Hey I’m recently diagnosed so pretty new to the online autism community. For any takers I have a question pertaining to terminology: So I’m seeing a lot of discourse about autism labels, as in high functioning/ low functioning. Which I get because even though I am “high functioning/mild” I do have intense executive function issues and just in general a hard time getting anything that requires effort done consistently. Guess I’m asking if there’s a correct way to refer to those on the spectrum who’re currently dubbed “severe,” as in cognitively impaired with little to no verbal communication abilities who have a much more difficult time than myself maintaining independence. I get it’s not a binary of minimal autism or maximum autism, so someone can be non-verbal and still intelligent, so I understand if this question has no simple answer, I’m just curious.
Happy to help you out, then! So from what I have learned, most people on the spectrum prefer to now use the terms "verbal" and 'non-verbal". This has less of the stigma associated with the high/low-functioning labels. I hope this helps you out, and I hope that you have a nice day! ^3^
Doing my best to repeat what I've heard from autistic creators: "high/low suppot needs" is a better frame of reference than "mild/severe" or "functioning". I thought it imprinted in my mind that anger = cool, and I got really mad at myself whenever I got mad. Turns out I just get sensory overload.
So... there's a high probability that I have ADHD and a small percent chance I may be autistic (my brother has it and I'm getting a therapist soon so I'll find out eventually). But whether I do or do not have these things... I feel heard.

My family and I are aware that Autism is a spectrum disorder, but we have always described my older brother as "severely autistic", since he has the mental and emotional capacity of a 2-3 yr old, and he is handicapped. I was recently told that I have "high functioning" autism. I learned that the spectrum is more like a color wheel than a scale, but should I stop describing my brother's autism as severe?
I've heard that using support needs as a reference point is more relevant and less mean. So your brother could be described as having high support needs, and the specific area(s) where that support is needed can be listed as well. This helps to reaffirm that all ppl are different; they might need help with some things, but are completely independent with other things. It's a great perspective when considering any type of person as well, not just autistic people! Hopefully this helps!
You either are autistic or not. The effects of it can affect your quality of life in a variety of ways. A more effective term would be one that addresses his ability to function as an autistic person not the autism itself.
I can remember turning autistic age 3 Its objectively the most traumatic experience possible, that's why you cant remember it, your thalamus is not letting you see the event My Thalamus allowed me to see the memory at age 53 , 3 stages (bad luck always comes in threes) All other theories have no evidence The Truth is self evident all you have to do is relax and I mean do nothing at all except calm down physically, practice practice practice , breathing always through your nose is a big indicator of how relaxed you are and learn to self remember to watch your memories like a movie , its all there, you switched on record mode the moment you turned Autistic don't worry, you , your Thalamus will not let you see anything if your not calm enough
0:47 I think it depends on where the person is like do a ‘and scoop!’ If their laying down if standing depends of your strength and back piggie back rides but if it was an emergency I highly suggest not picking them up unless your a professional and you might do more harm then good
Guy is sensory overload the thing where everything is too loud and bright and you start mentally shutting down or start having basically a mostly internal panic/anxiety attack bc those have started happening to me and i am starting to think im on the spectrum because i related to all of these that I understood

I find it interesting that it’s sort of a stereotype that autistic people like dinosaurs and that’s not entirely inaccurate. Obviously not everyone with autism has a wide knowledge of dinosaurs, but I am curious as to why so many people do. It’s like the meme about guys obsessing over the Roman Empire. Like, WHY are people so obsessed with certain things? And why are so many people obsessed with the same thing? What makes a topic more likely to be obsessed over? Does it have to be something in history that we don’t have full knowledge of and likely won’t be expanded too much as time passes? Or is it some other factor? And I don’t understand having a favorite dinosaur. Like, I sorta get having favorites, but I also kinda don’t understand
I’m not autistic but I relate with a lot of these- Like I can talk about the lore of cuphead for like 1 hour but nobody I know likes literally any of my interest so they usually tell me to shut up or they don’t listen and just leave the room or smt 🙁 Should I do something about that or nah-
I'm suffering due to the fallout of a 5-month shutdown that left my life in a precarious state. Does that count as suffering due to autism? Eh, there are trade-offs, and I learned an important lesson about my own limitations.

Yeah functioning labels are kinda useless.
Am I the only person with autism that hopes they find a cure?
I’ve seen other people on the internet who do. What do you think or imagine a cure would be like?
no I feel the same. I don’t care about ‘having a super power’ or ‘being how I am’. I want to be normal.
No. I have Asperger's and feel the same way as you.
I know for a fact have autism and ADHD and I actually love this video and it is so true!
Happy autism awareness month upcoming to all my fellow autism!!!!
I relate to these routines and life memes on a personal level and Im not autistic lmao
“Nah man, I just got symptoms disorder.”
When I was younger I got really mad and upset when there was a lot of noise in the classroom, and I thought that I was like that because when I was younger I really liked Angry Birds.
0:38 - me with waffles
As someone who is autistic, I can confirm all of that.
The guy in the middle at 0:46 looks like Greg Heffley lol
I was informed I had AuDHD as a kid, so on one hand I’m completely aware that all the “weird” stuff in doing
On the other hand my parents thought I would use it as a crutch and never believed me when I wasn’t in my masked state
This video was a gift from the heavens
Thank you for the video!
Nice video and cool memes
0:25 we autistic peoples can see who is good peoples, who cannot see dangers, and who is danger.
You aren’t in danger, you’re a chihuahua. It displays you as a bird that looks big and scary. But all you are is a crow that almost got hit by cars everyday.
0:55 when you think autism is a disease. My respect goes down. It can go far to disliking and avoiding you. To calling your @$$ a d!sgrace to humanity
2:42 this meme must be one of the most inaccurate things my autistic brain has ever seen. I can differentiate both. Severely autistic peoples has so much less chance of being sane and safe to be around to the point even mildly autistic peoples won’t want to get close to them neither. It gone to the point that one followed me to my PE history class.
2:47 gotta say it here, this is ADHD more than autism. Many peoples, even autistic peoples, aren’t able to distinguish these two due to having pretty similar symptoms. But i think its more of an ADHD thing rather than a Autism thing.
Not me getting obsessed over North Korea now. Common, I just watched a damn documentation, why so many afterwards! And why especially NORTH KOREA? I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER HOW THIS HAPPENED
Why are these so accurate
oh no its to much relatablity!
I had two teachers (one knew I was autistic) and they'd both ask me to take my earphones out then I would just imagine beating them up cause it helped distract me from sensory overload
I do that a lot, minus the earphones and professional diagnosis. I’m just undiagnosed and violent lol.
As someone with autism I relate to most of these (especially the last one)
I funnily enough don't really get 0:12, I wouldn't say i'm monosyllabic at all, and there's a very very noticeabke difference between excited me and regular me
I want to know how jigsaw puzzles colored helps with autism issues
@@gavin9278 thanks dude 😎
Use "high support needs"
I can remember turning autistic age 3
Its objectively the most traumatic experience possible, that's why you cant remember it, your thalamus is not letting you see the event
My Thalamus allowed me to see the memory at age 53 , 3 stages (bad luck always comes in threes)
All other theories have no evidence
The Truth is self evident
all you have to do is relax and I mean do nothing at all except calm down physically, practice practice practice , breathing always through your nose is a big indicator of how relaxed you are
and learn to self remember to watch your memories like a movie , its all there,
you switched on record mode the moment you turned Autistic
don't worry, you , your Thalamus will not let you see anything if your not calm enough
The second one is so true
this is v relatable since I have combined ADHD
I said HDHD first time I wrote this- :’)
0:47 I think it depends on where the person is like do a ‘and scoop!’ If their laying down if standing depends of your strength and back piggie back rides but if it was an emergency I highly suggest not picking them up unless your a professional and you might do more harm then good
All true af
~Coleslaw despise gang~ ~it literally makes me gag~
Guy is sensory overload the thing where everything is too loud and bright and you start mentally shutting down or start having basically a mostly internal panic/anxiety attack bc those have started happening to me and i am starting to think im on the spectrum because i related to all of these that I understood
my class: *is loud and won't shut up about cringe things from gen alpha*
me: *is trying not to hit and yell at them*
I'm not autistic and yet I still relate
I have autism. There’s nothing wrong with us! Autism is not something to fix! There’s no such thing as mild or severe; just the level of support the individual needs!
“Autism is caused by vaccines?” Who falls for that tall tale!?
Took the RAADS-R by myself and passed with flying colors (I believe it was the 160s), and I’m already diagnosed ADD and OCD, so I’m fairly certain I’m just undiagnosed. I do not appreciate being attacked out here with that last one!!! /j
They're called hyperfixations /special interests
i would like to see more about OCD and Anxiety please
I have Aspergers and I have never met a person who talks negatively or makes some ludicrous claim about Autism. Just people who never heard of it.
I was bullied for it all my life😔 Glad that you got lucky tho
Had to click bc I, too, am a theatre kid named Lily 😂
I’m not autistic but I relate with a lot of these-
Like I can talk about the lore of cuphead for like 1 hour but nobody I know likes literally any of my interest so they usually tell me to shut up or they don’t listen and just leave the room or smt 🙁
Should I do something about that or nah-
I commonly have sensory overload
I- I relate to alot of these
Welp-
Using autism as a joke or insult is OUR job, as well as calling each other queerphobic slurs because we are ✨ the bestest of friends 😊
I'm not autistic but the first one Is how I feel
Wow... I didn't know Autism Speaks was hated THAT much.
the last part is relatable.
lmao I thought you were someone named lily from stage crew that I used to do
Just because I have autism doesn't mean I'm suffering well I am suffering but not because I'm autistic
I'm suffering due to the fallout of a 5-month shutdown that left my life in a precarious state. Does that count as suffering due to autism? Eh, there are trade-offs, and I learned an important lesson about my own limitations.
