Puja - A Night Ritual in Durbar Square (Nepal) - Visual Anthropology Short Documentary

Imagine this. Imagine that you are walking through the dark streets of an unknown city, far from home, where you landed just a few days before. A mixture of sensations inside you: curiosity, excitement, fear. Imagine this city is Kathmandu, and in fact it is. You are walking in the royal square of the city, in one of the most ancient neighborhoods of humankind. Suddenly you are drawn to a whirlwind of musical instruments and a smooth, flowing rhythm that gets louder as you get closer. Around, a handful of people have gathered and are looking inside. Inside, a ceremony is officiated by a young guru, who has just returned from a long retreat in the forest, assisted by a small circle of helpers. That small dark alcove, with faded images of various deities on the walls, with a fire in the center, seems to symbolize the forge of the world, where all the elements of which life is composed are handled and processed. Water, fire , air and the earth, to extract the eternal spirit that animates everything. It is a small microcosm, a micro act, which has patiently, since time immemorial, taken its place in the nightly streets of Kathmandu, to repeat and reaffirm life and the world. And by chance, one night, I was lucky enough to witness it. For me it was natural to take out my third eye, the video camera, and point it at the ritual in progress, with attention and respect, trying to disturb as little as possible, so much so that no one really seemed to have paid too much attention. I was eventually invited after the ritual to join the guru and his helpers, something which could not be taken in camera and will stay only with me and with my memories of that magical night.
