  • American adventurer Harry Steele (Charlton Heston) earns a living as a tourist guide in Cusco, Peru but plans to make his fortune by finding the Sunburst, an Inca treasure. His dubious associate Ed Morgan (Thomas Mitchell) wants the treasure for himself and tries to have Harry killed. When Romanian defector Elena Antonescu (Nicole Maurey) arrives, Harry apparently agrees to help her and steals a plane used by a Romanian official who is attempting to get Elena to return and uses it to fly to Machu Picchu. There he discovers an archaeological expedition headed by Dr Stanley Moorehead Robert Young), who is preparing to enter the tomb where the Sunburst is said to be located.
Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chávarri del Castillo, better known as Yma Sumac - from the Quechua "Ima Sumaj" (how pretty!) - was a Peruvian soprano of great international success, especially known for her unusual vocal range that covered five octaves. Yma Sumac's voice was a force of nature that was inspired by the songs of the birds of the Peruvian jungles, the wind that slides through the Andes and the lament of the indigenous race, to which she claimed to belong. In this film she sings three songs rescued from native Andean folklore by the composer, guitarist and director of the Peruvian Art Company, Moisés Vivanco, also responsible for the film's soundtrack and for many years husband and mentor of the exceptional singer. Among them, the song Pachamama (Mother Earth) stands out.
