It's phot youtube, mate. Most of the commenters have an inherent bias you'll never satisfy. You have killer commentary and clearly enjoy your work. Makes your content quality stand out. Tamron for some reason has to fight harder than anyone to get respect and you can see it in the comments sections everywhere. This lens will make a lot of people very happy. Whether the haters like it or not 😂
Thanks mate. Your comment and insight is an encouraging breath of fresh air. I read some of them and think what am I missing. These lenses are great and cheap. I often get people saying ‘be more critical’ my response is that there is enough criticism in the world and there’s not much to criticise. My experience with lens quality is that it’s usually knit picking pixel peeping where the criticism comes in, which is a dead issue if you learn to shoot well 🤷🏼♂️ maybe it’s just the two of us tho lol. Thanks heaps mate.
I do like mine Tamron 18-400 with FTZ on Z50, even when many people dislikes those ultrazoom lenses 😊 with its quality I can imagine this one could be good too.
Thanks for this video. The lens looks like something I might be really interested in, depending on price of course. Enjoy all your videos, keep up the good work.
Great video and really interesting lens. May I make a suggestion though. When shooting prop-driven aircraft you really should try using much slower shutter speeds. I know it is much harder and you will get far fewer sharp shots but, when done well, the results are much more pleasing. I used to shoot at high shutter speed and got plenty of sharp shots BUT the props were always frozen and I well remember a photo-competition judge saying it was a "model-kit shot" as it looked like it could have been a model hung up!!! After that I spoke to a photopgrapher I knew who specialises in aviation photography and he told me the same thing - shoot prop-driven aircraft at around 1/60secs if you can, or at least 1/120secs or something like that. Yes, you will bin a high percentage of shots but with practice you will get much, much better and more interesting shots of prop-driven aircraft with prop-blur that looks really effective. Give it a go but be prepared to bin plenty. I always shoot at 20fps on my Nikon Z9 & Z8 with shutter speed at around 1/100 for prop aircraft. I may only get one or two good shots from a 2 sec burst but they do really well in competitions..
@@RalphMayhewPhotography A few - our camera club holds 9 competitions per year and we get involved with inter-club competitions. I have put a few aircraft images in from time to time but we also have an aviation specialist in the Club who always does very well and he taught me his techniques a few seasons back.
Love your videos! Especially the one on the Tamron macro 90mm. I have the Tamron 18-300 (which I love!) Sometimes I wish I could go a little further than 300, but not sure if going to 400 is worth the upgrade. Either way, still cool to see what this lens can do!
Great review of this lens. The photos at the end during the airshow were impressive. I've got the Z mount 150-500 from Tamron. How's the mount on your test lens? About the only complaint I have with the 150-500, the mount allows about a degree of rotation after it's locked onto the body.
I was looking to this the NIKKOR Z 180-600mm for shooting my son's soccer games. My biggest complaint about the Nikkor is that I feel I may not have enough flexibility to go wide since most of of my shots are from the sidelines. After seeing your video, I might consider the Tamron instead.
I think this lens would be good for street photography or to take when hiking. I didn’t have much luck with their 70-300….images were often soft but this one is looking pretty good. May have to give tamron another go.
Hi there, when shooting Helicopters or Planes with props, you should be using a shutter speed of 1/500 sec or less. They will look less like they are stationary in the sky. Cheers
Sounds good so far , I am very interested, but one thing that I am disappointed about is it looks like it does not come with a tripod collar foot mount and this lens is big enough that it should have one , there is one available from Tamron but it is expensive for what it is.
Yes I sympathise. I also found however after using it constantly for a 5 hour air show and a 3 hour whale watch, I was never left with the impression that I felt it necessary. 🤷🏼♂️
I have the Nikon Z 24-200 F/4-6.3 which I use on my Z8. I really like the lens… but I’m always looking for a bit more reach. Considering the TAMRON 50-400 and yes I know I will lose some wide angle capability. Quality-wise, do you have an opinion on which lens is better? I’d have to trade or sell the 24-200 to get the 50-400. Oh yeah, for wide angle shots I have my Bikon Z 20mm f/1.8 S.
My vote actually goes to the 50-300. That’s insanely sharp. The 50-400 is super impressive though. With the z8 you can crop too given the high megapixels so the 50-300 gets even better. They’re all Great offerings though.
The 50-300 was consistently sharper, but the 50-400 was also sharp you just had to work for it a bit harder. I think the answer to that question lies in if you need the extra 100mm, which would be about wildlife or sports photography. I own and use all the time the Tamron 150-600 because of the 600 reach. It’s not as sharp but if I shoot fast on f/10-12 then it can be. These new lenses are sharper throughout a wider f stop range and the 50-300 is the best of it. I hope that helps.
Thanks for the fair review - this could be a replacement for my 80-400, 50-400 - lose one stop down to F6.3 at tele end but saves me £/$1200 from buying the Nikon Z 100-400 (although can use TC's with that lens) and can always buy Nikon 'S' glass equiv further down the road
It’s a full frame lens so you’d need to check if it will work on an APSC sensor. If it would you’d then times the focal length by 1.5. It’d be an epic Tele.
The Smart Money is on the Premise that for reliable Image Quality no Zoom should be more than 4x . ie a 70-200 is 3x , a 180-600 is 3x >> yet this 50-400 is 8x ..doesnt apeal to me for that reason .. but the Z mount sorts out lots of previous problems
Thought the same thing, but the results we’re seeing in this Z mount 50-400 (and even in the E mount) say otherwise. It should not be this sharp with its range, but somehow, Tamron nailed it. This is the first non-native lens I’m seriously considering (in decades).
Different lenses. One is a specialized lens and it's heavy and HUGE, Tamron is a portable walk-around lens with the telephoto option. Nikkor 24-400, a natural competitor, is even worse with f8 kicking in quickly. Personally I am getting this lens. I shoot wildlife occasionally and when I do I need a wider perspective as well for landscape so for me it's a perfect walk-around lens. There's no way I will be getting 180-600 for walks. Also, these new Tamron lenses are amazing optically, like 28-75mm f2.8 Gen 2. I am sure this one will be good as well.
Why did you click on a video about a 50-400 lens with an aperture of 6.3, clearly not watch it and then make a comment that’s laughable at best? Had you attended the event, no doubt you would have taken 3 bodies, all Z9. A 400 f2.8. 105 macro. 85 f1.2 and a Plena. Post it up on your channel when you do, look forward to it.
What would you use this lens for?

Ralph, cheers mate, great vid! - Some really interesting thoughts in here, glad you enjoyed the lens.
Thanks heaps guys. It’s a cracker of a lens!!

It proves a huge range to work with and I think it also helps you work for focus and sharpness with technique and settings.
Wow, I also have Z50.
Thanks for this video. The lens looks like something I might be really interested in, depending on price of course. Enjoy all your videos, keep up the good work.
Ahh thanks so much. Yes I’m intrigued about the price point too.

Thanks heaps. Yeah it’s always dilemma that 100mm gap.
So if i use this on my Z50 II it's a 75-600mm.😊
If it works on a crop sensor, then yes 👍
Great video. I'll have to think about getting this one day
Thanks mate 👍

Thanks mate. I use the 150-600 Tamron through a FTZ and it’s really firm. Will keep an eye out on that weakness in future lens reviews tho.

I recently shot a footy tournament and thought constantly that this lens would be perfect for it. I had to use two cameras to accomodate for it.
I think this lens would be good for street photography or to take when hiking. I didn’t have much luck with their 70-300….images were often soft but this one is looking pretty good. May have to give tamron another go.
Yep I think you’re on to something there.
C'est mon objectif préféré pour le mix paysages et animaliers 😊
Yeah good call 👍

Great call. Thanks for sharing the tip 👍
Always good to have lens options!! Well done Tamron, How about some long primes at lower prices?
I’d love a super wide at f/1.8 👌🙌🙏
I wonder what a 500mm prime from Tamron would come in at 🤔

@@RalphMayhewPhotographyI don’t think the 50-300 Tamron lens is available in Z mount.
1. How does it perform compared with Tamron’s 50-300 that you reviewed?
2. Is this worth the extra $ and weight over the 50-300?

How would this be on a Z50. I just started photography
It’s a full frame lens so you’d need to check if it will work on an APSC sensor. If it would you’d then times the focal length by 1.5. It’d be an epic Tele.
Can this lens be adapted to Nikon Z 1.4X and 2.0X Teleconverter on my Z9?
I don’t know but my 150-600 from Tamron couldn’t so I’d be doubtful.
I doubt it. My 150-600 couldn’t so I wouldn’t be super confident this lens could.
TC’s will not work with this 50-400
Yes, it is a perfect travel lens but due to f value, you may need a portrait-oriented lens, too...
Yep true that.
Oooo does this mean I can sell my F mount Tamron 100-400? Wondering how this compares to Nikon’s 28-400..
Potentially. Not sure the price point it’ll come out to but it’s a fantastic lens.
I there anyone out there that has used both this Tamron Z 50-400 & the Nikon Z 100-400 f4.5-5.6 that can compare them?
I don't care I want the corner sharpness tests !! :-)
Hahaha I respect that 👊

f6.3 at 180mm .. Midnight down a coalmine >> no thanks now pass me my 180-600
