    I've owned my 701 enduro for around five months now and I'm about to leave for a big trip with it. I have to say it's just a phenomenal bike. Thanks a lot for making me pull the trigger on one David.
    No it's not as comfy as a twin, a dual sport never will be, but it's 50 kg less and that makes it ten times as good offroad and much more fun on twisty backroads. The LC4 engine is a gem!

    Fantastic review Dave, you covered so many of the relevant areas for adventure riding - I have been oggling the 701 in my local Husqvarna shop in Brisbane and lo and behold, you have just answered so many questions I had about this bike, particularly as the Husky has not received the media attention the Yamaha Tenere has. Can I compliment you on one particular aspect of your review which is so unbelievably helpful to viewer's ?
    The SOUND VOLUME ! Everything you say on your review can be easily heard and understood BECAUSE THE VOLUME LEVELS ARE COTRECT !
    So many TH-cam videos have interesting content and great footage but are let down because we cannot hear what the rider is saying
    Your voice volume is perfect, well done
    Loved the backing music, twangy guitar and harmonica, what's not to love !
    What beautiful adventure riding country ! I grew up in Sydney and had no idea these riding trails existed
    Excellent technical coverage of features of the 701 I was unaware of, very clearly explained so non mechanical riders like me can understand
    10/10 Dave, well done

    I've learned a huge amount about ADV riding and motorcycles in general through your channel, in fact you are the reason why I went out and bought a DR 650 last year (my first bike at the age of 57) If this keeps up I could very well own a 701LR before I'm 60. Thanks for the great videos.

  • @MrEtnorb

    Another excellent bike review. You lead the pack in terms of useful information and relevance to real world riding conditions. This is an interesting proposition, mid way between the T700 and the 790 in price. Makes the Yamaha hard to justify when you have spent upwards of $1000 on it’s inferior suspension, have 9 litres less fuel and weigh 35 kg more than the Husky. This bike still proves that a good single will always be the way to go.

      You're thinking of the bike the wrong way. The T700 and 701 are 100lbs apart, and feel completely differently. The 701 also needs $1000+ worth of equipment to make it ADV comfortable.

    • @MrEtnorb
      @MrEtnorb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Brian Meyer To make the 701 comfortable you need a small add on screen, which costs less than $200. According to Dave, the seat was Ok for him although I would modify it myself. I would add Oxford grips to every adv bike if it didn’t have them. That’s it.

    • @gxm164
      @gxm164 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@MrEtnorb A small screen will still not get the 701 as smooth and comfortable as the big T7 on extended highway miles. The two bikes are still in different categories. I would prefer the T7 for a cross continent tour with mostly paved miles, but the 701 is my bike of choice for dirt focused adventures. BTW I own a 701 and love it

      Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV have ridden both the 701 and the PR7
      Not sure what it is but the PR7 is so much more dirt focussed and I felt comfortable attacking the trail on it almost immediately.

    • @Dowent
      @Dowent 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV AJP is old tech refined. For example, my 2018 PR4 has an engine from CRF 230, we have both in the family, but you can clearly feel the 10+ years of development, it has better low rev torque, smoother power distribution across the rev range and much better response. CRF 230 was already great, PR4 is amazing.
      PR7 doesn't hide that it's the bleeding edge of the tech, but it works its internals quite well. The engine certainly has that direct mechanical feel to it that I know so well from my KLR and other older bikes, but while it might be slightly harder to get used to, it really gives you the confidence that the bike will do what you want it to.

  • @Duken4evr29
    @Duken4evr29 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I own a regular 701 and am considering the Rade Garage auxiliary tank that replaces the stock airbox. Love the bike - I also own a 300 XC and while the 701 is not a lightweight dirt bike, it does enough dirt bike stuff to be highly entertaining while off road thanks to it's excellent suspension and, with the right front tire, surprisingly accurate steering. The engine is a gem with power for days for the "wrapper" it is in, and with a proper can on it the sound is pure big thumper bliss also.

  • @cgmtv

    You are, by far, the best story teller in the motorcycle adventure world. Australia fits you well, too. Another great video!
    I have the twin sister, 2019 KTM 690 and I have exactly the mods you suggested, real hand-guards, larger foot-pegs, a engine protection a luggage rack and touring windshield (still waiting for it, since they didn't come out last year).
    Being 172cm, the seat height is a bit of a problem in very specific situations. I'm thinking of a lowering kit, but I'm not sure yet.
    I love my ktm, I can go shopping with it, cruise around the city, and get really dirty in the same day. Cheers!

For long term adventuring with gear (I don’t pack too much, and I weigh about 90 kilos) would you recommend a heavier springing, or it should be good the way it is? Excellent bike review. Australia looks like an adventure bikers paradise. Here in central europe (Germany), we have almost no legal gravel roads. So I am riding motocross once a week on my YZ250F, but it's too short fun because of my physics (I'm 56yo). Well, sometimes I'm riding a TT600R in the woods. I shorten the ratio by 4 teeth, so I don't need the clutch that much and it works perfect even for technical riding. It should help on a 701 too. So ride on and have a great time.

    I share your conclusions. Coming from my Africa Twin crf1000dct which I rode on dirt tracks in the Alps and Pyrénées, I got my 701 early 2021, and was really pleased to use it as an adventure bike, and easy to pass more technical parts encountered. No need for Long Range version in western Europe. Easy for 2 weeks trip with Enduristan saddles ( no side rack). Comfort seat added for boring highway, lower larger pegs , no bar riser for my 1,78m tall as better control of front when bent over hzndle bar, RadeGarage rally tower to fit GPS and have some wind protection. And yes it handles like the 450excf I used to ride. Thanks for extensive review 👍

  • @toltod
    @toltod 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Also with ride by wire, the addition of a cruise control would probably entice riders away from other adventure bikes. I really think it be a big plus over bikes like the yamaha T7 or more expensive tiger 900.

    Thank you very much for this awesome review ! I really enjoy your videos and I hardly can´t wait to be back in Australia, because I spent 1,5 year there and made so many new friends there. very nice and helpful people, especially in the Outback. i.e. during my trip around your beautiful country by pushbike, I got a severe health issue on the way to Caiguna Roadhouse, had to go back to Norseman to the hospital, had a small surgery and was hosted by the local postman and his wife until my recovery . after cycling for four years and 28.000km, last year I bought a BMW R1250 GS Adventure, World Travel Edition from Touratech/Germany. I love this bike and it so great for long distance travelling, but too heavy for the real difficult tracks, despite the fact, that I already had four trainings at the BMW Enduropark in Hechlingen /Germany, which I highly recommend. But for having more fun in the deep dirt and difficult tracks, especially when I am on my own , on Saturday I will pick up a quite new Husky 701 (no LR) with Rade Garage Tower and tank extension.... wish you a great time, stay safe and healthy! keep in touch, mates !

    got the 2020 701 one tank. same bike ( ie emectronic corner abs/tc and quick shifter) . you recognise it as the frame is blue and not white.
    you can buy the LR option for around 1500 - 2000euros ( switch, the front reservoir, framing , pipes and seat) and install it on 701.
    you can buy an husqvarna switch to put under the seat which remove ABS on rear wheel on mode 2.
    I saw you change the ugly mirror...good. the engine plate is to change also for an aluminium one.
    LED bulb exist to change this old one.
    the protection for the lever are just jock ...husky got some sturdy one in option.
    last when you have bags you don’t have access to the rear tank...so LR is a good option...even more because husky fuel pump has a tendency to fail!
    701 is a very enjoyable bike ( I got a GS 750 also), very nimble and this mono cylinder is the best ever on the planet...they improve the KTM 690. If I have to keep only one bike it will be this one for the pleasure.
    but remember, it is a mono cylinder so it will never be as confortable as a twin cylinder. more fun, more light, more powerfull, better noise...but less confort.
    Was hesitating with the 350-450...which are dream bike...but I you commute, you need ABS, quick shifter to go to track. and the 10 000 km maintenance interval make the deal

    Thanks Dave for yet another fabulous review. I have just ordered one and plan to use it for adventure touring with as much off-road/backroad travel thrown in as possible. I actually like the look of the front tanks. But one concern I have about these tanks is do they take a beating on every crash or tipper ?. I note at 41:20 approx in the video the bike has picked up a few marks on the left front of the tanks...I assume from that minor crash you had. Since there does not appear to be any way to protect the LR tanks with bars, I plan to to put a bit of impact absorbing overlay rubber on the leading edges/corners.

    Great Review, Great attitude, So enjoyable to watch...it was a great break in my day! I've been dreaming of a 690/701 based adventure bike for a while and this would be a perfect starting point. I like and agree on all the adds you talk about and would additionally add a couple more things: friction lock cruise control, lowering pegs for my taller frame, the Power Commander for a little low end boost which may make up for a the tall first gear (since neither manufacturer is willing to address that due to (my guess) sharing the motor with a street bike). And another silly mod I think I would like is a gear indicator. Thanks again. I'll be checking back often! Cheers

    I agree with 1st gear being too tall (I have a 690 Enduro R) I miss the ability to putt through those areas that require it. My old XL600 really shone in that area. I've stalled the 690 numerous times on a slow hill and buried it on sandy hills after stalling. The easy shifter, now that is something I will never ever do without again. I was scared to use it at first, but the first time you open the throttle wide and slam up through the gears, you will surely agree.

    The only thing that makes me second guess this bike is #1-you should be able to turn on/off modes and abs without stopping. I know you don't want an easily accidentally hit switch, but there are solutions. #2- I would want to be sure that if the traction control computer fails, the bike will still run. I have been stranded by technology more than once, and it makes me leary. And I guess theres a #3-can a standard sized Campbell's spaghetti can be used to couple the exhaust together if it breaks? Thats the no.1 requirement for a bike in my eyes. lol

    Can you run down the rear tank first, then the front tank? The one “problem” with the 690r under seat tank is that it ruins the traditional weight balance of a dirt bike. When you get on the throttle in a turn the back end really wants to become the front end. Power sliding on a KTM 500, 990, or 1290 is a joy. On a 690...not so much.

    deux other info:
    one positive and one seriously negative: the long range seat is more confortable than the normal 701 ( wich is not confortable) because he got more cushion due to the shape on the front reservoir.
    It is neqrly impossible to the airfilter on the long range without not removing the front tank wich will take you a lot of time and trouble ! the 701 air filter is on the front of the bike and on the non normal one it tzke 5 minutes...few hours one the LR.

    Me again Dave, would you of preferred the long range rather than your standard 701. Is the bigger tank and carrying the load initially okay. Or off loading the fuel bladder and having the smaller tank better. Looks like the tank could offer leg protecting if you get t-boned by a tree. Why did they stop the long range thought it could of been popular. Ya don't see any on bikesales. Also you would think this traction control on the move should be worked out with husky by now. Especially as bikes like the Desert-X has good rider assist options. 10,000kms service is almost as good as the CRF 300. Do you ever think of trailering out to dirt. I've seen bikini fairings that has slide up and down tracks on the front head light fairing with a locking function. Do you have envious 701 LR with Nugget. Been watching a few MAD films/clips lately. Cheers.

    I do not miss fairings/windshields, even in winter. I ride naked bikes and adventure bikes. Everyone complains about wind, why? I find that windshields have an undesired secondary effect of buffeting, which is worse than the original wind and takes a bit of money to fix, so why bother.

    What a great review. This and the PR7 clearly make my KLR outdated. How does it deal with heavy topcase? I ride with a 60L topcase that has about 30kg when loaded, would this bike be OK with that?

    • @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV
      @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a bit perplexed as to why you would put 30 kg up high and to the rear of the bike such as this. It would significantly affect handling and cancel out all the reasons why you would buy a brilliant handling bike like this. Stick with the KLR :)

    • @Dowent
      @Dowent 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Well, I also have 40L of soft luggage, but I dislike it any time I'm not riding. In here, there is a town every 5km. You can't just leave a bike with soft luggage parked just anywhere, you always run the risk of someone stealing your things.
      Another big advantage of such a big topcase is when you don't get your own room, you can use it as a big secure trunk nobody will run off with. You just take it off the bike, carry to the room and put it back on the bike in a morning.
      It does certainly affect handling at speed, but so it's made me slow down both on and off road, but in the end, it doesn't change my ability to get somewhere or to pick up a bike, since I can always just take it off.
      Since I like to ride through cities, which are once again everywhere in Europe, side-cases are more of a limitation than one topcase. So all in all, I've traded speed for peace of mind and simplicity, which I think is a good trade. Ofc, it would make no sense for riding in the wilderness, but in here, I've got thousands of kilometers of densely populated area in every direction.

    Great review on a bike that I’m interested in. Bit late in the day but could you please confirm your fuel consumption? If you’re getting 3.39 litres per 100km your range would be over 700km. I achieved 75 mpg (UK) on a 690 last week over 550 miles in the US. That equates to 3.76 litres per 100km itself outstanding given the riding, some fast highway and trails. Truly incredible for a bike like this and numbers you might associate with much smaller machines. I’m even more keen!

      that is too difficult to answer there are so many variables. You need to go to a suspension specialist and, or start at the standard setting of compression and rebound ride around the terrain you normally do, at the speed you normally do then slowly change clickers. That is of course dependant on your weight. Nope.....go to someone who knows what they are talking about or leave it standard.
