Troubling proposals to develop mega warehouses on Winston Churchill in east Oakville, Ontario

  • Learn about these inappropriate mega warehouse development proposals, directly adjoining residential neighborhoods. The nature and scale of these developments would be suited to a heavy industrial area and are completely out of place in an Oakville community of homes and families. It seems certain that the impact of such 24/7 mega-scale operations would forever alter the character of the surrounding neighborhood and significantly impede the quiet enjoyment of homes and public spaces.

    Brian, I just heard about this! I’m furious and how ignorant of our Mayor to allow this seeing he lives a hop and skip from this proposed mega-warehouse! This would be a disaster for SE Oakville residents! The impact on traffic, the noise and pollution in the surrounding area! The exodus would be great and the only thing I see is Oakville becoming less desirable to live in! We must do all we can to STOP this horrendous proposal! Let’s do this!

    Here is the shell of a letter you could copy and paste to send to our representatives. I encourage you to personalize it a little.
    Dear (Mayor, Councilor) _____________
    *YES to LIVABLE OAKVILLE*
    *NO to WINSTON CHURCHILL WAREHOUSES*
    _>_
    I wish to express deep concern about warehousing developments being proposed on Winston Churchill Boulevard that are entirely inappropriate to this area, given the gigantic scale of the proposed operations and the residential neighborhoods directly adjoining. The nature and scale of these developments would be suited to a heavy industrial area and are completely out of place in an Oakville community of homes and families. It seems certain that the impact of such 24/7 mega-scale operations would forever alter the character of our neighborhood and significantly impede the quiet enjoyment of our homes and public spaces.
    We acknowledge the importance of regional economic development but it needs to be done responsibly, balanced with the interests of homeowners and taxpayers. There are many permitted uses for these WCB properties which would generate economic growth and also be "good neighbors". Please remain true to your dream and vision for Oakville and put a stop to these unwelcome and ill-considered warehousing proposals.
    Thank you for considering my concerns. I am counting on you to support the residents on this very important issue.

    Create a petition and share, check because even if the city rejects the developer can go to the Ontario land tribunal to force the city to accept the proposal

    Good luck on your fight... I expect you will get some Nimby labels. Question, was the area rezoned for this complex?

    NIMBY-ism is alive and well, I see. Shame.

      If a development contravenes a zoning regulation, petitioning for it to be stopped or modified so that it is compliant is not Nimby-ism. It’s the right thing to do. Standing by and just letting it happen is the shame as is your over simplification.

    Thanks for making this informative video (love the reference of seniors tik tok). Any chance you can get schools to help you circulate the message …. Lots of parents of young kids that could easily miss what’s going on in their our own neighbourhood 😉 … not sure if you have a TikTok or Instagram version but it would help spread the msg fast (you can still highlight all 6 points… maybe find a teen to help)

    I just did a quick check... properties values on Clairmount Cresent have been doing pretty well since you have moved there... in the $700,000's in 2012 and some recently have sold for $1,700,000. Also, there seems to be a park between you and the proposed site. I grew up in Hamilton and know what heavy industrial is.... this is not anything like that. I won't be signing the petition.

    • @TheCollinsTV
      @TheCollinsTV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      People make decisions on where to live based on many factors. Zoning is one of them and should be counted on to prevent developments that are out of step with that zoning definition. Calling it Nimbyism is a convenient way to dismiss the complaint as is telling someone that the price of their house has appreciated beyond what you seem reasonable so be happy. Ironically house prices in Hamilton have risen 32% in the last year vs 21% in Oakville. Fact but as irrelevant to the issue at hand as your comment.

    • @larrymacdonald5911
      @larrymacdonald5911 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheCollinsTV I suspect that any comment made detracting from your position will be deemed irrelevant. Also, I do not begrudge, as you suggest, any capital gains that residents in the area are lucky enough to reap. But I do defend what seems to be completely reasonable decisions made by the Town of Oakville. I still, will not be signing the petition.

    • @TheCollinsTV
      @TheCollinsTV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@larrymacdonald5911 the petition in my mind should be signed by those that support the position and with a stake in the debate as it gives it much more credibility. If you are neither than it makes sense that you would abstain. No issue with that.
      I am not against contrarian opinions but to dismiss this one as mere NIMBYism is simplistic. You suggest that the town is correct in their position. happy to understand why you think that is the case. Surely 200+ loading doors in a 24 hr operation on a property less than 100 M from two residential streets has to challenge the intent of Livable Oakville and a Zoning that is required to ensure Minimal Impact (defined term). The definition of which is provided by the Province of Ontario as that is where the Zoning categories are established. Municipalities can’t just redefine them as they suit as it appears Oakville is doing by their admission.

      @@larrymacdonald5911 I think the central issue here is that this zoning was changed or perhaps "loosely interpreted" to accommodate this potential development. Whatever you deem heavy or light if it was there prior to the housing then those that move there have chosen to live with the drawbacks of such industries due to any number of factors. To place this beside homes that have been in place since the late 70's early 80's seem to be something much different. I guess the true test would be how you would react to this in your backyard? I suspect the result would be much different than a search through property values and growth (Hamilton is doing pretty well I think?) which seems to be more envy than an actual analysis. Don't sign the petition but be real about your motives when reviewing

      Larry, You are clueless of what a Mega-warehouse would do in your neighbourhood so don’t be pooping your opinions and obvious arrogance to the real issues here regardless of where you live! Raising a family in a good area matters as does clean air and safe streets! I would argue you don’t care either way since it’s not in your backyard! Enough said!
