Izumi Sinfonietta Osaka is one of the leading chamber orchestras in Japan, well known as a specialist in performing contemporary music. It is the resident orchestra of Izumi Hall, the acclaimed classical music concert hall in Osaka. The music director is the renowned composer Akira Nishimura.
Since its debut on July 8, 2000, the orchestra has been developing its repertoire, giving the world premieres of 35 works (including 27 commissioned works). Most of them are new works by Japanese composers.
The core ensemble comprises flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, piano, harp, strings and percussion, but it can be presented in various combinations according to the requirements of the works.
Two original CDs have been released.
Izumi Sinfonietta Osaka received the Osaka Performing Arts Prize in 2001.
