    The timing of this is a testimony. I sent in our DNA yesterday and worked on my family history for the first time in years. Sounds like Someone wants me back at Church.

    Heh. For me, temple attendance is not difficult. Working on my short family history, ripe for the digging, is what gets me. Granted, some parents' information got lost in fires and has made it very difficult for me to track down. And in other cases verifying accurate information frustrates me.
    Attending the temple is easy. "Digging" for relatives is hard.

    You may experience a lack of interest for learning your fam. History but we can start with basic things we care about. For example: what do you like to eat, and who else loved to eat that in your fam..etc Connect your interests with learning if they felt same way as you. You might be surprised how much you can learn about yourself as you find out about them :)

    The hardest part for me and my husband as being the only members in both of our families, is that we have to wait the 110 yrs from the persons birth date to do the work of relatives that we knew and to have to get permission from living relatives who don’t have the same beliefs. Getting permission is the hardest part and I have parts of families done and not allowed to do the rest of those people in the same family. Would be nice to seal them all together. And when we are gone, who is going to carry on the work?

      Sophia Neilsson Some people turn in names that they can't do themselves, and youth can do these. They are called temple names, while the names you find yourself are family names. I love doing family names because it gives me a more personal connection to the people I'm doing the ordinances for.

    What if you don't feel a desire to research your family history and connect with them? I struggle with this. My husband is the opposite, Chris loves geneology and finds all the information for me, but it holds no interest in my own life. I'm still an investigator within the LDS church and I kind of feel out of place for this lack of desire to connect with my past.

    • @quincykunz3481
      @quincykunz3481 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You are not alone ;). I'm a lifelong member and I struggle a lot to feel motivated to do family history. I can say though, that by reading the bible and the book of mormon daily I've come closer to my family, living and past. It's helped me see how much those in the past are still supporting us and giving us wisdom from their stories. Most good things, like sunrises, take time. Keep reading and praying, and see how you feel.
      If nothing else, You can always keep a journal to pass to your own descendants and relatives.

    • @desaden
      @desaden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's a wonderful question! I've felt that same way for a long time. Most of my Mormon friends as a young convert in the Church seemed to have that great love and a profound connection with stories about their ancestors, they had wonderful pioneer stories, and they pushed them forward to be strong and faithful. But my parents weren't members. I felt disconnected from my ancestry, and being in the Church made me seem to pull farther away from my roots than to connect me to them. And I can't really explain what exactly changed for me, but it came by means of studying the doctrine and scripture associated with family history work and vicarious ordinances in the temple.
      I love quotes, so if you're interested, here are a couple I know and love that deal with the topic:
      President Uchtdorf said, "Families are not just meant to make things run more smoothly here on earth and to be cast off when we get to heaven. Rather, they are the order of heaven. They are an echo of a celestial pattern and an emulation of God’s eternal family."
      And one of my favorite scriptures is in D&C 52:14 "I will give unto you a pattern in all things, that ye may not be deceived"
      We learn that families aren't a coincidental, convenient part of God's plan, rather they're a symbol of an infinitely large and wonderful eternal structure that has always been and will always be in place. We believe that in some future day all children of God will belong to one unified family, sealed and promised together by temple ordinances. And only inside of that one united glorious family of God can we receive all of the blessings He hopes to give us. God loves families and He needs them to work in their boring and imperfect way to bring about his glorious and perfect purposes. God asks us to call Him "Father" and I think there's a reason for that.
      Personally, as I slowly came to understand what family means to the Father (it means everything to Him) I came to understand what my family means to me. And that might take you a good long while to figure out like it did for me, and that's okay. But if you keep working at it and studying the doctrine you'll get there.
      One last thought on uncertainty to end: D&C 78:17-19
      17 Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye are little children, and ye have not as yet understood how great blessings the Father hath in his own hands and prepared for you;
      18 And ye cannot bear all things now; nevertheless, be of good cheer, for I will lead you along. The kingdom is yours and the blessings thereof are yours, and the riches of eternity are yours.
      19 And he who receiveth all things with thankfulness shall be made glorious; and the things of this earth shall be added unto him, even an hundred fold, yea, more.
      You'll get there my friend! Be faithful to the light and testimony that God has already given you, and the rest will fall into place exactly how it should.

      I’m a convert as well and there are times that doing genealogy is really important and other times it’s just really a struggle. I am the only member in my family and some of my family love to do research. So I think the spirit is helping me by having them get some things done, (hope that makes sense). We don’t have to do everything at once there’s a time and place for everything. Let the spirit guide you.

      @ltamha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey, first I'd like to encourage you to continue learning about our church and second, the desire will come in time to learn more about your ancestors. I didn't feel a connection at all when doing my family history in the church until I went to the temple and did my first baptism for the dead, for one of my ancestors and a friend's. I gained such a strong testimony that day of the power of baptisms for the dead and how WE can help our ancestors even though they're gone from this world. I pray that if you keep investigating and eventually join the church that you'll also have a similar experience. God bless.

    • @rosebud7105
      @rosebud7105 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you.. I loved the quotes and will pray on it to gain a stronger testimony. My husband loves genealogy and for him it's a living, breathing desire of his heart; to hear the echos of the past and connect with his relatives. I guess, for me I look to the future, and hope for our own children... those already in heaven and those to come.... :)

    What was that thing that the characters print off. Do members pay to go to the temple?

    • @churchofjesuschrist
      @churchofjesuschrist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Adam, great question. No, members don't pay to go to the temple. The characters in the video are printing off cards with ancestors' names. Latter-day Saints study family history to discover names of people who have died without being baptized. They are then baptized on behalf of those ancestors in the temple. This might sound unusual to someone hearing about it for the first time, but members of the Church do this out of love for God and their family. To learn more about temples, see the link below! www.mormon.org/site/temples

    • @holmswedeholm
      @holmswedeholm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not only that "their work" is done: as this video states, combine temple work and family history work. Family History can be a great deal more than finding a name: it is turning your heart to that ancestor by learning enough about him/her to find what is loveable about them (which may be in the records or learning about the circumstances around them that they overcame or finding a photograph or story about them)-- perhaps feeling how they might be watching and prompting you to do this, along with taking their name to the temple for their priesthood blessings there. And it is sharing what you have learned with others in your family. All that binds you closer to them and makes the temple's sealing powers have greater effect in your life--and just imagine what it does in the eternal progression of all your family!

    • @StephanieBennion
      @StephanieBennion 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, like someone else said - look for your distant cousins. If you think it's all been done on your direct lines, look at one of your great or great-great grandparents. Are are all of their siblings' work done? What about the children and children's children of those siblings? My gr-grandpa did all the work he could while he was alive, but now I am able to do his his first and second cousins' work! It's so thrilling to know I can connect with my family that way when at one time I thought it was all done too! :)

      If you are adopted and sealed to your family you would be a part of their family, ancestors and those yet to be born. If you know your birth family you could still research that family line as well and do their temple work for them. No matter what...you belong💖

      The two things combined are more powerful and useful than alone. Just like nitro-glycerin and the clay were.

      @danowen9142 what? I haven't tried dressing up to look like a baker and make masonic hand signals and watched a video where Satan breaks the 4th wall? Nooooo, obviously I have never done that nor any family history work whatsoever all those years I was a mormon.
