they let it pass and say it's interpretation of statistics and open for debate. Honestly, parliament needs dismantling and a new system replacing it. That will only happen if we force it to, we basically need an army of Guy Fawkes.

The most important thing we can do is make sure they get absolutely obliterated at the general election. Send a clear message that this type of gutter politics and behaviour should be wiped away and confined to the history books, never to be repeated.

If I understand correctly.. MP's are allowed to present anything as fact in the chamber, and nothing exists to force them to publicly correct the record, because facts are open to interoperation??? where's Guy Fawkes when you need him?
If I repeatedly broke rules and there were zero consequence, then I'd constantly break the rules if it benefitted me or my friends. Solution = Consequences. The harsher the consequences, the more effective the solution.

The speaker's office are rather 'toothless' are they not? A requirement that the minister in question is not able to present or answer questions before rebutting such claims would seem to be in order. Deliberately lying to Parliament (as suggested) requires consequences.
