One of my all-time favorite games. I, too, have had many replays. I love it for all of the reasons you mention. Also, the game has an excellent balance between maintenance and play. What I call "maintenance" in an ARPG is any time you have to pause the game and manually manage the members of the party. And that includes combat moves. I love that you choose an attack for each party member, and they are on auto-attack from that point on. I wish Microsoft would do a remaster of this game.

Microsoft could remake or make a new one game with 8 caracters playable, this would be the best game ever! with a little ajustments like speed travel and some class improvements like a skills tree something like that, less history and more action like the first DS!

Same. Bought a magazine that had demos of age of wonders 2 and dungeon siege. Meanwhile, I lost it, and realized that i had forgotten the name of the game. I bought age of wonder 2 and became a fan of the franchise. But I never forgot about the forgotten game (the irony). Bought them all as bundle on a steam sale this month... Didn't regret it.

This was the exact same way I got to experience the game as a kid. Played the demo at least a dozen times and loved it, then I saw it on a supermarket shelf for cheap and asked my parents to buy it for me. After many playthroughs as a kid, I got the game and its expansion on Steam later on and replayed it a couple more times.
Unfortunately, my attempted playthroughs of Dungeon Siege 2 never lasted more than a couple hours. I disliked the fact that you can "ruin" your character/build by putting points in the wrong/weak skills. That ruined the fluidity I've gotten used to in the first game.

I loved playing this with my cousins many years ago, and despite the fact that I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like it NOW, I had a blast with it back in the day. Mostly for how we would play through the various campaigns, trying new builds, attempting to beat each other's kill scores, and endlessly quoting "That still only counts as one!" any time one of us got the final hit on a boss.

  • @usererrer7493

Still my favorite all these years later. Probably the ONLY computer game I ever played that I loved as much by the end as I did at the start. (Usually I wind up love/hating or just hating a game partway through.) As a gamer I guess you could say I’m an “explorer.” I don’t really care about challenge or plot or role-play, I just want to immerse myself in rich environments and discover the cool things hidden in the world, and DS was fantastic for that. I played through DS and its expansions and all the mods I could find, of which there were dozens back in the day. (Mostly hard to find now.) Cool thing was, you could use a developer tool called DSmod (released to the public) to transfer your characters from one game to another, so you could play your favorite toons in world after world.
After playing the game many times, and exhausting all the mods out there, I eventually got so homesick for DS that I started a DS-themed Dungeons and Dragons game on Roll20, which I’ve been running for years. Still getting my fix.

I actually liked having to walk manually all the way back somewhere if I wanted to go back to another town or something. Very handy is the dropped item near-permanence so you can leave your piles of gold somewhere, especially at the end of the game when you have loads of it. Many times when backtracking I found little potions and odd and ends that I had missed during the action of the first pass.

These are some fixes that took about three people all over the internet for like 2 years to find lol! (Most of this is for steam idk if it would work for the disk version)
#1 You need to go to the games files and enter the configure menu and turn party shadows off and do the same in the launched game. #2 You may need to turn gamma all the way down to prevent the world from dancing (you'll know what I mean if it happens). #3 Go to your steam menu and right click on DS1 go to property's and click "set game launch options" and type in "zonematch=true" this will enable multiplayer.
Do play it it's worth it.

The PVP also left a lasting impression. Editing save files, getting creative with the spellbook and the prefix & suffix buffs, even adding buffs to health potions. I know it wasn't intentional, but it made it unique as well.

As a fan of the game and someone who likes to get technical, I would like to point out that melee being overwhelmingly powerful and better than the other classes is both true and false. There are many reasons for this, I'll name a few major ones.
If you are comparing same level characters, melee is the most tanky of them all, and it does do more damage than range type apart from a power spike range gets when unlocking crossbows. However, if you are playing with a friend, the amount of kiting, chasing, and healing that melee classes have to do over the other classes makes up for this difference. It is much easier for the other classes to do damage (thus getting exp) without dying in mobs.
I would argue that mages are overwhelmingly powerful. If you use spells like nature magic's dancing zap or combat magic's explosive powder, you can bring a group of melee units close and decimate the entire group with just a couple spell casts. This is very micro-managing heavy though, and in a single player campaign game if you bring along a big group of 8 characters (which you've shown is what makes DS unique among its peers) you will find that it is probably too difficult to pull off to be worth it. So mages truly shine above and beyond when you play a solo or with your buddies, while melee is powerful with larger groups.
This all changes once high levels come into play. Dancing zap caps at around level 25-30, and ice blast is the next best thing. You are absolutely right when saying that melee and magic hybrids are very strong. Death blast and haste for melee buffs combined with the right items are an extremely strong combination.
And to follow up the brief mention of PvP, I haven't really done it much myself so I may be wrong, but I would think melee would be kited more easily in a 1v1. "Real" DS PvP is done by doing some easy edits on the character file to make the ring slots have shields equipped, giving all player characters a 100% chance to block melee and range attacks. That's just a sad truth for the non mage classes.
Then again, that's just my take on it, and I realize the video wasn't aiming to be a technical discussion. I enjoyed watching.

    • @ProtoxxGaming
      @ProtoxxGaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good point about magic! You are correct there, there are those AOE spells that can decimate groups of enemies (even at the high levels with storm spells, cyclone of fire etc)
About PvP, yeah you can kite meleee and I didn't actually think about that but when I did it vs my siblings (who like to use either ranged and magic) I always seemed to get them down super quickly with melee (and the haste/regen spells) I have never used a non buffed melee character in PvP though :P

Yesterday I actually came back to this game, for completion sake and man is the gameplay slow, around 6 hours in and I finally got to the first large settlement and imho the game feels like a game a streamer would play while debating someone, no offence 😅.
I'll still try to complete it for completion sake but I struggle mechanics are a bit confusing like the fact I want to make one of my companions lead the party and be the tank by when I try using formations it's always my main character taking the lead even though I build him as a dps 😅

This is my all time favorite childhood game and it will always be. there is just nothing like it. And as you mentioned, it is indeed very linear and no fast traveling.
BUT that is what i love about it, since no other game captures that pure feeling of immersive adventure. there is no game'y loading screens, fast travel nonsense. you just literally walk the entire way. and it also makes inventory managment actually interesting since you know that you can't just teleport back to town and sell everything. so you actually have to think about what you pick up and leave behind. and if you'll bring a pack mule to carry more gear that takes a spot on your team or not.
I am right now school for video game programming so that I one day can recreate the magic that dungeon siege had for me and many others for the next generations and bring it into the moderns age.

I remember meeting Chris Taylor at the Dungeon Siege promotion event (Metrotown Mall in Burnaby where he grew up). Still have the t-shirt, cloth map of Ehb, and box copy signed by Chris (in sparkly gold marker because his other marker ran out of ink). Such a friendly guy, and even his family was all there striking up conversations with all the fans. I'm glad they really pushed for no loading screens, as it made the whole world that much more immersive. Having no fast travel added to the immersion because it really felt like you were going on these long exciting journeys, and it meant that much more when you all of a sudden came across a small village after fighting your way through the wilderness seeing nobody friendly (except your party) for hours. Ok damn, time to go install the game again.

This game is a prime example of how doing things by the book isn't always a bad thing. It feels like every game now tries to be "Subversive" at the expense of actually being fun. Dungeon siege on the other hand is just a typical diablo style RPG with nothing weird or crazy in it, and it's a great experience to this day. It didn't need to follow any weird trends or include gimmicks, it just did what worked, and did it well.

Back in the day I really enjoyed playing through DS1 and DS2. DS3 wasn't as original but it was still fun. If we are talking about ARPG, since then I have only played Diablo 3 and am still looking for something fresh that can excite me. Not sure if Diablo 4 will be that game. I recommend you all to try out the "Legendary Mod" for Dungeon Siege II. It contains a full recreation of the first Dungeon Siege Campaign, LoA and some other maps. Talking about the linear part of the first game, in the mod you have portals if you like it that way and monsters will respawn too. It contains the original music and voice lines too. Recruiting is a bit harder now because you have to pay 10.000 to unlock a slot for the fifth character in Stonebridge.

    • @GoofsGuides

Does the XP scale well for the difficulty of the game? And are the drops/shops well balanced? If so I'll definitely check it out. I love both games.

    • @CultOfSol777
      @CultOfSol777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@GoofsGuides I think it's good but a bit harder because some monsters do a lot of damage at first. But you can level as much as you need because they respawn all the time. The shops are pretty balanced, just some parts I miss from the first game but I saw some spells being there from the first too. The Armor is also not as same as in the first but I am ok with that.

and yes, controlling 8 Characters was I guess the main reason, I started over so many many times, I wanted to check so many things
like 2 melee, 4 ranged and 2 mages
then like 1 melee, 4 ranged and 3 mages, or 3 melee 2 ranged 2 mages and so on.. :D
or the intense battle as 1 and only melee fighter, so one man army..without companions ( which was a sad, awesome, lonely but great expierence as well)
Guess I'll soon start over another Dungeon Siege 1 Run :D just pure nostalgia for this game

    Exactly my words.
Dungeon Siege 1 was also so mystic, because you start the first 30 min all alone, on your farm, and you hack and slay through the forest, through a dungeon, until you meet ulora. I played this Game like 20 times through. the music was so on point and perfect. and I just loved checking every 2 min, how my stats slowly began to increase of my party members *-*
Dungeon Siege 2 was nice as well, though not as mystical as dungeon siege 1 but it was also a lot of fun to play and I liked the Talent tree very very much.
and nope, I'm not talking about the third game, that wants to be called dungeon siege 3, since they r*ped it and spit it out.
So if there is somewhen in the future a Dungeon siege 4, I do hope, that they will bring the mystical beginning of a single Character starting this Game somewhere far away from a village back, and it would be all right if the Talent Tree from Dungeon Siege 2 is included but with the fighting style of auto attacking of dungeon siege 1 if you don't click on the enemies but standing close to them together with many many Companions.

it's me again :D lol that's truee, melee is the best choice kind of overall. Especially when you make a solo run. I tried once as an only ranged Char without companions...I had to stop that project somewhen after I killed the Goblins, since the bows dealt just like 40 dmg per shot and I was kind off sadly to weak to tank the dmg and it took soo long to kill the monsters after the goblins. the problem is in DS 1 your dexterty sadly is not counted to the damage, like they changed in dungeon siege 2 there the dexterty increases your ranged dmg as well. now, think about it, if they would have done it in dungeon siege 1 as well. a high DEX Character, that deals shit tons of damage because high DEX would have actually increased your damage like Strength did.
