    Good stuffff. If I wasn’t planning on doing real estate eventually, I would’ve definitely picked this over the 17-28 and sigma’s 28-70. I think 20-50 would’ve made this a whole lot more attractive as a standard zoom, but this still feels like a wide angle zoom to me. It’s one of a kind optic and I love that tamron made it, especially for such a low price. I hope it inspires sigma to get out there and make something similar, or better..

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely want to see sigma's attempt to counter like they did the 17-28, and I still have the 17-28 and 28-70 however I can see their usage being diminished. The 17-28 will likely be gone, the 28-70 has a soft spot because I do use it a ton, but for how long before it starts to become redundant? First world problems :D

      I just got this, and I am selling my Sigma 16-28. I just like the 20-40mm so much better. It's tiny and has such a good focal range, and it focuses really close. It also overlaps nicely with the Tamron 35-150mm if you have one of those. As for when you need to go even wider, I'm holding out hope for a small, wide prime to get released. Canon made a $299 RF 16mm f/2.8, and it's absolutely tiny. It'd be really nice if Tamron made a 16mm to add to their cheap 20/24/35mm prime collection.

    Ah, thanks for this! Iwas excited for this lens but reviews of it have not been glowing. I have the 17-28 but don't really like that focal range as 28 is too limiting and I don't really love the ultrawide images. 20mm at the wide would suffice for needs, I think. I was actually leaning toward picking up the 20mm G instead. Please could you do a comparison of this 20-40 with the 17-28 lens? That would be very helpful ( and good content..... or so your wife says!)

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      based on the eye test, they seem comparable in sharpness, the 20-40 has better bokeh and blur ability with +12mm, and 3mm loss, might be more significant for UWA junkies. Will do a video on a lot of the UWA's I have and hoping to get them all at the same time.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider ปีที่แล้ว

      Reviews have been pretty positive, though. People aren't saying that it's the best wide angle zoom lens, but it's way cheaper, way smaller, and everyone agrees that it's good enough.

      I have the 20mm 1.8 and it’s amazing but I’m considering this lens to get that extra zoom for pictures. The 20 is great for video but I want to zoom when I’m ready to snap a pic of my family. I’d love to see them compared side by side.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      scenic/vlog 20-40, people/emotions 24-70. A 24-70 is an incredible range and hard to go wrong. 24 is wide enough mostly, issue is with filming videos, it can get tight real fast. If your framing is a tiny off, you need to crop, if you have active stabilization, 10% penalty, aspect ratio of 16:9 in itself, is a crop. If you can make the 24 work, definitely go that route, and if not, the the 20-40 is great in its own way. happens to be the newer optic and sharper all around. I travel with an ultra wide as primary, many years back when I was photos only, I could easily make do with a 24-70. If I were to walk out the door right now to an unknown location, I would definitely grab one of the two, a lot of outdoors, 24-70, a lot of indoors/close access, 20-40. Hope that makes sense.

      Travel lens? Look at getting the Tamron 28 -200 . It is a very good lens, does great near macro shots and the same size as their 28-75 f2.8. and priced favourably. Nicely balanced on the A7C. Pair it with one fast prime and you have a versatile but small kit.

      custom vlog stick that allows me to carry a much heavier rig if I wanted to without fatigue, would be nice if someone commercially turned this idea into a product? Some of my past videos where I use two cameras vlogging at the same time, this is what I use.

    I feel like Tamron should follow the example of brands like Samyang and not hold back from their features. Briefly seeing the custom button in the 28-75 G2 and then not seeing it here makes it seem like we’ll have to wait for future generations before getting those features. Thanks for the review!

    I also have the 16-35 and I'd totally go with the Tamron over the Sony. It is PZ so for video it's nice but for photo the Taron takes the cake.

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  ปีที่แล้ว

      that background blur with the tamron is nice, when I went from the tamron 17-28 -> 16-35, the blur was not far off at 28 vs 35, but 40 and f2.8 well..... that does work out well.

  • @julian.cameraman
    @julian.cameraman ปีที่แล้ว

    The speed it maintain focus back is not acceptable, my old Tamron 28-75 does it much better - when changing the focal length I can't notice the loss of focus. Here, the moment I start changing the focal ring the whole image is blurry.
    I ordered a second lens to compare, hoping it's just a defective one...

    Hello. I love following your channel. I even bought the Accsoon brand apparatus after the review on your channel.I also have a sony A7IV machine. I am currently looking for lenses. I have sony 24-70 f2.8, sony Zeiss 16-35 F4, sony 90 mm macro lens, sigma 35 mm f1.4 lens and sony 50 mm f2.5 lenses.
    Sony 24-70 and 0 sigma 35 1.4 lenses are very heavy. Since I am also involved in the video business, I am looking for wide angle and light but quality lens that I will use with the zyun crane m3 and moza air cros 2 gimball.
    I want to ask you. Which would you recommend Sony 16-35 F/4 PZ or Tamron 20-40mm f2.8. Or Tamron 28-75 2nd version? Can you have any other suggestions?
    Thank you

    • @CharlieVN
      @CharlieVN  ปีที่แล้ว

      if you're flying a gimbal, the 16mm is probably the best shot you've got going, the sony 16-35 pz has a ton going for it for video use, the tamron 2.8's are more people oriented with the 20-40 having a mix of both, while not being the better choice at either. As for the Accsoon mention, they sent me their product to review recently, I gotta fulfill that soon 😅
