Well actually the load can be connected to either emitter or collector. But for the design perspective when it is connected to collector, ( particularly for switching application), the design becomes much more simpler. Since emitter is connected to ground, the base voltage is at 0.7V. For the given control voltage, you can easily estimate the base current and the required current gain from the Darlington pair to drive the load. Basically, you can select he required Darlington pair according to your requirement. And it becomes easier when the load is connected at collection. I hope it will clear your doubt.

why is the ouptut taken at the emitter in the darlington pair, whereas the output is taken at the collector for a transistor pls help
Why is the load connected in the Collector side, shouldn't we get a little more gain in emitter side?
Here it is used as a switch. To drive heavy load. ( High current)
