I walked up to the sitting figure and sat beside him. The sand was glowing in the setting sun. While everyone went inside the tents which were set up as soon as the caravan stopped for the day, the mysterious loner was just staring at the setting sun. Maybe I wanted to watch the desert more or just intrigued by the stranger, I sat on the hot sand. Nobody spoke. Maybe we both were worshippers of silence. For long I was content like this but the moment to talk to someone on whom I had my eye on since the start of the journey couldn't just be passed like this
'Thinking about someone?' I asked
The man formed a small smile. Without breaking his gaze with the sun he replied 'Yes'
'Want to tell me about this person?' I asked trying not to assume genders or relations
'No, it will hurt too much'
'Well, you can spare the details. Tell me what they felt like..'
'well, they felt like a blanket on cold mornings, breeze in scorching sun' he said closing his eyes as if he could still feel them.
'too cliched'
He chuckled 'yeah.. Everywhere love feels the same...isn't it?'
'I wouldn't know' I replied in a fading tone. At this, the man turned his head to me. Stared at me with an unreadable gaze. I just had an honest smile. Again I spoke
'So, what are you doing here in the scorching sun without your breeze?'
He looked up at the sky and said in a bittersweet voice
'They were home. Home is a prison and I am a bird'
