I don't care how many strips I use so I check it in the morning, before and one hour after each meal, and before I go to bed. So far keeping blood sugar under control without any medication by just watching what I eat.

Hello Doc. Ahmet and thanks for what you do.
My fasting blood sugar this morning was 104. Took a 30 minute walk and measured after another 30 minutes and it dropped to 100. Just before eating at noon, measured it again and it had dropped to 90. Had curry chicken with little bit of bulgur and with lemon water and waited one hour after eating. It dropped to 83. Does this sound reasonable? It seems to be opposite. I am not diabetic and I do intermittent fasting.
    Thank you

I listen to this & want to cry. I've never been told anything about this. My dietary teaching was "don't eat any sugary foods". They never said anything about testing at different times so I test every morning. When I ask about my fluctuations they just say "oh that happens at times. We just go by the average numbers." I ask for help & more info & just get drugs to take. For which most medications I get causes problems with the reactions I get. With a couple of the meds I told them several times about my reactions & they kept telling me "oh that'll go away with time." Then after a long time, sometimes years of severe reactions, they'll switch me to something else. That's happened several times now. I wish I would have discovered your videos a long long time ago. Thank you.

🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Dr. Scattered testing was VERY VALUABLE advice for me. Yes in the beginning i was testing multiple times a day. i had to to learn about how my body reacts. to test out eating spikey foods after a non spiky food lowers the spikey foods spike. it actually would be so helpful if at a beginning of a diabetes diagnosis everyone got a CGM for a month to understand their diabetes.
But i was allowed only 2 tests a day and u know how expensive those strips are. and didn’t know how to test - until ur brilliant idea of scattered tests.
i’ve had T2D long enough to get my diet, exercise, stress issues n sleep streamlined! scattering my tests will help me understand my T2D better and help me to continue lowering my A1C n my finger stick no’s. i know if my finger stick no’s go down, so will my A1C.

Dear Dr. I am 75 yrs old in sept. I take my blood sugar always before breakfast. (Fasting) it it is always around 95 to 140 depends if I eat late. My timing for dinner is between 7 to 7-30 pm. I believe that after lunch or dinner the sugar level goes a bit higher. I eat a tiny meal and I am 5.8” in height and I weigh 155 lbs. Is it ok what I am doing? I am more on veggies and fruit but don’t have much appetite. And I am on Metformin 1000 one in the afternoon and one in the night. Is it too much. And the doc had also told me to take Amaryl 2 before breakfast. But I take it after breakfast. Does the reading Upto 180 comes under the normal side. Coz my glucometer tells when it is low normal or high. I don’t go now too much to diabetic docs as they make life easier for themselves and straight away put you on insulin. I live alone and so I needed your advise. I live in India. Mumbai. Sorry for the inconvenience. I follow you religiously. Thank you. Expecting a reply from you.

If you check your blood in the morning and don't check again until late afternoon would you split the difference in the readings to tell you the average sugar levels during that period? Sometimes I do find myself feeling I over do test sometimes. My doctor has me take fast acting insulin before meals to prevent spikes as opposed to after I eat and already spike to lower. Not sure if I see any difference. I only take a 24 hr insulin once a day but use Lispro numerous times per day, but no mater how little I eat or keep carbs low, my sugars consistently go up.

I usually test my fasting glucose when i wake up in the morning My question is that how many times do i have to test in a day or is it ok just testing once a day like I’m currently doing? Thank you. We are almost on the same BG levels (100-120) as well as A1C (from 10.1 to 6.8 to 5.8). I was on insulin for 3 months but my doctor shifted to oral meds (Janumet XR 50/1000 and ertugliflozin 5mg). I usually test before breakfast and 2 hrs afterward. When I was in insulin, I normally test one in the morning and another one before bedtime. But nowadays, I only test before breakfast and do 2x per week. Once I test high (120 and up) then I revert to testing 2x daily until I normalize.

@@biyizy I think the key in managing BG is weight control and selective diet, with the help of medication. I started with insulin for 1 month and moved to orals - stagliptin/metformin and ertugliflozin. I managed to loose weight from 96kg (pandemic period) to 85 kg (target to be lowered). On diet focus, I always look into carbo load and increase fruit/vegetable combo. But, always make sure to enjoy the journey (positive outlook) and focus on the prize…

blood sugar should be tested when ever you want to test a hypothesis e.g. I feel hungry if I stay awake for over 4 hours after dinner. On a few occasions I would have another mini dinner and sometimes I would sleep even when I was hungry. When I checked the fasting sugar I found that it was lower when I had a mini dinner and higher when I slept feeling hungry. This is paradoxical but my firm belief is that sleeping hungry will result in weight loss and better management of diabetes in the long run.

@@SugarMDs Thanks for your comments and advise.
I believe that the family doctors do not understand diabetes very well. They believe that more the merrier. Hence they give excess medicine causing Insulin resistance and excessive craving for food.
Can you comment on how much medication is required? What are the symptoms of over medication?
Can you also comment on the relationship between diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol level. What are high levels for BP and cholesterol (for diabetics)? When should one take medication for BP and cholesterol?
I live in Canada and have been trying to consult an endocrinologist. However, they say that unless A1C is over 7.4, one does not qualify to see the specialist. Is this fair? Who determined this limit and how? Is it not better to take care of diabetes at an early stage?
Presently, I am treating myself (except for getting prescription). I have cut down my medications significantly and it seems to be working much better. Would you know a worthwhile family doctor or endocrinologist in Toronto whom I could consult?
      Thanks.

Good. But I monitor my diet, sugar and insulin by changes in my weight and waist. Weighing on the same scale every time every 10-15 days would indicate if carbs in the diet and insulin levels were high or low during that period. Gaining even 1/2 kg body weight indicates that the diet during that period had high carbs and hence high insulin.

I am a long-term type 2 with a serious past history of denial! Now, if I try a new food I will test before eating, then in 1/2 hour increments for 2 hours so I can see the highest number of BG I get, to determine if it's an ok food choice. I aim for no more than an 80 point rise, total. Because I batch cook my meals, that way I always have 'safe' food in the freezer. I found that I couldn't modify ADA's dietary guidelines and keep my BG down, so I've been slowly cutting down on carbs. I am working toward a keto diet, but am too cheap to throw out the older, carb heavy food in the freezer. In that case I have discovered that eating veggie soup or chia pudding before carb heavy meals help because that way I can modify the amount I eat because I won't be so hungry. The good with carbs will also digest more slowly if you eat a bunch of veggies beforehand. Because testing like crazy is heavy-strip intensive I try not to make too many dietary changes in one day or week. Modification is key.

I have been type2 for 4 years. I also check 30 minutes after I eat. I do not take meds. What I do is stairs. The stairs from top to bottom it’s 33. I walk Down and up slow for 5 times. It drops about 80 plus points. I rest and do it again in 1 hour until my glucose is below 140. As of now have not taken any meds yet. I had my hbA1c and it was 7. I am constantly adjusting my food portions. With carbs I might take two bites of a carb but I put veggies and a good fat in my mouth with the carb all at once. My meals consist of all veggies. I eat two tablespoons of 4 veggies and take a bite of a carb. I have a little meat too. Like the size of my thumb. Meats really increases my blood sugar so I eat very little piece.

ooooo 45 and pregnant. I am NOT drinking that sugar stuff.. it'll make me too sick. I wake up at 90 every morning. I am stabbing my finger every 2 hours (while listing when and what I ate) and I am just going to give that to my doc. The highest after eating has been 152 so I think I am good..but I didnt know about the under 90 thing..
