  • I recently bought the Sevylor Big Basin 3-person inflatable kayak (which is also known as the Hudson). All the TH-cam reviews I saw were basically robots, with the AI voice reading Sevylor's promotional materials.
    I have long used and love the Sevylor Colorado 2-person inflatable kayak, so I figure I am in a good place to judge the larger model. I unbox it. I inflate it. I test it. I paddle it. It's a good alternative to a canoe (or a raft), or a rigid kayak. With the obvious differences that come from being basically a long and narrow raft.

    Thanks for reviewing mate, definitely was wary of how good the quality was but you’ve sold this to me. :)

      Absolutely. I've had my Sevylor Colorado for a decade, the Big Basin for three years, and both have stood up amazingly well. The materials used are the essentially same in both and more than sturdy enough for most folks. In fact, the only thing to fail in the Colorado was one of the pool-toy style plugs on a seat, and they moved to better valves with the Big Basin.

    TY for reviewing this boat! Exactly what my wife and I are looking for to enjoy with our young granddaughter! I found it on sale for $199 so I thought the price was right...

      Glad you found it useful! It’s a good option for couples with a little one for the middle. It’s not huge, though. If your granddaughter is older (a tween or up) it’s going to be a snug boat.

    Thank you so much for "actual human review". I just bought this kayak, after I watch your video. How is drying process. I notice this kayak has outside fabric layer, and inside this is PVC type of actual chamber. I am just thinking a head, it might not easy to complete dry.

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best way to dry it is to leave it inflated and upside down for a few hours, if you can. Of course, sometimes it is raining outside, or you need to deflate it to pack it up and take it home. If I have to take it home folded, I unfold it later in my garage and wipe it down with a towel or rag. Sometimes I run a fan over it, too. It's the only way to make sure the water is gone. If it is not dry when you store it, it will mildew. Thanks for watching!

    Ordered one today....curious how resistant to flipping it is? Ill be taking 2 kids under 7 and hoping its steady

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is very stable. It’s quite wide, so much so I use a longer, 240 cm oar to reach over both sides easily. Two kids sitting down would have a very tough time overturning it without the aid of some particularly rough water.
      The only time I’ve ever fell out of one was when I foolishly decided to stand up while fishing. you can do that in a hard shelled kayak, but in an inflatable, the floor will bend, the boat shifts around, and things get wobbly. Even then the boat came back to upright after dumping me out.

    Great review, Can i ask what the tracking is like?

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tracking definitely is a matter of what you expect. I think it tracks pretty well - but I’m used to inflatable kayaks, which have flat bottoms and are wide. Compared to a hard-shelled, narrow kayak I’m sure it drifts quite a bit. If you forget to put on that red fin, it is almost impossible to paddle straight. But with the skeg fin, I think it does just fine.

    I took mine on the Colorado River twice and am having problems with a chamber under the floor filling with water.
    Has this happened to you? Do you have any idea why it might be happening to me?

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just for anyone following this, neither the Colorado nor the Big Basin are self-bailing. So, they will fill with water like any non-bailing raft, especially in rough water.
      But do you mean that the floor air chamber itself is filling with water? That has not happened to me. The only opening to that chamber on my Colorado is the inflation valve, located just behind the main seat. So, if you have water getting into the chamber itself, I would guess it could be something opening the valve. On my older boat, it is just a pool-toy type flexible valve, so I could see that happening. The cargo net sits on top of it, and in the right circumstances maybe it is being rubbed or pushed open slightly -- then you get enough water in the boat, and water could leak into the air chamber.
      That's a pretty complicated scenario, though. Sorry to say it could just be a puncture on the bottom of the boat, slowly letting air out and water in. One way to know is if you are also losing inflation while also taking on water.
      Hope that helps!

    Hey Adam, how is the kayak going?? I am planing to buy one and I am not sure about getting this one or the Hidroforce ventura, thanks in advance!!

      I'm glad you asked! One key thing I noticed over the last season is you must make sure the Sevylor's floor chamber is fully inflated, as well as the side walls. Because it is pretty long for an inflatable, it can start to fold or ripple lengthwise if it's not tight. That happened to us during a long trip in which we paddled to an island, hiked around for a couple hours and paddled back. Not a great time paddling back as it felt a bit like a pool noodle or something! Should have re-inflated. Lesson learned. Another point I would make is that you can' t just swap out other seats as I planned to in this video, because without the inflatable pad on the included seats, you are sitting way deep in the kayak. Just a pain, not critical. Other than that, though, it's been great, still feels brand new after its first season, and I am happy with it!

    I can’t seem to inflate mine enough… When we went to carry it to the river, it bent in the middle. Also, I did try to use the manometer (air pressure gauge), it didn’t register anything. Ideas? Am I doing something wrong? Other then that, my 2 young boys and I enjoyed it.

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My first question would be about the floor chamber. Are you fully inflating the bottom chamber, between the large tubes that make up the sides? That bottom chamber gives the boat a lot of its rigidity.
      Aside from that, don't worry about the manometer. I never use mine, anyway. You want to inflate the big chambers until they are taut, no give or slack. You can't go to much because they are not designed to really have pressure inside so much as to be full, if you get my meaning. You should be able to push on the side of the boat and get barely any give. It should not fold in around your hand or finger. One reason it may not stay there is a leak -- but that may just be your Boston values not seated properly. Be sure the bottom section of the values is properly tightened down --- not cross threaded or loose.
      Hope that helps!

    I bought 1 couple days ago and I just got it. Mine didn’t come wit the fin and I have no idea which airpump to use to inflate it. Is there a specific air pump or hose that I should get to plug in?

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the slow reply! What you need is a pump for "inflatables" or "towables." There are hand pumps, foot pumps and electric pumps for this. They all work -- but DO NOT use a car tire pump, or a bicycle pump with a lot of pressure. Car and bike tires frequently take 35-65 pounds of air pressure. An inflatable kayak, on the other hand, takes about 1 to 3 pounds of pressure. That's why you need a pump designed to deliver a huge volume of air, but at low pressure. I personally use a foot bellows, and sometimes an electric pump with a regulator valve on it to prevent over-inflation.

    It's funny, I always put my rudder on my SUP at the end.

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't own an SUP, Marie, because I would fall off! But let me tell you, once you inflate these kayaks, you are not going to have an easy time getting the rudder on.

    what about the back support? thanks.

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Back support is OK. Each seat is adjustable using the straps to either lower or raise the back. I just used this kayak on a very windy lake last weekend and back support was no issue. The issue was paddling like mad for an hour.

    What the valve under the craft?

    • @adame-hwilson150
      @adame-hwilson150  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only valve under the craft is the drain plug. You use it to empty water that has splashed in. However I find it easier just to flip the boat over.
