Parker 51 Next Generation (black) with medium steel nib, and quick writing comparison with a #6 western medium steel nib on Tomoe River paper. Thanks for watching! Actual pen stuff starts at 4:15
Thank you for an excellent video. I have two vintage Parker 51 pens, one vacumatic and the other aeromatic fillers. I really enjoy both pens but cleaning them is a pain. I did buy 2 of the Parker 51 reissues, both fine points, one in teal and the other in midnight blue. When I decided to buy the 51 reissue, I did not expect it to be exactly like the vintage 51. I happen to like how the reissue feels and writes. Mine write very smoothly and every time I use it. I have had no issues with hard starts or ink stuttering. They are well-balanced, simple and way easier to clean. Will I buy another one in a different color? Yes, I will. I think the people who have trashed the 51 reissue are expecting it to return them to the past. I had none of those expectations. I took the pen as is, a 2021 version of an iconic vintage pen. The body is made from resin instead of lucite (aka plexiglass aka acrylic resin), it has a screw cap which I prefer, and yes, the nib is probably the same as the jotter nib (which writes very nicely). Those purists who are disappointed in this pen should accept this pen as a different pen but with some of the characteristics of the original 51. Anyway, I enjoyed your video and it was good to see a positive review from someone who accepted the pen as it is, not as some nostalgic remade relic.
Thank you so much! Yeah, I think the reissue Parker 51 can definitely stand on its own, despite being a copy of sorts. It writes well, it feels great in the hand, has a fresh new look, etc. I echo your sentiments about why the haters might hate on it haha. I feel certain people want everything to either stay the same, or are resistant to change because it makes them uncomfortable. Or maybe they just like digging their heels into the sand when it comes to moving on lol. I kind of think of this little pen as an homage to the original Parker 51, being introduced to a whole new generation who might not want to buy an old chewed up pen with somebody else's initials engraved into it. I think it was a smart move by Parker, I hope it pays off for them. Thanks again! :)
@@inkfade4281 On the other hand... Aren't we now already arguing that it's 'not that bad'? In a better scenario we could be arguing that it's great right now. Like, why does the new pen come in the blandest, most basic box ever; so strange. Why is there nothing in the box that elaborates on the 51s heritage and it being by far Parker's most iconic product ever? Even a tiny pamphlet could have gone a long way appeasing the enthusiasts. No converter... on an $80 pen, not unheard of, but also not great. Just resin, just like on a Jotter. Cap could be engraved; basic but good pinstripes maybe? Probably would have been swell. I'll try to get some recorded this weekend, thanks so much for the feedback! My Parker 51 in teal came today. I absolutely love it. It is an excellent writer, medium point, steel lustraloy cap. I have no complaints. Some people are not happy with anything. Thanks for a great video.
I like your idea for journaling videos--what you described is exactly the type of journaling video I prefer. No music or talking, no art or fancy stuff, and quiet enough to hear the pen on paper. Love that type of video.
I'm so annoyed at all the purists hating this pen without trying it. I do have one of the previous releases of the 51 (with aerometric filling system) and I like it a lot, I would definitely like to try the 2021 at some point too. Good point about the filling mechanism, I despise cleaning the 51, so a regular converter is a win in my book. In terms of videos related to pens, inks and paper. Frankly I'm not keen on journalling videos, be it with/without music, art/junk or regular, even though I'm a journaler myself. But I know some people find watching these relaxing. I like ink and pen reviews, comparisons on different kinds of paper. I would also enjoy videos discussing new releases/trends, perhaps in the vein of anti-hauls.
I love the c/c filling system!!! So convenient! I did not mention it in the video as I didn't want to go off on another rambling tangent, but I have ordered a vintage 51 off eBay recently (plum w/silver cap!!!). Though I do not like the aerometric filling system, I can put up with it on one pen that I likely will try not to change inks too often. Will have a video for that one, too, when it comes, and do a comparison between it and the new one. Thanks so much for your feedback! When you say discussing new releases, do you mean even if I do not have the product yet? I had to look up what you meant by anti-haul, and I love, love that idea! That's actually been a worry of mine since starting this channel. I am NOT the type of person to buy every new release or collect every color of the new TWSBI (even though at one point I owned close to ten Safaris lol but only colors I genuinely enjoyed, not for collecting's sake). I'm worried I won't have lots of products to review to keep things fresh, as I am an aspiring minimalist and want to keep my collection likely below ten pens, and my ink collection even smaller. Of course I am always searching for something that might be better, but I am an incredibly picky person when it comes to my pens and inks, so the new products for me would be slow coming. I don't buy as much stuff as other TH-camrs I've seen, who post multiple videos per week of new pens or inks or pen cases they've bought. The thought of getting a new pen in the mail every two days gives me major anxiety. I've been there, done that, and it sucks--just the sheer amount of accumulation. This actually is giving me ideas for videos, maybe about being happy with little collections, or not chasing every new model that comes out. Finding a good balance, being satisfied with only the pens that you truly love. Thank you so much for this comment, it's given me some great ideas!! :D
@@inkfade4281 Bear in mind a lot of established YTubers get stuff sent to them or shops basically lend items to them (which they have to send back). For some people it's the only hobby and they have no other financial priorities. I admit, it's easy to get FOMO (been there, done that):( Like a lot of hobbies, this can get very expensive. The key is not accumulating, but enjoying the stuff you have. I love videos on small collections ("small" is also relative), seeing how other people select items they keep and use all the time. Yes, discussing new releases would be when you see some pens coming out and then you telling us why you're not buying them ("what I'm not gonna buy", check out Kimberly Clark in the makeup space for this type of video).
@@laitae Oh yeah you're right, I forgot about gifting products like that! Yeah, I used to want to be included in the latest fp trends, and sometimes still resist the urge to do so. Have to tell myself, "You already KNOW you won't use that, why obsess over it?" It's an ongoing battle, but it's getting better. I see. That sounds like a very interesting idea, I will definitely try to flesh that idea out into a video. Would it come off as holier-than-thou, though? I imagine some people might appreciate it, however. I would be the type of person to appreciate it, since I'm trying to always move away from accumulation. Thanks so much!
@@inkfade4281 I think it would be useful to include a disclaimer at the start that you're just trying to talk yourself out of these pens/inks (etc) and it may help other people in making a decision:)
Regarding your opening remarks on this video, some folks looking at journaling look for ideas on "topics" to journal on - what's noteworthy - what kind of journaling will be appreciated two, five, ten years from now. Many times I pray through journaling, which of course you probably would not want to video that, but then again, prayers written down, followed by prayers answered when and how - can be quite helpful. Moving to your review of the Parker 51, my dad used Parker 51 fountain pens while attending Florida State sixty years ago and then passed it on to me. So I appreciated your thoughts on this re-issued classic pen. Thank you.
This is a wonderful idea! I always see this question posed in journaling forums I am in, so a video would be nice to make on the topic. What a special pen! I imagine it has a lot of meaning to you, I would love to have something functional like that passed down to me that I might use all the time.
Thank you for that review !!!! Agree with you on people who have a strong opinion on that pen and don't even own it !!! How ridiculous it is !!! I picked up exactly the same one couple of days ago and absolutely love it !!! I'm planing on getting other colors as well when available. It's everything I thought that pen would be since I saw the releasing posts. It's simple, plain and bold at the same time and that's one of the reason I love it. I don't really understand why people thought Parker is releasing the vintage 51 because that's what you can get from most of the reviews. Seems like most people don't understand "the new generation" meaning. Have to say thank you Parker for that 51 pen !! It's truly one of my favorite Parker pen and it just became my everyday use pen.
Q.III is the Parker date code meaning they made the pen the First Quarter of 2020. I got the teal barrel FP and BP. Having used and collected vintage 51's, this generation is a good re-issue. The point section hooded over the nib better in the vintage 51's.
I did know that the plum/gold and black/gold had actual gold nibs, but I'm just not a fan of gold caps/finials, etc. so went with the plain chrome/steel combo. I'm surprised they are actually made in France! That's good to know.
This video has me seriously considering the reissue of the Parker 51. I have only heard hate on it, and I’ve never used an original, so there’s no preconceptions holding me back. I love the style of the pen and the hooded nib is beautiful. I would love to see quiet journaling videos. I love watching someone write, especially with a fountain pen. It gives me a real sense of how a combo performs. Will you showcase the pen and ink names in some way, either a separate piece of paper with the names or text at the bottom of the screen, or even listed in the description below? Will you give your thoughts on the pen/ink combo and what you like or dislike about using it for long form journaling? No expectations here, just thoughts I had as you were talking about the style of video you are interested in producing. I’m not sure if you intend to showcase the pen and ink as a sub focus of the video. If not, that’s awesome too. I just love watching people write. I think it’s an excellent journal with me style. Thank you so much for sharing! 🧡🖋
I would definitely give it a try! I am liking it more and more, especially since journaling with it a couple of times today. Hooded nibs are awesome, I love the way they look. Awesome! I planned on listing the pen, ink, and paper used in the description, but also at times might just mention it at the beginning or end of the video. I would definitely want to showcase the ink going onto the paper. I'm thinking up close shots of certain sentences just to showcase the wetness and color. Thanks so much for your feedback! I'm very excited to make a journal with me video. :)
Could you add the link for the converter? I'm finding one called the Parker Deluxe Fountain Pen Converter, one called Parker Fountain Pen Twist Converter, another called Parker Fountain Pen Converter, Standard. I'm also reading "compatible with MOST Parker fountain pens" which makes me question if it'll fit the new Parker 51.
As for the direction of your channel, I say: do what you want. 😂 I love watching journaling videos. I know you mentioned camera angles, but I hope it’s also possible to hear the pen on the paper. I love writing sounds, so if you don’t want to talk, I’d love to at least hear some of the pen on paper sound. I hope you continue to do ink swatch videos sometimes, because I love swatch videos, and yours are really relaxing to watch. As for the pen, this is awesome!! I admit it wasn’t even on my radar because I have a vintage one, and I like everything but the filling system (mine is aerometric so it has the sac squeeze thing - I have one of those vacuummatic wing sungs or Jinhaos or whatever they are, and I hate cleaning that one too 😂). I also don’t use my vintage one very often, so I didn’t think about wanting a new one. Ilove the slip cap of the old version vs the screw cap of the new version, but being able to use a converter is awesome. Still not sure if I’ll get one, but I’ll definitely have to take a closer look at the new version. I’d like to say I’m not surprised by pen people pooping on a new version, but I’m not? 😂 I know you tuned yours, but I LOVE how wetly your pen writes. Thanks so much for sharing!
I am going to definitely do the journal with me videos, I was just wondering what people may not like about it, since what I dislike in videos like that might be quite popular lol. Oh the scratching of the nib on paper would be the main part! That's why I wouldn't talk, so the rustling paper and nib on it could be heard. I'm going to try to record a couple of swatch videos today, I have more than enough ink samples! Also, I did try the Sailor Oregon ink you sent me (and the extra samples, thank you so much!). I did like the color and the black sheen, but it wasn't as... vibrant(?) as Lamy Peridot, which is my favorite green. I had ordered a bunch of green samples in the mail and I simply cannot find anything even close to it. I think I'm just going to have to give up on finding a green similar to Peridot without sheen. :( I actually have purchased a vintage 51 (plum/chrome) and it should be here this week sometime after 2+ weeks in limbo at customs lol. I hate the aerometric filling system, but for a plum/silver combo I can put up with it. I likely will only keep it inked up with De Atramentis Aubergine. I've always liked the plum but never taken the plunge. I like both snap and twist caps, so the change there didn't particularly bother me. I know I'd seen people in discussions just raging over the fact that they made it twist instead of slip lol. Such a small thing to get angry over. Thanks so much! I love super wet writers, I like the way the ink pools on the page. It just looks so good, and generally really brings out the color of the ink.
Hmm I am trying to think of how I would make a video on this. I actually further smoothed my Pelikan m605 today successfully, and while doing it kept your comment in mind and was trying to decide how I would show it on a video. I admit that I'd be nervous for people to listen to me about that, as I wouldn't want anyone to ruin their nibs based on advice from me. I just tinkered with nibs myself and over time was able to do it well enough, though sometimes I still mess nibs up and make them write worse than before haha. I will keep this in mind, though, and maybe next time I buy a pen that needs some tuning I'll make a video on it. Thank you for the suggestion! :D
@@inkfade4281 I know exactly what you mean and can understand your reluctance. Perhaps if you made it clear at the outset that people should only try this themselves with a pen they are prepared to sacrifice if they mess up?
It looks like a nice pen! I can see being a little annoyed that it isnt a snap cap (tho I like both so 🤷, but idk how anyone can argue that a c/c is worse than the aeromatic system. Do you have a video about the Lamy Obsidian? Im always interested in black inks. XD I haven’t watched many journaling videos, but the ones Ive seen usually werent using fountain pens and ink. Are they meant to be interactive/community minded? Like writing using a shared prompt? I think either way, the idea you described in this video is cool too.
I like both snap and screw caps, also, so I don't mind either way. Lol that's my thinking. I inked this pen up originally with another ink and then cleaned it out to put Obsidian in it, and it took me all of eight seconds with a bulb syringe to completely rinse it out. Can't do that with aerometric! I can definitely make a video on Lamy Obsidian! It's quickly become one of my favorite inks. Hmm idk about those types of videos meant to be interactive. I think some people might do prompts or something and encourage the viewer to do the same. My videos would likely just be a quiet recording from different angles of me journaling, nib to paper. Just something relaxing, as I've had people tell me they like videos like that and often will put it on in the background as they themselves journal or otherwise mellow out. :)
This was a while ago, but if I recall correctly, I held the pen at a very flat angle and slowly, gently pressed the nib against a hard but still soft surface (like on a few sheets of paper on a table or something) to slightly spread the tines. After that probably ran it across some micromesh to smooth it a bit. If it had been a removal nib, I would have taken the nib out, laid it on a hard but softish surface and used my thumb to press the shoulders of the nib slightly apart to get it writing wetter.
I never enjoyed watching a “talking hands” video. I am not a fan of Western medium nibs but like the quality of your handwriting. So many people demonstrating their pens do not have an attractive style and distract from a pens ability to produce an attractive handwriting. What is even more disappointing is in some handwriting samples they will print. A quality cursive handwriting is a gem. I am going to hit your subscribe button and follow your videos.
Yeah, I feel they are a bit impersonal. I'm excited to begin the headshot videos, once we move into a nicer space. I have loads of ideas for videos in that format that I'm pretty excited for. Thank you so much! I do find it difficult in other people's videos to get a good feel for the nib if the writing is not cursive or similar to my own style. LOL the horror of printing! I find printing slows me down; I can write much faster in cursive, and it just looks so much nicer. Thank you again, I greatly appreciate your feedback! :)
Did you get any pamphlet or instructions in the box with the pen?? Why is it not shown on the Parker.com website?? They have are all their other current pens?

Like a lot of hobbies, this can get very expensive.
The plum version has a gold nib, hence the higher price. This one has a steel nib. And yes they are made in France.
@@inkfade4281 That sounds awesome. I look forward to it. 🤘🏼
I have the Twist Converter, got it off Amazon. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00135JVKQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I actually have purchased a vintage 51 (plum/chrome) and it should be here this week sometime after 2+ weeks in limbo at customs lol.
Could you show us what you did to tune it? That would be very useful. Sorry if it appears elsewhere.
I too would like to know how you made the nib wetter with the hooded nib. I just ordered one and I do like a wet nib!
It looks like a nice pen! I can see being a little annoyed that it isnt a snap cap (tho I like both so 🤷, but idk how anyone can argue that a c/c is worse than the aeromatic system.
Do you have a video about the Lamy Obsidian? Im always interested in black inks. XD
I haven’t watched many journaling videos, but the ones Ive seen usually werent using fountain pens and ink.
When you say that you “tuned” the nib, how exactly did you go about doing that?
Thank you for the video :)
Did you get any pamphlet or instructions in the box with the pen??
Why is it not shown on the Parker.com website?? They have are all their other current pens?
The only thing that came in the box was a blue cartridge, no instructions or anything.
@@inkfade4281 interesting. The Waterman Allure that i bought last year for around 20$ included a nice instruction sheet on how to use the pen and even clean it .
Thanks very much for your response. 😀😀
New Parker 51 2021 is made whith plástico ir Radite? Radite is a special plastic from Parker brand. Radite is not a simple plastic. Radite is produce by Dupont.
Parker 51, 2021, hace the same feed that Parker 88.
Your channel your choice was my fist thought. But I do like to see people’s faces, neat or crafty messy background. When it’s ink and writing related I like it all, an
Whoops...
And I’m definitely with you on the music! Too distracting! now on to the pen section! xx Dag (paperdag)
I am likely going to do the journal with me videos anyway, though a couple have said they wouldn't really care for them, and that's totally fine! I know there's some people out there that would like them, as I really like them. But I'll still have plenty of pen/ink/paper stuff for the people that don't care for the journaling videos, too!
Yeah, I've never been a fan of music overlaid on videos, as it's usually music that is annoying to me. I'd rather hear the person talking or total silence lol.
Thanks!!!
Thank YOUUUUUUUUUUU
