    Barry's scrap yard is famous in the UK preservation scene. If you've been to a UK preservation railway, there is VERY high chance the engine pulling you spent time there. The fact Barry just let the engines sit in his yard was a stroke of unimaginable good fortune for preservation railways. As every other scrap contractor cut them up as soon as they rolled in the yard. But not Barry. So when preservation started to get going. Barry was the only person who had anything left in any meaningful quantity to be preserved.
    Without Barrys scrap yard, the preservation scene would be a shadow of what it is today.

    • @waylander1697
      @waylander1697 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have to agree, I'm starting to think that Barry disguised the yard as a scrapyard, even though it was a secret preservation yard, and some of us know that many or some of the trains were sent to undisclosed or private locations.

      Hopefully British Railways or, as it's known today as "British Rail" will not find out.

    Barry Island scrapyard has been empty for at least 20 years. Dai Woodham made the decision to keep the steam locomotives because he was making so much money from scrapping coal trucks. He inadvertently saved nearly a thousand steam engines and just about every single locomotive is in preservation, either restored to full working order, or awaiting restoration.

    • @PreservationEnthusiast
      @PreservationEnthusiast ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong and wrong. 213 made it out of Barry. Not 1000s. Dai also cut up about 84 steam locos, mostly GWR types.

      Why? Barry's scrap yard was a god send for preservation. The vast majority of engines you see there are running today because they had the good fortune to be sent to barry. There are stories of engine crews deliberately manipulating their orders to make it so their engine went to Barry and not one of the many other scrappers, all of whome appart from Barry cut the engines down to melt as soon as they arrived.

    Many of these are now wonderfully restored like No. 71000 Duke of Gloucester.
    But many loco's are still in the condition how they came from Barry, one of them is just recently started on at the railway I volunteer at, dismantling a loco that stood in the open for more than 50 years since withdrawal is no mean feat.
    Some of the loco's from Barry are parted and used in recreation projects to create newbuilds of classes with no original survivors, like the GWR Grange, 48xx Night Owl and hawksworth County, this was posiible thanks to widespread standardisation at the GWR after Churchward got CME.
    Biggest mistake however was the scrapping of D601, a NBL diesel shown in the video, it was marked for preservation but in 1980 it was considered too far gone to restore and broken up, none of the NBL mainline diesel survive, and there are now plans to rebuild on of the smaller D6300 class which has 4 axles and one engine compared to the 6 axles and 2 engines of D601, and original engine has been sourced, there are 2 of these engines known to have survived in the UK.

    It is no good trying to explain to our nameless scrapper the excitement one feels watching a steam locomotive in full throttle. The involvement and romance one has felt over the many years of following these magnificent ‘beings’ up and down the country and on every main and branch line. A mixture of locos ranging from the shunting tank to the grand express version such as the present Flying Scotsman and Tornado. I have been transfixed by these dirty, smelly and noisy things for decades. I would assume that our scrapper is of a younger generation. I am sorry that my fascination has passed you by. Train travel must be rather tedious for you.

I remember the thrill when the Flying Scotsman was thundering up the line in clouds of smoke and steam and warning bells rang like fury as the porters made sure that we were all behind the yellow line on the platform. Then the monster thundered through the station like a dragon smelling of oil and smoke with the Pullman coaches just a flashing blur. It was such an exhilarating feeling.

      You clearly don't know the story of the Barry yard. Dai Woodham was no nameless scrapper and long before he died he knew that without his efforts there would have been no heritage railway industry. He held on to the engines while enthusiasts raised the money to purchase them, a process that often took years. He never admitted to being an enthusiast himself, but he knew where it was all going and his sons have said that he was immensely proud of what he had achieved.

      Correct. It is now a supermarket. The remaining locos known as the Barry 10 were removed some were scrapped for spare parts. Others live on unrestored. We are lobbying and campaigning to send these for scrap.

    They all look like ugly, rusty, wrecks........ah, but look again.......inside that rusty wreck is a live steam engine just waiting to have some tender loving care to come back to life almost as good as new. The worst days work BR ever did was removing steam so quickly, and they paid the price.....the 1970's OPEC oil crisis saw to that. Demanning, throwing staff on the scrap heap, and ripping up the network in favour of the car was their idea. And now? Seems the tide is turning again. Idiots....the UK sat on top of 300 years reserve of coal, and the British public in love with steam locomotives, and they scap the lot in one fail swoop. Today it is my and many others belief that steam should return to the mainline in the UK. Steam locomotives have earned that right.
