    The Black Americans in the novel were not sent to "western civilization". They were deported to the west of the country and put on "reservations", much like Native Americans were forcibly displaced from their land in the 18th and 19th century. The novel DOES go into detail about how LGBTQ people were treated: If found out, they were executed. The novel was written prior to gay marriage being made legal, and there is no Emily character in the book. The items in the grocery store couldn't have writing on them not because the women *couldn't* read, but that they weren't permitted to read, and that meant they weren't supposed to even look at writing.
    Whoever wrote the narration for this video doesn't know a damn thing and the narrator himself sounds like he's reading this all phonetically and doesn't have any idea what he's saying. "The uprising of women"?

      I am Christian in Spain. I've never been told I'm rubbish because I'm woman. It depends on the religious group you're. Disgracefully there are fundamentalist everywhere but the depth of Christianity is not that but rather love and respect. There's a big ignorance about the Bible. I think that one thing is the Old Testament and another the New one.

    Not entirely true, one of the main hand maid characters in the first book was a lesbian. For another crime her hands were burnt and she was sent to one of the Jezebels which was one of the great ironies of the story. A lesbian woman forced to work in a brothel.

    A great series which is simultaneously addictive and harrowing. What I don't quite understand is the position that the handmaids are meant to occupy in Gilead's hierarchical structure. If I remember correctly, the women who are rounded up and forced to become handmaids are those whom society views as miscreants; consisting of the female "dregs" of society. To become a handmaid is essentially a form of punishment, as is evident when the closet Muslim is hanged and his wife demoted to the role of handmaid.
    On the other hand, the handmaids are consistently told that they are the key to the future of Gilead's survival and are exalted as such. Why would Gilead choose to repopulate its republic through the offspring of errant "undesirables" ?

    • @nicolesanderson8757
      @nicolesanderson8757 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's what I don't understand either, I feel like if the wealthy are being given handmaid's why wouldn't they, or couldn't they, just hire someone willing?.. like real surrogates? I understand this was a last ditch effort to repopulate the world but I feel like if it's so rare to have fertile women that they wouldn't be trying to kill the ones who do end up having healthy babies such as in season 1. (I just started season 2actually) it seems like punishment and control of women is more important than actually having the babies.

    • @maryclaremayo6157
      @maryclaremayo6157 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Lawrence Skelton @Nicole Sanderson Women are rendered infertile from environmental causes. There are only a very few women who ARE still fertile. They're rounded up and forced to become Handmaids so that the ruling class can carry on the lineage, by the men using the Handmaids as vessels to carry their seed. It's based on the biblical tale of Rachel. They are 'exalted' but they also must be controlled because they are not willing participants in this nightmare, they're normal people who are being enslaved. They're told that they are special, but if they step out of line, they're punished severely. They murder the ones who rebel as a show of power and to keep the others terrified of 'misbehaving.'
      "Back in the days of sanctioned polygamy, Rachel and Leah are sisters married to Jacob. Leah has no trouble having son after son, but her sister, Rachel - the woman whom Jacob loves - can’t get pregnant. Rachel convinces Jacob to impregnate her handmaid, Bilhah, so Rachel can have children “through” her. Bilhah gives birth to two sons, and Rachel names them both. Notably, Bilhah’s voice is never heard at any point in the Bible.
      As Genesis 30:1-3 goes, “And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her” "

      @@maryclaremayo6157 Thanks for the explanation. Now I get the "Sons of Jacob" reference. I've started watching season 4, and I was struck by two factors.
      1. We've been led to believe throughout the series that Gilead is literally hell on earth, and understandably so. Then we are introduced to one of the rescued children, a boy, living in Canada with his aunt. He feels despondent and confused, asking for "his Martha", and wishing he could return to the only way of life he has ever known. This scene is especially poignant as it comes after Fred's claim that the "abducted" children should be returned to their families. This would seem to imply that life as a male child, particularly that of a son of a commander, must be good in Gilead so long as he didn't cross the authorities.
      2. After June is captured, she is blackmailed into revealing the location of the other handmaids when her daughter is used as leverage. She claims how Gilead would never harm a child, to which Commander Lawrence replies that "It was never about the children. It's always been about power. You should know that by now." One can certainly draw parallels with both past and present despotic regimes, whereby they claim to be bettering the lives of the people. You could argue that this is simply one opinion of a commander who has grown disillusioned with the system. Ultimately, however, Gilead is run by those who, first and foremost, wish to hold onto power no matter what.

    In the show, Gilead is the new name for a segment of the former United States -- Gilead is not a city but the *territory now controlled by Christian Dominionists*.

    • @teambrad3777
      @teambrad3777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Not Christian.
      Using the Bible doesn’t make them Christians. True Christians don’t want to live in Gilead or take away people’s freedoms or use them and sexual slaves. The Old Testament allowed for handmaids in Israel for a specific time in history. But that was over long ago and Christianity knows no such practice.
      Gilead is a religious political cult that doesn’t believe or obey Christianity. You can’t love others as yourself, which is the basis of Christ’s teachings, if you are a leader in Gilead. It’s impossible.

      @@teambrad3777 I wish I could agree with you. But you've cited the "no true Scotsman" fallacy by claiming no "real" Christian would do terrible things that people have actually done in the name of Christ. Google "no true Scotsman" for a definition.
      Christians aren't licensed, like doctors, so anyone can claim they are a follower of Christ. Arguing that they aren't "Christian" is simply a matter of personal opinion -- they're Christian if they say they are.
      Incidentally, Gilead uses the Christian cross as one of its symbols -- they may not believe in and obey all the teachings of Christianity, but they're certainly using the trappings of that religion to establish their power.
      Historical note: The Inquisition was conducted in part by the Dominicans, an order of friars, nuns and priests in the Catholic church. They would have disagreed with anyone who insisted they were not Christian -- and when the Inquisition disagreed with you, you were in deep trouble.

    It should be noted that the scenes taken regarding the Bible mainly come from the Old Testament. In Christianity, it is called "Old" for many reasons with the over arching theme of God's Covenant of faith with His people. Every Book in the Bible is significant and different. With that, one cannot have a New Testament without the Old. The birth, life, crucifixion and resurrection of God's Son Jesus Christ is God's "New" Covenant with his people. He sent a Savior for His people. The New Testament replaces the Old. The "Old" is His Story. It's history, from times gone by that we can learn from as to how a Savior was needed. The "New" His Story is history we can project for our our own lives, from beginning to end to Eternity. I hope this makes sense, as I am a Christian Apologist, not a proselytizing judge.

    • @eveharris30

      @verdeirisado 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am Christian (and also fan of the Handmaid's Tale 😂) I am scared with the reductionist point of view of the Bible this serie or the book has. As you explain so well, the Bible has different historical books and a universe of interpretations or disgraceful misinterpretations. If you understand literally the Old Testament and there's not a reading of the new one, then there's a big lackness that causes things as Gilead or other horrors.
      With JesusChrist there's a necessary change. A change of love and respect that gives sense to the whole Bible. So, in this fiction there's not Christianism. There's a fictional horror that certainly occurs in fundamentalist groups.
