"Hold On, I'm Comin'" (officially registered as "Hold On, I'm Coming",[1] and shown on the original single release as "Hold On! I'm Comin'" and "Hold On! I'm a Comin'")[2] is a 1966 single recorded by soul duo Sam & Dave, issued on the Atlantic-distributed Stax label in 1966.
The song was written by the songwriting team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, who came up with the title of the song spontaneously when Hayes was trying to get Porter to hurry out of the Stax Studios restroom and get back to songwriting.[3] The original title was "Hold On, I'm Comin'", but some radio stations objected to its "suggestive nature", and labels on most copies of the single gave the title as "Hold On! I'm A Comin'".[2] Released as Stax 189 in the spring of 1966, the single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B singles chart and at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.[3]
Following the instrumental introduction, Sam sings the first verse and is joined by Dave for the chorus. Dave sings the second verse and is joined by Sam for the chorus. In the bridge section, Dave sings the first part and Sam sings the second part, which is followed by a brief instrumental passage. Sam sings the third verse and is joined by Dave for the chorus. The introduction is repeated in the chorus, with both Sam and Dave singing until the song fades out.
A revamped version of the song, "Hold On, Edwin's Coming", was recorded by Sam & Dave as a promotional single for Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards' third election campaign in 1982. Three years later, Dave Prater teamed with new singing partner Sam Daniels as "The New Sam and Dave Review" and recorded "Medley/Hold On, I'm Comin'" for Atlantic Records.

Tasty! Five plus decades later and it still slays. Sam & Dave were one of the greatest live acts of the 1960s and second only to Aretha Franklin in consistent success on the R&B charts that decade. "Hold On, I'm Comin'" was a top forty hit in the pop charts and a number one hit on the R&B charts in 1966. Sam & Dave recorded for Stax records where Booker T. & the M.G.'s were more or less the house band. Sam Moore thanks them at the start of the interlude, where he asks them to join him in a bottle of gin -- Booker T. Jones piano, Steve Cropper guitar, Donald Dunn bass guitar, Al Jackson Jr. drums, plus The Memphis Horns to boot! I bought a copy of Sam & Dave's greatest hits back in the 80's, but my first exposure to their music came from The Blues Brothers movie in 1980 -- with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi basically filling in for Sam & Dave -- right down to fronting a band featuring Steve Cropper and Donald Dunn. When you're ready for more classics from Sam & Dave, check out "Soul Man", "You Don't Know Like I Know", "When Something is Wrong with My Baby", "I Thank You", and "Wrap It Up" along with many others.

Who doesn't love Sam and Dave. The live version is cool, but for the vocals check out the studio cut. Cheers E

Dig into that old-school because it's absolutely incredible. You ever heard of "The whispers"? A good starting point is "The beat goes on."

Well, well. Empress has a patreon that recognizes some cream of the crop music. Next of course should be "Soul Man". The greatest R&B duo of all time. Understand, without Sam Cooke, who left gospel music for secular music 12 years before this song, there would be no Sam and Dave, and no soul music. I've asked you to do Sam and Jackie Wilson before, but just like Lisa Fischer, I guess that won't happen, or the wait will be 1 1/2 years or more.

@@Angel-vg2zf Keep up the good recommendations. Hopefully you'll recommend some of the singers I've been trying to get her to react to for almost 2 years now. For example, I recommended Lisa Fischer and Denise Williams quite awhile ago and quite a few times, and got crickets. She reacted to them and, especially with Lisa Fischer, asked why hadn't she heard about her? Meanwhile I asked about 5 times. I've also recommended Sam Cooke, Smokie Robinson, and Jackie Wilson. She'd rather do Kylie Minogue 20 times. Maybe you'll have better luck.

Thank you for mentioning the church aspect. A lot of people know to give credit to the blues pioneers of modern styles of music, but I don't think as many people realise just how much of an influence the black church, and gospel in general, was on the development of musical styles like rock 'n' roll, R&B, and soul music.
