After 5 hours today of doing it the "old way" I found this video and I am kicking myself at what a game changer this was! New subscriber and very grateful for this video!!
I love comments like this. Glad we were able to help. Even more glad that you took time out of your day to leave a message. Thanks for the sub too, all is much appreciated.
Adam, how lucky I have been to discover your tutorials. So easy to understand. I do mainly wildlife , have you got some images of animals in the bush, that need tweaking, you could show the how to’s Jenny. We’ve lots of time now we have an extended “Lockdown’ till end April her in South Africa
I cannot find the Soften Face preset in my Lightroom . Where do i find this as I do have the most current version. Other than that this tutorial was helpful. Is this a paid preset?
This is a super awesome tip for portraits, and I've already been using your auto mask technique a bunch of times since you first showed us how. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
+ChaChaChávez thank you for accepting the wisdom and I'm happy to hear you've been enjoying the Auto Mask tip. This is yet another way to use it and considering many folk love editing people pics this should come in handy. I just wanted to show people there was a cooler way to do it. Thank you for watching. It's much appreciated!
Excellent tip, Adam. I remember the first time I saw you use this tip. You used it to select some birch trees in order to make them stand out in the photo. I never thought to use this technique to soften skin. Really, this tip can be used to "grab" any particular color in a photo. Once a color is grabbed, you can then selectively work on that color. I'm so glad to be reminded of this technique and learn to use it in a different way. Very useful.
+Ira Bruce Levine the fact that you remember that tells me 2 things. 1: you are a great listener and 2: your support of me and this channel is on another level. Thank you Mr. BRUCE. I appreciate you too. As mentioned, there are so many uses for this tool if you open your mind to the possibilities. I'm not trying to be a one trick pony but rather show the different ways to do something because really I think that's were a lot of people struggle. Imagination. So if I can open the thought process for people then I've done my job. Glad you enjoyed the tip! You da man...
Another great video Adam. On a previous video you said you would explain the difference between density and flow, I'm still unsure of the differences. Many thanks for the POTW, I'm honoured you thought it worthy!
Charles Budd thank you for not only watching but taking the time to comment as well. I do appreciate it. Happy you learned something new. Keep in touch.
The red overlay is actually what you wanna have it is the same as the green one you can just change the overlay's color by pressing shift+O and you'll have a green, black or white overlay
This Technique isn't working for me. I used all of the same settings, but when I click the face, it highlights the entire circle of the brush rather than just the skin tones. What am i doing wrong?
They should be in there, however, if for some reason you do not see it, try this. Open a new adjustment brush, reset all the setting to zero and apply clarity to -100 and sharpness to +25. Then follow the video. That should do the trick. You can also save this as a preset so you have it in the future.
Im having the same issue. However, in my adobe profile on their webstie, it gives me Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic. The CC doesnt have really any of the modules you are showing. Could you help out here?
What am I doing wrong? I am in my brushes, with skin softening selected and my other settings are set as stated. I took my brush size to encompass my subjects whole face and clicked. I see my pin I created on her nose and my auto mask IS checked/selected and my overlay mask is turned on because her whole face is showing the red mask. Here's my problem; when I attempt to hover over the nose pin, I get the Left and Right Horizontal arrows and I can't seem to be able to change it to the "hand" to move it, as in the video. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Y'all.....
Hello Tami, that is pretty strange. Typically if that happens (the Left and Right Horizontal arrows) it is because you have the Alt (PC) or Option (MAC) key down. If you are not touching that key then you should be able to move the pin. Here are a couple of trouble shooting things to try. 1. Hold down the shift key and see if that will let you move the pin. 2. Hold down the space bar and see if that will let you move the pin (this will usually bring up the hand but may only let you move the entire picture, it's worth a shot) 3. Restart Lightroom and see if that doesn't debug the problem. If none of these options work, let me know. Also, which version of Lightroom are you using? I really hope you can get that working because it's a beautiful thing when it works correctly. I appreciate you leaving the message too. Thank you! Let's get this figured out.
Hello Tami, you answered one of my questions. I just opened my Lightroom 5 Catalog to play with it a little and it looks like you can not move the pin after it's been placed which is unfortunate. It does look like you can do everything else. So you will have to place a pin, undo, place, undo, place..........until you get what you are looking for. Once the pin is covering everything you want you can finish. I know that is a little bit of extra work but it is the only work around I could find. The good news is that you can still do the trick, it's just the selection portion will be a little more time-consuming. Another example of how the older versions have their limitations. Hope this helped and thank you for clarifying your version.
Hello. It is something strange for me: With all the same settings I don’t get this “green selection”, just everything under brush gets redish. Anyone can tell me why?
Kristina Vosyliene try hitting shift O repeatedly until you see green. Your overlay setting may just be set at the default color of red when activated. Lots of people don’t know that the overlay function has several colors to help people with color blindness or to make it easier to see when working on photos that have a lot of one particular color( like this image where a red overlay on skin is difficult to see so changing the color to green helps you see it better).
I tried doing it but it didn’t work exactly the way it did for you. Instead of the green color appearing when I selected the skin, the skin was red. Does anyone know why? And it the red color covered the whole face and some hair
the red color is just the overlay color which has 3 modes, white, red or green. If you hold down the shift key while also hitting the letter O the color of the overlay should change
So great. I am following everything precisely but I am totally stumped at 4:10 Making the selection. I have auto mask on but can NOT figure out how to actually select the area. Help me brotha.... :-((
@@Jimmy_Cavallo As long as the brush is big enough to cover the entire area you wish to select, all you have to do is 'click' anywhere on the area and you should see your selection. Just make sure that you have the overlay button turned on (you can do that by hitting the letter 'O' on your keyboard). This will show you what was selected. You can also change the color of the overlay too if the overlay is hidden or hard to see (do this by hitting 'shift-O' on your keyboard). If you do everything correctly, this should help. Let me know if not.
It sounds like you might have forgotten to turn on the 'Auto Mask' button before making the selection. Turn that feature on and then you should see a better selection, not just a round circle. As for the fact that your color is red and mine is green, that is only because I changed the default overlay color to green to help me see it a little better. I believe you can do that by hitting the letter 'O'
I have be using lightroom for long time, this is total game changer . new subscriber and very grateful for this video.. Thank so much ..

Jenny Reid great idea as I do have lots of wildlife images from various places I can do some work on
Did this feature go away with the new LR? I just started out and I don't have any of those options under the settings drop down menu.
I cannot find the Soften Face preset in my Lightroom . Where do i find this as I do have the most current version. Other than that this tutorial was helpful. Is this a paid preset?

Seriously, legend.

I'm guessing Lightroom Classic doesn't have AutoMast, well it does but doesn't work the same it selects everything the brush covers...
Thanks!
Such a simple and useful tip, and you explained it very clearly. Thanks! :-)

Nice tutorial man. Thank you!
I don't know what I am doing wrong. I got a red overlay instead of green. But is does not "apply" anything. Am I doing it wrong.

why there is no effect on my brush? lightroom 5.7.1
Great tutorial. Could you please do a tutorial on how to add tan?

Thank you this is new!

Thanks alot, I knew how to do this in darktable but not LR

How todo this in cc?
when I take the control point it moves the whole overlay instead of adding selection, does anybody know what I have to do
