  • Is orthodox Islam possible without Sufism? Sufi World presents an exclusive lecture with Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad (Dr. Timothy Winter) who delivers a lecture of great importance at the VU University in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After breaking down the main question, Shaykh explains us what it actually means to be a Sunni Muslim and how Tasawwuf is at the heart of Islam. A powerful lecture and Q&A that cover the solution to most of today's issues.
    We do not call Sunni Islam just Sunni Islam but Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, the people of the Sunnah, because the ultimate point of authority is the Holy Prophet (ﷺ). We are not going to accept anybody's interference with that. Also the consensus of the scholars. Thousands upon thousands purified souls and great scholarly minds discussing what the Hadith means and telling the Ummah what is the most likely interpretation. Not just an individual’s view of what the meaning might be.
    "Our thank goes out to FSR Godgeleerdheid (Student Council of the Faculty of Theology at the VU Amsterdam) for organising the event."

    For anyone wondering, here is the hadith cited 26 minutes in about the bedouin assaulting the Prophet, upon whom be peace: “I was walking with the Messenger of Allah, and he was wearing a Najrani cloak with a rough collar. A Bedouin man caught up with him, then violently pulled him by his cloak, causing the cloak to tear, and leaving its collar [hanging] on the neck of Allah’s Messenger. I looked at the Messenger of Allah’s neck, and the cloak’s collar had left marks from how roughly he snatched it. Then, he said, ‘O Muhammad, order them that I be given from the wealth of Allah that you have!’ The Messenger of Allah turned to him, smiled, and then ordered that he be given something.”- Collected by al-Bukhari (3149) and Muslim (1057)

He wants to test us by His Gifts. Some will Fail to Own Up and some will Triumph. The important thing is to not exclude sects of Muslims based on Prejudice.

    Firs saw the title, I thing what he mean the orthodox Islam is the "puritan" Islam, like so called salafi, because I often herd that they claim that they manhaj is the most orthodox way of Islam. This lecture give me the whole paradigm of sufisme, tasawwafa, and entire landscape of islamic growth until nowadays. I think the most of problem in modern Islam is we lack of tasawwuf practice, or acknowledging the importance of tasawwuf, or whatever shape and name of tasawwuf.

    Tasawuf is a path which even the prophet SAW followed its a path of purity and desiring only the pleasure of Allah SWT nothing else. A famous saying by a shaykh is tasawuf was a path without a name. many righteous imams of this ummah attest to the permissibility of this path and praise it. I recommend you read what imam Shafii RA And Sufyan AThawri RA said regarding tasawuf. It is a science among Ahlul Sunna Wal Jammah. unfortunately many propaganda has been hurled at this blessed path by Pseudo Salafi Wahhabis najdis and modern day Khawarij who hold no weight in our religion. there is a difference between zuhd and tasawuf the path of zuhd is to abstain from the world for various reasons whether reward, Janna etc whilst tasawuf or sufism is purely the science of attaining the pleasure and oneness of Allah SWT. A beautiful poem to this effect is by Rabiah of Basra RA. Furthermore do not mind the insults and agenda to destroy spirituality/tasawuf from my deen by many hypocritical deviant so called muslims and orientalists etc. I truly recommend you to read a book entitled Kashful Mahjub Allah Willing it will clear your mind from the cloud it has acquired from this baseless propaganda which labels everything without knowledge as BIDAH. Furthermore to clear your mind in regards to who Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jammah are then they are the majority as the Prophet SAW said Allah will never let the majority of his ummah agree to misguidance. In terms of Belief then they are upon the aqeeda of the asharis and maturidis. in terms of Fiqh then they follow the four established schools of thought, the hanafis, Malikis. shafiis, and hanbalis. and in terms of tasawuf then they are upon the path of Junayd Baghdadi RA and every Sufi tariqah must trace their silsila to him.

      trix514 I'm feel where you're coming from as I'm also a revert of 14 years now. My sincere advice to you is first and foremost always ask Allah to guide you to the right understanding of Islam. Secondly, stick to the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah for Allah's guidance and thirdly, reject the words of men that contradict the revelation of Allah, no matter how big a 'scholar' they might be. And always ask Allah to keep your heart firm upon the truth after He has guided it. Allah is not an oppressor, He will guide those of us who are sincere, but all of these sects are part of the test of Allah to test our sincerity. May Allah guide us all the truth.

      I would also recommend Sayyid Hussain Nasr who often puts things in a very good perspective. I converted to Islam in 1998. There will always be struggles. Sunni muslims put a big emphasis on the scholars who follow the opinion of a large consensus among them. It is something agreed upon by people who devoted years of their life to study. Salafis by pass this need to study and say that you do not even need a scholar. Things are clear, just open the Quran and read the hadith and you will be rightly guided. They have a very literal point of view and their ideology have been the crutch of modern day extremist. You and I can read many of the same books, but because we are different we will always conclude differently. Ideas will be constantly based on our own subjective experiences. This is why we follow a consensus of scholars who follow the Quran and sunnah and those rightly guided such as the companions of Muhammad SAW. Anyways, it is not black & white. Please continue to study and seek. salams.

      It's very easy to decide and chose :
      1- If you believe that apostates should be killed , as well as heretics , homosexuals , and want to stone women , Jizyah , forcing non Muslim women to inherit nothing from their dead Muslim husbands , you are ok with Takfir , Blasphemy laws , you prefer spiritually dead dogmas over common sense , if you prefer stone hearted doctrines over being a Human , THEN you are Salafist , Deobandi .
      2- If you believe in all of the above yet adds " shrine " visitations and Mevlid Celebrations to the above Menu , THEN you are Sunni Ash'ari , Maturidi , Barelvi .
      3- If you reject all of the above with the exception of shrine visitations and Mevlid Celebration then you are most likely Sufi .
      If you believe in religious tolerance , pluralism , heart filled love and tolerance over dead dogmas , direct Gnostic experience with God instead of stone hearted Fiqh , you are ready to gamble everything including every Fiqh Rule and Fatwa for Love , if you believe that Quran and Hadith should be Intrepretated in an esoteric/Batini meanings instead of it's Zahiri Meaning , if you believe that religion is love and love is the religion so everything in the religion must be inline with Love since God is love , the prophet PBUH is Love , THEN you are definitely Sufi , Welcome my friend .

    Thanks Mr. Abdul Hakeem Murad Sb for your scholarly lecture, which was very touching indeed., as I cautiously listened your lecture of one and a half hour on Sunni Islam and Tasawuf, too, though this video is very much short (lesser than 10 minutes). With regard to Shi'ism, you have not touched effectively the doctrine and expressed not in deeper manner. Was it really the political motive of the Shi'a regarding the succession to the Holy Prophet of Mawla Ali? Man kuntum Mawlahu fa hadha Ali Mawla!!! Was this a political announcement of the Holy Prophet at Arafat when he held the hand of Imam Ali and announced his Imamat among a hundred thousand pilgrims? If Islam is for knowledge, why do we hesitate to tell such truth to the world and humanity? The critical bottomline of difference between the Shi'a as supporter of Ali (on Imamat) and the opposite forces or rivals on the other who were in the latteer phases of history termed as Sunni. Wasn't it so? You've then also kindly described about the Isma'ilis in a very shallow manner. Either you've intentionally skipped to share about the realities pertaining to them and their Imam (Shah Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV as the 49 hereditary Imam descending directly from the lineage of the Holy Imam Ali through Imam Isma'il to the Fatimid Imams to the the Nizari Imams to the recent Imams in the 18th and 19th centuries titled by Iranian King as "Agha Khan" including Imam Shah Hassan Ali Shah Aga Khan-I, Imam Shah Ali Shah Aga Khan- II, Imam Shah Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan-III or famously known in the Indian Sub-continent as Sir Aga Khan; and the present or Hadhir/Hazir Imam Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan-Iv). Would be grateful to you to b more open in exploring and sharing about them in a realistic manner, particularly the Shi'i Isma'ili doctrine and philosophy. It's my conviction that it will intensify your knowledge to the crest and zest within this world if you take an unbiased approach if you believe in the Holy Prophet as the "city of knowledge and Ali as the door of knowledge. It's wise to follow the door and enter in the city of knowledge and not to enter in the wisdom from unlawful ways. I was so shocked to hear that your knowledge informed the audience about His Highness the Aga Khan as a personality having banking interest and a wealthy man? Isn't it a pity for such poor knowledge about him? and kept aside his humanitarian context and the spiritual leader as the Hadhir/Hazir Imam of his community of over 15-20 million (not 3 or four only). The presence of Ismailis you identified within India and Badakhshan, but we need to know that they have a sigfnicant presence in Pakistan, China, countries of East Asia, central Asia, middle East, Africa, Arabian countries and Europe plus North America. They are thus a global community. Hope you'd come up with your next lecture purely on the Shi'a Ismailis as a liberal Muslim, particularly if you are a Sufi and a Sufi could be a Sufi if s/he had a didar (sight) of Imam Ali, the first Imam of the whole Shi'a Muslims. You nicely and with a pride talked about Hazrat Jalal Uddin Balkhi/ Rumi the Great, I wish you have also highlight at least about his Murshid/Guru, Hazrat Shms-e Tabrizi the Great as the latter was a highly elevated Ismaili Da'i and Pir (who stood to be Fana fillah; while Rumi was fana fil Sheikh). similarly, the other celebrated Shia Ismaili Pirs were Shams Sabzwari of Multan in today's Pakistan, Hazrat Nasir Khusraw Qabodiyoni (Hujjat off Khurasan and Badakhshan during the time of the Fatimid Empire lasted for over two hundred years, Al-Muyid fiddin Shirazi, Al-Sajjistani and many more. If you are based in London, you certainly would be aware of the Insitute of Ismaili Studies and Institude for the Study of Muslim Civilizations (ISMC) in London where the related scholars from across the globe have their scholarly interaction together. My apology for taking your time and patience and sorry for any point that disheartened you or if I've become somewhere unpolite. If you got time, I'd invite you to visit my website www.fazalamin.com which is though yet under its development phase. Wassalam and kind regards

    The reason Allah says poets are strayed off the path and misguided and only atrayers and misguided like Sufis, Aaref and those who follow those poets they follow them because, they Do Not have any Instructions as to how to save themselves and go back to the heaven. They calla themselves “Aashegh” which is not even in the Arabic Quran because the word “Love” is only the Desire and Wishes of the Soul, and that is why we are dropped down on earth only because we followed from the desire of our own Soul.

      Imam Al-Shafi'i was a poet and is one of the greatest jurists in the history of Islam. He was acknowledged by Imam Maliki for being forthright and intelligent. The man was also humble, saying that there were two things he was good at; archery and fiqh, but admitted that he was better at archery although people said that he was better with the latter.
      Hadith:
      Narrated 'Abdullah: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Indeed there is wisdom in (some) poetry."
      Ubayy b. Ka’b reported the Prophet (May peace be upon him) as saying : In poetry there is wisdom.
      Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: A desert Arab came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and began to speak. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: In eloquence there is magic and in poetry there is wisdom.

      That's right. The Pope could act as a sort of referee when serious doctrinal disputes cannot be resolved by the bishops. This preserves unity & clarity within the church. However, only twice in modern history has a pope infallibly defined church doctrine. Both were about Mary the mother of Jesus, and neither were contoversial. The Catholic system works extremely well, which is why Hamza Yusuf wishes Islam had something like it.

      I have a great deal of respect for Hamza Yusuf. I hope he becomes the standard for Muslims in the West. Pope Francis is also quite wonderful, but none of his public statements are infallible. Rather, they open the floor to dissenting voices & constructive debate on the issues he cares about, which is what he wants.

      mcmemmo according to wikipedia: Papal infallibility is a dogma of the Catholic Church that states that, in virtue of the promise of Jesus to Peter, the Pope is preserved from the possibility of error "when, in the exercise of his office as shepherd and teacher of all Christians, in virtue of his supreme apostolic authority, he defines a doctrine concerning faith or morals to be held by the whole Church."[1][2]
      - this comes from in the bible when isa (pubs) supposedly says to peter"i give unto you the keys of the kingdom and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" - meaning when you make a rule on earth, it becomes a rule in heaven - so in dogmatic, rather than pragmatic terms the pope is officially infallible

    When he says “Hanbalis” as one of the schools of theology, he is wrong. The True Hanbalis have the exact same theology as the Asha’ri and Maa’turidi schools. The so-called Salafi movement today do not follow Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal.

    modern sufism is full of religious innovations, kufr and shirk. the real tasawwuf is in tazkiyyatun-nafs, being a zaahid, turning away from the love of this world, but still fulfilling the rights the creation, your family, kids, wife, has upon you. there is no monk class in Islam. in fact the monks of the time of rasulullah (sallalahu aleihi wa sallam) were rejected.

    I Watched about 40 mins of the video. And I feel that its inescapable that "Sufism" or "Heterodoxy" Produced "Orthodoxy." Orthodoxy can not produce Heterodoxy. Example: All the prophets call to Prophethood is brought about by a Mysterious Encounter with a Virtuous Person (An Angel). (quran 53:1-18) This Virtuous person is actually God. To embrace Sufism is Embrace the Belief that Mere Man is in fact God. He kinda lost me on Asceticism. Example: quran 3:14&15. I Believe that there is a misunderstanding about what it means to be "in the World and not of it." Is it not Hyprocrisy to have all the things that Worldly People Worship and Praise (quran 3:14) and Yet claim to be Above such things? Imma watch the rest of the video. Peace.

      How on earth did you come to the conclusion that 'man is God'? I think you heard what you wanted to hear! Also, asceticism is very much part of the Sufi tradition. You can have nice things but it's much harder to reach the spiritual heights,and it's delusional to think you can live in splendour and it not affect you!

      Look yo. It's a Fuckin shame that I got to tell a grown ass man in 2016 that the Bible and the Quran both teach that man is God. Psalms 82. John 10:33-36. Quran 15:29. Its that white people Bullshit. But I ain't dick riding nobody. I know the value of the Gifts I enjoy. In a fucked up World. Peace.

      nowhere in the Quran does it say msn is God! The oneness of God is the whole point of the religion!

    • @a-rabarmpits330
      @a-rabarmpits330 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does not the Quran say: 2:29 oh shit! lol. I mean 15:30 "when I have fashioned him (adaam) (in due proportion) and breathed into him of MY SPIRIT, you fall down in obeisance to him (nevermind ME for the time being)?" And from 2:30 Behold Your Lord said to the Angels: "I Will create a Khaleefah (Successor) on Earth."...... A Khaleefah is a successor. A Successor is only for People who Die. (Mortals) Point Blank. Some scholars translate it as "VICEGERENT" U Know Like a Vice President. Let's be Real. a Vice president Becomes heir to the Office if the President Dies Unexpectedly. U Claim to have read the Quran? Ok Is the Above not True? Or should we go Deeper? Allah says later in 2:30 (that the Angels Questioned his command) they said: "Will you place therein one who will make mischief therein and shed blood? - while we do celebrate your praises and glorify your holy (name)? HE (Allah ta ala) said: "I Know What You Know Not" (in other words, It might appear that way on the surface, but Man, those Few of them who believe and Follow my Guidance, will turn out to be Higher than Even the Highest Creatures Imaginable: the Angels). As anybody who knows Surah al Baqarah can admit that Adaam (they) Proved Their Mettle, and the All the Angels Agreed (Submitted). It Was only IBLIS (an Angel?)who Denied Adaam his Rightful Place. He refused to Accept the Fact that Adaam (mankind) Proved in Front of Everybody that He (they) were superior by Knowing Not Only the Names (True Nature) of the Celestial Realm of Angelic Beings in the Highest Heavens but he also had a thorough Knowledge of Earthly Things Too. And this is why the Angels originally Questioned Allah's Judgment and they were Suspicious, if Allah was actually Right in Doing this. (Creating Mortals who fight and kill each other) IBLIS held Against Adaam the Fact that he was Flesh and Blood (mere humans). He Became Jealous When the Facts Came Out and Vindicated Adaam the creation of Allah ta ala. By Disbelieving IBLIS showed his Inferiority Instead of any legitimate Merits about his Disagreement. I'll stop right there.

      Those ayahs do not mean Allah made mini-gods! Try reading it in its original Arabic,and what the early scholars say! If you're saying there are 'gods' alongside Allah, then that can take you out of Islam, as tawheed is the basis for the whole religion! I can only assume you're NOI or a Five Percenter ; If I'm correct in that then tjis conversation us pointless!

    The problem is when you start to introduce these ugly things in the guise of Sufism. Music here on this video for example.
    As someone who is attached to the path of tazkiyah/tasawuf at least in my desire for it, I have to ask myself, if many of those claiming to practice tasawuf are so concerned about Ihsan (excellence) in Deen, why are those matters which are doubtful not left alone for those that are not? (Ie. Why not leave alone music out of scrupulousness if not the conviction it is haraam?)
    You then have to ask yourself, how many who claim to practice tasaweuf are actually practicing a path of shahwa instead.

    A true believer follows straight path from Quran only, all other paths are crooked , Sufi, Sunni, Shia, or Wahabi, Fear God and remember the Last Day, this's easiest way to seek God, there scholars are charismatic speakers and lure people in, but in reality they're deceiving themselves.

    • @dunepepe6199
      @dunepepe6199 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      overly intellectual? some of the greatest sufi shaykhs were also some of the greatest "intellectuals" of their time Sufism is not a rejection of knowlegde it is a quest for purity and closeness to Allah sufis are not hippies who act purely on emotion Sufis are those that use knowledge they have gained to better understand their Lord and themselves sufism may stress on tasawwuf but we are muslim and we thus follow fiqh as well surely the art and sciences brought about by earlier muslin scholars can not be ignored this shaykh has gained knowledge in the pursuit of his Lord In-fact it is the duty of a Muslim to continually seek knowledge

    • @wwondertwin
      @wwondertwin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      M7CVZ It is a Wahhabi fallacy to say that Tasawwuf is anti-intellectual. Almost every great scholar from most of the schools of thought was also a Sufi. It's exceptional when someone was not. Al-Azhar University is strongly Sufi, too.
      If you remove Tasawwuf from Islam you will inevitably end up with ISIS. It's the logical conclusion. Devoid of truly understanding why they do all the rituals that they do, devoid of actual spirituality, devoid of even trying to understand the intentions of the Prophet Muhammad. Just blindly imitating what they read in books from which they have removed all historical context, and assigning values of their own to the now-empty and contextless rituals. Tasawwuf aims to keep the Self under control, because the Self is proud and arrogant and destructive in its desires, and will stop at nothing in its quest to rationalise and excuse its depravity.

  • @4peace520
    @4peace520 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Sufism and Tasawaff is anything but Islam, they have mixed up polytheistic beliefs which came from Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish mysticism. specially concept of God. Islam means Submission to One God, no one can reach God without the Monotheistic belief of it's Purest Form, known as Ikhlas in Quran.
    Sufi Masters tell their followers that they got some secret knowledge which is not in Quran but passed on to them through their Sheikhs and forefathers, they are given some special privileges that makes them close to Divine, they're favorite of Allah, known as Wali-Allah, some of them even think they are reincarnation as God, naUzbillah, astaghfirulAllah
    Quran teaches us a straight and easy path, on other hand Sufis Masters teaches their followers crooked and steep path. They talk only about love and beloved where as Quran teaches us Submission and Fear of Allah SWT, they tell fabricated and fake miracle and stories of their forefathers and sheikhs, where as Quran clearly says miracles were given to Prophets only, they form their own groups and cults and their own beliefs and practices which are not from Quran. They use differs titles around the world, in west they are known as Sufi Masters, in subcontinent Indian and Pakistan, they are called pir, and in Arabia they're considered Skeikhs. Only those Muslims who don't know Quran will join Sufism. Peace!
