I had exact same problem and could not figure out why , This fantastic video certainly addresses the mystery ! What are the dimensions of the correct seal please ?
I tried several different seals and none of them worked. I bought seals from popular moped suppliers and they didn't work. I came across a couple NOS engines for an Ariel 3 and used the seal along with the new cylinder, rod and some clutch parts. It wasn't 100% compatible or else I would have used the whole engine. I never did find a good source
