The anchorage you passed off of the town of Cape Charles has 5-15 bulk carriers riding the hook most days. Most of them are colliers (coal bulkers) which got into port a day or two before their tightly scheduled loading appointment in either Newport News or Norfolk. The coal export market isn't what it used to be but the US still exports a lot of metallurgical coal to ports around the world. For several decades, the anchorage was at Lynnhaven Roads, just south of the main east-west channel used by the Navy and all Hampton Roads ports' commercial shipping. About 6 years ago, the Navy decided to reclaim Lynnhaven Roads for training SEALs and Seabees at the combined Little Creek Amphib base and old Fort Story on Cape Henry, forcing the development of the Cape Charles anchorage. The move has been a real thorn in the sides of the Virginia Pilots and the Maryland Pilots, each of which built large stations and workshops just inside Lynnhaven Inlet.
The boat is trying to tell you that it's getting colder with snow the further north you travel. Head back to the Bahamas!!! LOL!!! Love your travels. Be safe my friends!!! Always look forward to the new adventures.
Hi guys, travelling along on your journey with you, just never gets old....most enjoyable part of my day is catching up on your weekly blog. Appreciated, thanks again. 👏👏👏👏💙🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🦘🦘🦘
Being from Maryland, I spent alot of time on the Upper Bay (North of the Bay Bridge) on his boat fishing. St Mary's Co is very cool! My daughter did her freshman year at SMCM. The Pax River Naval Air Station is what you passed and the tall bridge is Rt 4 which I've been over a few times. I believe we ate at the Lighthouse one time. My daughter transferred to Towson for the rest of her college time.
First, let me say how jealous I am of the conditions that you had on the Bay. It looked like glass. I had to laugh at the birds sitting on the water. I always tell my wife, "If the crab trap gets up and flies away, it's not a crab trap". I know this was filmed several months ago... but welcome to Maryland.
Just another given day on the Chesapeake Bay - sorta. Crab pot line wrapped around the prop- causing vibrations. Missing channel markers- and following a nuclear-powered attack sub leaving port. The weather was kinda nice. The waves not too bad. Parking lot of container ships- valet parking is extra. I'd say you all got off light on this trip. Hampton/Norfolk is one of the busier ports- because of the large Naval base. Hampton Roads is where the Monitor & Merrimac fought it out during the Civil War. Be lucky this trip wasn't done during the summer months. PAX River NAS - My dad use to fly out of there VP-661 back in the 60's. Solomons is such a cool little town. We had a beach cottage - Broomes Island/Parker's Wharf just up the Patuxent River from Solomons. It was a special treat to visit Solomons- for the day when I was young. * Baltimore IS separate from Maryland in some people's opinions, even though it is the largest city in this state. Another harbor port that is a very busy place. Viewing the container ships from the water can be intimidating for first time visitors- seeing them from the Bay Bridge is a whole different perspective.
That opening Mark Twain quote has been my guiding star for years and years, but stuff like work and family obligations sometimes got in the way. No complaints here because the aviation thing factored in for me with Twain's sage words of wisdom. Trying to make up for some missed experiences in retirement, we'll see how it goes. I don't think many of us get to the end of our life's bucket list but by damn it's sure fun trying. Good to see you guys are able to get way down your bucket list on this journey. Beware though, that bucket is bottomless! 😉 P.S. the brief scenes from the Solomons Is. MD YC bring back some oh so fond memories of some evenings we spent with the Panama City (FL) YC way back in the early 2000s.
Frustrating to start up the boat and suddenly have a vibration for no apparent reason. Our boats have a habit of breaking overnight when we aren’t watching. 😂 The Cruising Gods were with you on the Chesapeake, although hilarious that you mixed up Virginia and Maryland AND forgot that you’d actually BEEN to Maryland. Must be Loop-induced brain fog. BTW, Ollie looked like he ws enjoying the ride, resting on his fish pillow. What a great First Mutt. 🥰🐾
Another great video, which editing program do you use that you can add your green track on the map. Pretty cool, glad the vibration was nothing big. Cheers!
I think that traffic has a lot to do with all the problems with international shipping lately. Between striking longshoremen and catching up on port operations from collapsed bridges you're probably going to see a lot of parked ships.
Great first day on the Chesapeake with a little "spice" thrown in! Ironically I watched this the day before what would have been my favorite Aunts 91st birthday tomorrow. She passed away a few years ago but lived on the Maryland/Virginia border on the Atlantic side at Chincoteague Island. Many fond memories on the water there. Looking forward to the rest of your Chesapeake adventure! Can you tell me the date/time of year you were doing this part of the trip? safe travels!

Nice run today. Hope the Solomons Island Club lived up to your friends report.

Shoulda stopped at Yorktown, if you like history. Many other towns of interest on the Bay. You’re blasting through a great cruising ground.
Yep missed about 1,000 great places
