So after a bit of a shipping delay, I finally got the Phoibos Proteus in to review. It's definitely one of Phoibos's most interesting designs. In some ways, a bit of a greatest hits compilation of different inspiration. All powered by a Seiko NH35A.

I was lucky enough to pick up one of the frost variants before they sold out - and I am glad I did! This is by far my favorite Phoibos so far. Its a very handsome watch - even better in person, and I agree - is very comfortable. I think it looks awesome on my wrist, and has become my new favorite daily wearer. Great review!
Thanks! I was surprised at how fast they sold out. Supposedly a new Proteus is coming next month. Only 3 colorways, but in a "aged steel" case. Saw some pictures, but I think this white still looks better.

I got the same colorway you reviewed. I am very pleased with it. I bought a PX002 quartz a couple years ago(since passed on to my son). This is what I have been hoping for from Phoibos. I am a bit disappointed with the “shell”of the clasp, very thin. Not anything you notice once it’s on but every time you take it off or put it on you are reminded. Overall I am very pleased.

It eventually did, but then it sat in Dallas for a few days before they even attempted to delivery it. No idea whats going on with shipping these days. But eventually it got here.
spot on shane. never really considered the chapter ring as i got the blue version where the off yellow sits more comfortably than the white for sure
This is one beautiful watch! I love the textured face, and all the other design features, but I agree that the yellow ring looks out of place. It looks like some kid stood in the middle of the watch and took a whiz while turning in a circle! One thing I wish you would include in your reviews is the length of the watch band. That is to nice a watch band to have to replace due to it being to short to fit our man-sized wrists! My wrist is 8 1/2” and I have to replace to many bands due to them being to short to fit! Extra links cost way to much to make sense. If you add up the cost per link, the watch itself is free! Great review as always!!! I love those soft dulcet tones. They are so smooth and reassuring!
This is a great watch in a great original design :) I just saw that most of the models are out of stuck ..... Luckily i bought the black dial , Cant wait to have it :)

Beautiful Watch but i am biased i love Phoibos and have five of them , i do like their Octopus logo as it make them stand out from other watches.

I almost see Tudor North Flag in the case. The bezel lume pip maybe Tudor Pelagos. Bezel grip slots kind of IWC aquatimerish. Totally right about the amalgamation. I still like the watch though but I do like the Great Wall better. I just picked up my first Phoibos, the Voyager brown dial thanks to your fantastic review. I'm a stainless steel sports watch guy and like polishing so it caught my eye. It is a solid piece that i'm amazed can be had for the price. I guess I shouldn't be surprised anymore. There are tons of watches now that pack so much punch for under 400.00. You have to love advances in machining tech. and an industry of contract watch case manufacture maturing. Your reviews are some of my favorites and I just subbed. Love the strap changes, wrist shots and especially the narrative. You offer a lot of great insights and keep an objective pros vs cons with final subjective leanings view. Great content and keep it up.

I’ve owned the black dial version for a couple of weeks now and overall it’s a winner. A bit quirky but that’s Phoibos. The chapter ring lume color works well against the black dial. Due to the choice of font and color the text above the six almost disappears to my eyes. I see this as a plus because it lets you focus on the hands and actually makes it easier to tell the time at a glance. I can live with the porthole date window but I think a no date version would have really worked well with this design even though I prefer to have a date complication. Your white dial version looks great on that Rios1931 cognac strap. Although the bracelet is pretty good I’m currently running my black version on a black elastic paratrooper style band which looks and feels great on wrist. It also brings the weight down quite a bit. Zero issues with build quality. All in all thumbs up for the money. Great review Shane. You always do comprehensive and knowledgeable reviews.

Relative Time I like them a lot. They are soft and flexible yet thick. They should stand the test of time. This Proteus is a bit of a chameleon when you put it on a leather strap. I was happy to see the Rios1931 show up in one of your videos.
Great review! Overall I like the looks of the watch but I don’t like the second hand and how angular the case is. Great looking lume as well.
That chapter ring reminded me of the internal bezel of the Vostok Reef you reviewed. You didn't seem to care for the way that was executed either. Extra points for critical consistency.
I didn't even think of that, but you are right. It's is similar. Funny thing is that Vostok might even be in the video. When I'm not wearing it, it lives in that leather watch box I sometimes use for shots when doing a review.
I bought the blue dial version even though the white was available. Personal choice & no regrets. Just received it over a week ago & am now wearing it! The lume is good too. I love the quirks🤪🤣👍🏼😎

Nice review as usual Shane. You've seen my comment on Facebook already as I own this specific model and also the white version. Heck, I even did an unboxing video when I got mine because no one had a white one on TH-cam yet, which is strange because that one is sold out. I actually love the mashup of styles. It sure isn't perfect. Oddly enough it's like your macro shots enhance the flaws in the watch. The color difference between the white dial the outer ring doesn't seem so pronounced as it looks in your video for instance. The lume is oddly enough better in my eyes than your video seems to show. In fact this is my only watch where the lumed bezel actually is as bright at 6am in the morning as the hands on the dial. That's quite cool I think. Anyway: as usual your mileage may vary 👍😆
Thanks. Yah, macro tends to bring out and almost exaggerate the flaws. It's useful for showing what I'm talking about in more detail, but it never looks quite that bad to the naked eye.
Overall it's pretty cool watch. It's got a few quirks, but I think most people would be quite happy with it.
@@RelativeTimeI have to correct myself: wore my Helm Vanuatu and noticed the bezel is also still visible in in the morning. Not sure why I didn't notice before...
I received the blue dial version today and I can tell you that the yellow inner chapter ring meshes very well with the blue dial. I enjoy this watch so much that I just ordered the white dial version.
After a year, how do you like the white dial?
Hey Shane, great review as always. I've had the Proteus for about a week. I unboxed it, removed the plastic, set the date and time, and put it back in the box. I'm just not sure how I feel about this one. I love the dial layout and color (I have the white/silver dial) as well as the case shape, but that date window is a negative.The lume, however, is a positive. Right now I'm just unsure about this one. Sometimes it takes a while for a watch to grow on me once I have it in hand. Keep up the great work. Cheers!
Sometimes that's how it is. If you don't like it you shouldn't have a problem selling it. A lot of people looking.
I like the overall design, and general color scheme of the piece. I just don't know that I like it enough, to pay the price tag for it. Not that I feel the asking price is unfair for the quality offered. I just feel that at that price point, it has some stiff competition that I personally would prefer over the model in question. As usual, I really enjoyed the review. I value your honest opinion. Thanks a lot for sharing it
Overall pretty cool looking watch. I think the second hand and the crown, while cool, don't quite mesh with the rest of the design.
I'm hoping they use that crown again on something else, just something a bit more curvy.

Those friction clasps are a nightmare!!. If you don't mind chipped nails and butchered cuticles, they're fine, but ..... 😱

Exactly. Every other Phoibos I've looked at has had a push button. No idea why they changed it on this one.
Hm, I was about to wait for a Helm to get back in stock but pulled the trigger on one fo these in black! Can not wait! Has to get here sometime in the next week!
Helm makes a great watch. They are really built like a tank. Although between this and the Komodo, Id say this one is more comfortable to wear on a daily basis.
@@RelativeTime That is nice! I hope it will be fine on my wrist although it is just 6.75 inches... still I have a Seiko SRPA87 - and that is 44 by 48 (Seiko Helmet Reissue) and I find it acceptable on my wrist... so the Phoibos should be fine!
Nice piece although I'm not disappointed for not getting one . Saw the shipping comments & can only imagine the upcoming horrors with East \ West Ports closing . Nice review 👌🥂
I think some of the shipping issues result from them using a 3rd party to get it to the USA, then hand it off to the USPS. With the outbreak I think USPS is limiting what they take external per day. Just so they can prioritize on their direct customers.
The chapter ring is probably yellow because of the C3 application. They should have made the hands and markers C3, and the chapter ring bgw9. That would have looked better.

Despite it having many quirks, but it all mashed up well as a whole.
i have the forged carbon dial and i love it. All the quirks of this watch give it personality. Its fun. If I wanted a stuffy dive watch Id get a kamasu or clomage
Not sure I'd say kamasu is stuffy... But then again I got the red one way before anyone else did. I think I had the 2nd or 3rd video ever out on it. Now everyone has one.
@@RelativeTime Kamasu is a nice watch and can be dressed up or down, but my affordable collection is large and it wouldnt really fit in. The red one is my favorite as well.

The new Phoibos seems to me like a Submariner homage with a stainless steel gmt bezel and jubilee, and different dial and hands. It reminds me of the Aquacy Hei Matau.
I totally agree with you about the date window. It could look good, just not on this watch. I also actually like the Phoibos logo.
Looks like the only common design language with the date window is the bezel pip? I also think the logo looks good... on this particular watch.
Looks like a watch designed with the leftovers from the parts bin. Worst look - #1 the date port hole... It should be square with a silver polished frame to match the indices and would look better at the 6 o'clock position #2 the yellow tint to the chapter ring...It should have a very light blue tint to compliment the silver frost dial. I am torn on the look of the crown, but I am OK with the Lightning second hand. Now that you pointed out the end link edge mismatch with the case I can't un-see it and it is an annoyance.
The dial and bezel on the future releases are from Phoibos Sea Nymph
Now that you mention it, yah. Just looked at my wife's sea nymph and there are a few differences, but pretty close.

The watch isn't bad, although there are so many others out there (some better, some worse) that don't get the exposure that brands like Phoibos and Zelos do (free watches). As you say before you got this there were 5 or 6 reviews out there. However thanks for a pretty balanced review 👍

Was doing a little catching up on some videos; and, as always, I really enjoy your presentation very much.
I also tend to agree with you about some of the design elements; the date window and the inner chapter ring.
I find the date window simply unbalanced where it is. Maybe if it was at the six I would like it more. The chapter ring isn't bad, but maybe the white dial could have used one with a different color.
I like the contrast it creates on the darker dials, but it's just not enough on the silver-white. Maybe a gunmetal color or a dash of contrasting blue (orange?, maybe even red to match the seconds hand that doesn't overlap it).

@@RelativeTime Yeah, that's true. Red seconds hand, orange text, silver-white dial, greenish-offwhite chapter, black bezel insert... Looking through your macro shots, another thing that sort of bothered me, was how the chapter ring looks like it's a cheap cutout. The inside isn't colored.
I still like that watch though.. for some reason, there is something really soft about it. The overall look is pleasing to the eye and I like it anyways.
Got one with blue dial. Would like much more if they use simple second hand. Millgaus hand is such a cliche. Data window should be square indeed. Wears very nice and bracelet is excellent (no problems noticed with screws during seizing). At least not a copy of Sub or SKX.
The blue looks really good. Most of the screws were fine, just had 2 that were a bit more stubborn. I'm betting that was just my bad luck.

I really like the watch and seen a few more reviews on it play with getting one but I'm going to hold off for now. My collection I'm getting ready to take in another Direction I think I have enough divers unless something earth shattering comes across my path. I'm not sure how I feel about the second hand and the crown they just don't work on this watch and then again it kind of makes a watch something different because they don't seem to fit. It's almost like they fell in love with that second hand and Crown and wanted to incorporate them into a watch but didn't quite know how to do it
Even though these are selling out, it's always best to wait if you are unsure. I'm guessing that's what happened with the crown. It's pretty cool looking, but I think it would work better on another watch.
@@RelativeTime agreed I have a sentinel love it well made they do great work the next one may be the deal. I always check your channel for watches you can describe them very well I have as much information as if I handled it myself and c as n make an educated guess. Enjoy your channel.

I basically came to the same conclusion. I really like the case, but not a fan of many of there design choices. Don’t like the crown, the date window, the second hand, and especially the Suicide Squad font they used for the text. Kind of disappointing.
C3 never looks completely white. Usually I like the off-white/cream color, but here it contrasts with the dial. Probably would look fine with the dark dial versions.
Phobos actually released another diver shortly after this was released. They released the 4th version of the Eagle Ray. The Eagle Ray has a very classic design, almost opposite of their Proteus, the new version got a Seamaster-styled bracelet, and a movement downgrade to the NH35. It $300 same price, same movement, same WR. Stainless almost like they know the Proteus would have mixed reviews and wanted an alternative quickly to follow.
Thanks. It could be. I knew the Eagle Ray was coming for a while, but I thought the watch I showed at the end was going to come out first. So could be they decided to follow it up with something more "safe".
Everyone loved the original Eagle Ray, so the new one should be a good seller. Even with the downgraded movement, and thicker case size.
Thanks for the review. I always enjoy the strap pairings and Macro shots. I think they selected the chapter ring color because of the lume strength of C3. They have to make a decision when using two different colors of lume on the dial. They could have used C1, which appears white during the day. The C1 has a drastic strength drop compared to the C3.

Great Review! Trank you very much. But the watch Itself isn‘t my cup of tea. The case looks kind of unfinished (Can’t describe it better) and the secondhand in combination with the writing on the dial do not speak the same language concerning design.
Proteus looks unique, but it's a bit too big, a bit rough around the edges design-wise, overall this eclectic style is not my cup of tea. The prototype looks interesting though.
Not sure when that one is coming out, hopefully soon. Although they just released a new Eagle Ray, so they might push it back a month.
