Man - some of my worst experiences with fans in concerts.
1. Lamb of god in London - I was sitting due to a back injury from the gym, and had the misfortune of sitting next to a loud couple where the wife was grinding her other half seated down so all I could see was the grinding and less of the gig.
2. Pantera in Amsterdam - recently, was the subject of racist abuse by a bunch of skinheads.
3. Korn in Rotterdam 2002 - a dude kept smashing my friends head in the pit for no reason. He wasn’t even part of the pit, this guy kept throwing punches around
4. Rancid in London, 2008 - full on brawl due to a bunch of skinheads who were abusing us and made the mistake of fighting my much bigger friend who knows Kung fu. Got pulverised but my friend was acquitted through cctv cameras which showed the skinheads threw the first punch and we merely reacted - with full force

the most fragrant show i ever attended was a Subhumans show. best circle pit i've ever been in. such a blast. the smell was INCREDIBLE.
Literally, my first show ever was slipknot, and there was a dude just standing in the middle of the crowd in an indoor arena pissing. I got shoved into a girl who hit me in the face. Good show though. The chaos adds flavor.
The only show etiquette is when someone falls in the pit, you pick them up.

2- protect the small people
3- don’t grope people in the pit
4- don’t throw your drink
5- if you give out disrespect, expect to receive it back double
5- worry more about yourself more than others
6- if you make yourself the center of attention, don’t expect that attention to be positive.
So it is written, so it is done
But drinks are always thrown

Being 40, I still love getting up by the front, but I'm over getting drinks thrown all around the venue. I just want to get back in my car sticky and smelling like stale beer any more.
@@MileHighGrowler yep, I’m 39 and basically feel the same. I’ll still jump in the pit and I don’t mind getting covered in sweat (it’s unavoidable) but driving home in beer soaked clothes because some idiot decided to lob the second half of their 8 dollar domestic… nah.

At an Attila show some dude was punching some poor fella that stood outside of the moshpit. Suddenly like 5 dudes pile on top of that mofo and beats the crap out of him,. Then as they're dragging him out, one guys says "No, no it's cool, this twat was punching some kid for no reason!" - followed with a thumbs up.
The complexity of show etiquette: Enjoy the show, and let others enjoy the show their own way.

At a local show in Texas, saw this kid stage dive and face plant the concrete as everyone cleared away to avoid catching him. He got up, proceeded to climb on stage, and repeat the process 2 more times. Everyone parted like the fucking seas on each jump. Felt like a time loop or some shit
No finn, no butt-stuff at shows, that poop slinging went away when gg alin passed away.
I saw Bodybox a few weeks back and it looked like a lot of kids first show. One kid was livestreaming the show right in front. He then decided to throw the remainder of his drink into the crowd behind him and then just start punching people near him. He was quickly escorted out. There's a line between dancing too aggressively and "the PCP is kicking in!!"
You make an important distinction between what's expected at a hardcore/metal show and what's to be expected at a pop or jazz show.
Jazz show frontman seductively into the mic: "Alright I want to thank everyone for coming out to hear Intimate Moments from a Tuscan Sunset. Now what I'd like is to split the crowd right down the middle and on my count lets have everyone charge at eachother. A-one, a-two, a-one-two-three-go"

I was at a Social Distortion show in the mid 90s with a buddy and he was crowd surfing with a beer in his hand. That buddy then decided to throw said beer at Mike Ness, covering him in bud light. Ness stopped the show and threatened to kick my fiends ass and then had him thrown out. I guess Mike Ness was ahead of the curve on show etiquette.
My only real obnoxious concert story, my wife and I went and saw Aaron Lewis pre-country genre switch and pre-MAGA talk. He was touring solo and it was an acoustic concert. Him doing covers and Staind songs. Two rows up for a solid 30 minutes it felt like, this women continued to scream “Play Black” over and over and over NON STOP. She was SUPER trashed. Eventually Aaron stopped the show and told her to shut the fuck up and he’ll play what he wants. They end up kicking her out, she threw up and left her purse. Rough night for her 😂. And then immediately after they kicked her out, he played Black. 😂
Best way I've ever heard this explained is that pit etiquette is just about awareness of your surroundings and of your weight class. Don't go for someone who you could put in the hospital, don't go for someone who could put you in the hospital. No one should be incurring medical debt because they went to see Bane.
No one should be going to a Bane show in the first place.
to be fair, I got spinkicked in the face at a Living Sacrifice show when I was 14. the dude who did it was like three times my size, at least. that was a hardcore show, though, so I knew it was a risk. dude felt so bad right after though and kept apologizing to me. I was like "bro it's okay let's fucking go!". it was totally on accident. just collateral damage. long story short, best dentist visit of my life lol
Saw Bane at Boston Roadrunner 6/18 this year, easily one of the best shows I've been to. They built stage extensions to be further out into the floor, specifically to not have a barricade. Spent most of it catching stagedivers or stagediving myself to worry about rules lol. As lawless as it was, there was still respect, and security only stepped in when there was an actual problem. Some kid early in the set visibly got messed up on stage left, I think broke his arm or something. There's a great video of the show from the stage, and that kid pointed himself out in the comments and said he had an amazing time even though he went to the hospital after like 3 songs lol

Hardcore shows, sure yeah do whatever you want, but at any concert it’s pretty easy to read a room and figure out the etiquette

I saw someone launch a 1L aquafina bottle at the piccolo player from Flogging Molly and hit her right in the belly, she didnt even flinch. Conversely, I threw a bag of weed on the stage at a Down show and Phil stopped the show to thank me and roll it up.

I think Finn, being above average height, doesn't get that every inch of something obstructing the view of the stage in front of us short kings/queens can have a HUGE impact on how much we enjoy the show. If it was one person raising their arms multiple feet above their head with a lit up screen in their hands, then ok ya we'd just move. It's dozens and dozens, if not hundreds of people doing that simultaneously though. It's a big deal tall boy.
Being short is supposed to be a equitable thing not just acceptance you will never enjoy your life. "NO everyone over 6 feet must be at the front and waving their phones because of Darwinism SORRY" that isn't what fucking 7000 years of human evolution brought us to.
I typically move by people to get a spot lol but I'm Goth so etiquette is different, more chill mellow at Goth shows. I couldn't deal with going to a Hardcore show especially at my age (37), fuckers gonna trigger my PTSD and have me hit them. Age makes you less tolerant to bullshit. Definitely if they hit a woman or someone minding their business.
I thought a lot about this recently - I'm taller than many people, and I still have a hard time seeing usually. Last couple events I attended I tried crouching down half a foot to see what it looks like for everyone else, and I don't think they could see anything. I guess you can still hear a performance...I don't know how anyone deals with it. Does not seem like fun.

@@SuperRat420 I try really hard to stay out of the way...I'm usually at the back anyways. A few weeks ago there was a guy at least my height wearing a knit cap sticking up above his head like he was trying to cover as much height as possible. I don't get why you would do that.
Yeah, crust punks are another level. Saw an Amebix reunion show in a basement and the stench of the audience (many of whom had not changed their clothes or washed since 1987) was so bad I had to regularly exit for fresh air.
There was also a very drunk dwarf punching strangers on their legs. Very awkward as nobody wanted to hit him back. He passed out and security scooped him up and dragged his little body out. Great show.

I gotta respectfully disagree about the phones. Here in Japan, phones aren't allowed at most shows for Japanese artists, whereas western artists (who come here) will usually allow them. I never noticed how annoying they were until I went without seeing them for so long.
Shows should be threatening, but not by security. Finn needs to cover the recent Fete Music Hall brawl with security and the crowd/ band.

My biggest issues are, I like the stage area to be the most active and the back to be kind of chill. I need a place to go to enjoy my drink. When someone in the very back starts dancing aggressively next to me I’m like, why right here though. And my second issue is sexual assault, there should be zero tolerance for it.

The crappiest audience experience I had was at a show, we were talking a bit, not a lot, mostly between songs. The kids in front of us were taking selfies the entire time, with flash, and complaning that we didnt move when taking selfies and complaning about us talking between songs. And I just laughed at how lame they were.

I love to record my favorite songs from the bands I see, and yes I rewatch to relive the experience. My biggest gripe with people recording is when they hold the phone up above their head and blocking other people’s view. Hold that shit under your eyes and be courteous of others experience.
No offense but I’m 5’2 so if I hold my phone up under my eyes I’m going to record the person in front of me’s back. I usually only record my favorite 2-3 songs during a show so I’m not in anyone’s way for too long.
I go to a couple shows a year and I don't get the record the whole show. Live in the moment and if you're behind a phone the entire show, you're not really there.
I record a little bit but not all of it. When I was up front at the barricades I never pulled the phone out, it was actually off.

Im mainly talking about when people like 5’11 and up fully extend their arms to get above the crowd and block peoples view for a prolonged period. Im 6’5 and am already self conscious about blocking people. If it’s not a band I love, I try be in the back and out of the way
@@nola281 I try and record with the phone under my eyes and mainly by my mouth or lower so I can focus on the show in the moment and get to relive it later on. I know people hate when others record so I try and do it as polite as possible

There's a difference between trying to be respectful of others and just not caring about the other people.
There was this young girl who when my daughter and I were in the pit at Shinedown who was recording the whole time, taking selfies and she kept getting in way of my smaller than her daughter. Finally her mother told her to stop but she was not cool. With how much tickets and everything else costs, I can't understand why you would even want to spend the whole show behind a screen.
When you’re not in the pit, do not shove people who do not want to be in the pit, like you are in the pit
It depends entirely what type of show you're attending. I expext mosh pits at a metal show. Not at a seated show. At seated shows, sometimes you can't not pay attention to someone's phone. Especially if you're sitting next to them and they're not recording but texting the whole time.
Show etiquette - don't be an asshole. Same etiquette as elsewhere. Same people disregarding etiquette everywhere. They're usually easily spotted and avoided.
Personally I've always preferred recorded music to being jostled around in a crowd or wandering through fields of garbage at a festival, but that's just me. I've been to a few that were really fun.
I agree 1000% with banning phones at shows
A lot of these I would agree with for some arena show's I've been to. Saw Tears for Fears recently. Full of middle aged women:
- Talking loudly during the concert to the point I can't hear the fucking music over Karen
- Getting drunk and sloppy off overpriced wine
- Filming the whole thing and just puttering with the phone which gets in other people's space.
I saw Drake (as a chaperone) and the whole concert were iPhones and people dancing and filming themselves (and me and everyone around them). Shit was annoying as fuck and distracting. I swear, shithouse wasted metal heads can be obnoxious, but in the end, they actually just wanna hear bands, not do all this extra sloppy shit.

Yeah i frequent a lot of jam band shows and the talking is insane. Im there to listen to the jams people! Metal and hardcore shows the music is plenty loud enough to drown out most of the obnoxious talkers. But for a jam band, or like when i saw Explosions in the sky (a chill instrumental band) the talking is a huge problem that really does effect everyone elses enjoyment of the music. If you just wanna talk go sit at the bar in the back. Let us on the floor or in our seats actually immerse ourselves in the music we paid to hear.
My favourite festivals are in Japan because they are safe. Everyone has a great time. Every time a band/ artist comes and tries to bring “chaos” to the crowd fails miserably and I love it.
That Pitboss2000 story was amazing… I remember in the early 2000s, tough bands would play and the pit would get so violent you could hear screams of fear over the music, such a fun moment
The Don’t Dance one threw me for a loop, especially as someone who has been to their fair share of punk, metal, and country shows. Dancing in some fashion is pretty much the expectation!

I'll never forget the mudvayne show I went to in 2003. This dude was going around punching people in the face, women included, so my boyfriends brother grabbed him by the throat and choke slammed him like the undertaker 😂 he wasn't punching people after that
up until covid I was photographing a heap of shows and I believe photographers should never be seen so I always keep low so people don't see me. My best photos are when the crowd are smashing me because you are feeling the show so the photos replicate that. Love crazy shows
This video is a good sum up of why I gave up on metal shows long ago. Having miserable, smelly, poorly educated drunk losers who couldn't make it though highschool surfing on my head isn't my idea of fun anymore. Give me my goth/ebm events with gentle, respectful, tolerant people who are there to enjoy the music and not act like degenerate Neanderthals.
I don't notice people with their phones out at shows most of the time, but the second you become aware of it it is striking just how many people have them up at a time. It's like when you're watching TV and halfway through a show you become hyper aware of the TV bezels and everything in the background. I don't really care or hold it against people though.
For most of these things, it's so genre dependent that any catch-all guide is gonna be ridiculous. Don't crowdkill at a Steely Dan show.
On the topic of "bad" crowd behavior and your nu-metal video trend, you should do a review of the Netflix Woodstock documentary. I found it to be way better than the HBO one. You'd have fun with the out of touch former hippy promoters.

That one seemed a little weird to me, I dont consider the shows I go to as being anything uber crazy, mostly 90's skate punk adjacent type stuff... but I dont even bring my glasses into the venue, and anyone getting too ambitious with their phone is likely going to find it on the floor in a million little pieces afterwards. What sort of metal shows are people attending where you can actually record an entire show?
From what I’ve heard Ghost only banned phones for one show and it was because they were doing a concert movie and everyone going was aware I think
I used to know a guy in my local scene that would intentionally projectile vomit in the pit. Really nice guy.
Some of these rules might be fine if you're going to see something calm (jazz, folk, piano-ballad type stuff, etc.) but most of this just makes me think "if you really don't want this to happen, just don't go"
I understand the question. A lot of people struggle to be good audience members because we spend less time interacting in general.
1. Phones - the phone is to be used for recording/sharing/tagging. Not for making calls/texting/playing games/etc. if you want to use the phone for that, is it in an area away from the stage.
2. Talking - cheer for the artists. Don’t have your side conversations on a level that distracts or disturbs the performer.
3. Respect other people’s space. If you in a mosh pit, then fine. Outside of that, respect personal space.
4. Give the act a chance. Don’t show up with preconceived notions
Tbf the talking isnt about the performer. Most of them use in ears anyway and cant hear anything. Its about ur fellow audience members who paid to hear the music.
Went to a Tool show recently at the Moda center with my partner and kids, there was a no phone/no recording policy and if security saw you using your phone they’d shine a BRIGHT AF flashlight directly at you and whoever is near you. Burnt my corneas.

Was at my friend´s gig in a German bar yesterday, and some old grandpa with a cane asked for a chair, sat in the front row and started screaming for schnaps and beer at everyone, he half groped the singer and started giving me an arm lock. He got baptized Papa Schnitzel by the singer and was taken home by staff member. 80 y.o. a-hole move, we all had fun tho.
I have a tendency to sing too loudly. I have been a lead singer so it is typically in tune and matching the vocal style. I also get too excited about deep cuts the band plays and no one around me knows the songs. A7X did a lot of the latest album this year and I knew all the words. I just get excited at shows.

I’m a 52 year old woman, and I have a “bingo card” when I go to shows. It doesn’t feel like a show unless I get to check off seeing “things” happen, like fights, an random acts of nudity.

I pretty much expect a drink to be spilled on me at every show. Recently saw WVH/Pantera/Metallica and right as Pantera comes on, a pit starts in front of us and my cousin's fresh beer goes everywhere. These kind of risks come with the territory IMO.
If I'm not covered in someone else's beer and sweat, as well as sporting at least one swollen testicle by the end, then I likely didnt enjoy the show very much.

I almost never have my phone out anymore. I'm early GenZ. Having your phones out gets dangerous when they do it in moshpits and don't pick people up when they fall anymore. Just to get the TikTok. I heard from friends who Bad Omens that this was a thing. There were people being stumped over
I once had a girl yell at me for singing along because she wanted to record a video at a Neck Deep show. That was last year lmao 💀

German show etiquette is strange, though. Went to see Slayer in Leipzig on their farewell tour. Had a blast, crowd surfed to the front of the stage and then, when trying to get back to the pit I needed to step in front of people to get there and these people was so protective of their spot that some even tried to fight me when I passed in front of them. Never experienced that from metal fans before…
I saw Dark Funeral live in 1995 and all these guys wearing huge sombreros really annoyed me, good rule to ban them!
Call me a boomer at the age of 20. But I saw Sleep token last month and it was by far the most disrespectful crowd of people I've ever dealt with while being on the floor at a show.

The biggest thing for me about the phone thing is that I think that trying to capture every moment is gonna prevent you from being actually present in it.
Also, I have a huge scar across my right eyebrow from getting hit with a guitar (from the stage) while moshing in front of the stage lmao
Blocking the view of other people by holding up your phone is a great way to end up with a broken phone.
I remember getting covered in bruises, beer, blood, and puke at shows. I don't miss it, but I'm even older than Finn.
I turned 58 last September. I remember when shows smelled like vomit and sweat.

So my buddy Jimmy hadn't been to a gig in 25 or so years, doing the family thing etc. He shows up with his son, bunch of old schoolers in our group. Everyone's hammered and having a great time. Jimmy , must have thought he was transported back to 1983 or something because when Jack G called their last song Jimmy snuck up on stage and right when the song started Jimmy runs out onto the stage and does a classic flip dive into the crowd. The same crowd that was there a few seconds ago but had started into the circle pit, so there was nobody to catch ol Jimmy when gravity kicked in and Jimmy smacked the shit out of his noggin and had to go to the ER. We all laugh about it now but there's a lesson to be learned in every story 😏😝.
We go back in time a few years , TSOL again. So I'm there with my friends ( when I was younger I was all about Boots n Braces, now I'm all about orthopedic shoes and a belt ) bands great, pit is great, awesome show ! Everyone knows Code Blue is my favorite TSOL song, and when that song came on I was holding and pumping my fist, I see my buddy Norton come round the pit and he grabs my arm and pulls me in,I'm like NooOoOo... fuck it , I thought ... I can still do this! I make it about 3/4 of the round the pit and trip and fall hard like a sack of wet grapes, which in turn causes a traffic jam, more people are falling, a guy tries to pick me up, but that's no easy task and two more come to my rescue , the pits still active though , im really trying to stand up but keep getting knocked into, those three guys finally got me up and out of the way, kids are giving me a wtf grandpa kind of look, geez. The funny part is another buddy said when those guys were trying to get me up it looked like the Iwo Jima memorial, with me being the flag.

Playing in a show that wouldn't help out on a story and holding up to the phone device during the show of keeping in a safe place at home.
Basically don't have fun at shows.
There was a glorified local band asking for requests to their fans so my mate walked up enthusiastically, so the lead singer leaned in, and politely said "play something competently".
They all started getting aggressive and he walked off laughing.
It's hard to ignore the people holding up phones when everyone does it but Finn again showing the kids he's cool, he gets it.
There was that NOFX song “Separation of Church and Skate” where Fat Mike ironically says “Make every show a matinee!” And honestly, I would love a library matinee hardcore show. Get me in bed by 10pm.

My dumb college roommate wore sandals to a show and tried to crowd surf. The crowd immediately took his sandals and threw them where he couldn't find them. It was the greatest moment ever!
Recently went to a big festival and the headliner is somewhat of a national treasure since 40 years. And i shit you not, i was the single one animation dudette, waving, jumping singing , while everyone else just stood there nodding their heads at max. Felt like an idiot but their indifference made me go all in. I want more idiots like me at shows.
I go to maybe a half dozen shows a year in Denver. I will say that city is the best for people not having phones out the whole time. Occasional pic or clip, but I see shows in other cities and everyone has their phone out. I don't care if you take your phone out, but I think the show energy is so much better when people are fully present and invested. Taking the phone out just takes you out of it in my opinion. Mad props to the Denver attendees for selling out shows and being hyped and just living in the moment.
End of the day, it's just being respectful with any of the "rules." Get drunk, dance, mosh, sing along, have a great time. Just shitty to do it at the expense of other people. Don't care the genre, just no reason to ruin someone else's night.
My only problem with cell phones is people aren't paying attention to crowd surfers. I have seen people dropped at 2 different shows now because people weren't paying attention. That didn't happen in the 90's

I don't know Finn I have to disagree about people talking loudly. I have had multiple blabber mouths next to me during intimate shows who ramble on about nonsense and gossip like they're in a bar and it's incredibly annoying. If their conversations are louder than the band on stage and I can't focus on the music, I am saying something. It's my biggest pet peeve at concerts. If you don't care about what's on stage and aren't paying attention to the music, than don't be annoying around others who are trying to listen!

Re: not talking at shows - the problem is not the talkers; it's that a 'rock' show nowadays means guitar players play through computers and not loud cabs, and drummers play an electronic drum set, because the club owner wanted rock music but at volume no higher than slightly loud TV, and the sound engineer's main job is to wrestle the band(s) into this requirement, so as not to disturb bar staff to sell booze (which leads to people getting too drunk and spilling on others, hint hint?). If there are electric guitars on stage, and a conversation drowns them out, the musicians need to turn up, period. If they can't, they need to gig at a different venue, that actually caters to rock, warts and all, and not acoustic folk or jazz.
Regarding the annoying, light-emitting phones being held in the air at shows...it's not that I care that somebody wants to hold up their phone like an idiot. But what moreso annoys the piss out of me is when I'm at a SEATED show, and I paid for an assigned seat....when one of those phone-tards holds up their phone directly in front of me...and I can't just simply move to another seat. So I have to sit through the entire show with a lit-up phone BLOCKING my view of the performance. Funk that.
I bought a seated ticket at a show (I was pregnant at the time) only to have the jerk in front of me stand the entire time. Man, I was livid. He wouldn’t sit down when I asked so I sat on the stairs for half the show.
Agree with everything you said. Girls getting groped in the pit/surfing is a big no, and the gropers should get beat for sure. Also when dudes feel like they need to overhead launch someone forward into the onto the heads of unsuspecting people in front of them is lame

Social Distortion at the Hollywood Palladium about 2010, My gf & I are on the floor right up close to the giant mosh pit that goes around & around in big circles. This kid crashes into us and looks up at me ready to fight ..... and then he goes 'oh, excuse me sir' .... and that's when I knew I was old

Went to see some acoustic show and got hammered and kept yelling at the guy to give me his guitar. It started with dirty looks from everyone around me and escalated to some random girl throwing her drink on me and cussing me out. Moral of the story, getting wasted at a show with chill vibes turns you into an asshole 100% of the time.

as someone who's latino and been to a lot of rock shows and urban act shows in NYC, rock shows are mostly super chill, the worst it gets is annoying girls on shoulders and brits and their flags blocking views, but at hip hop venues, your life is in question if you step on the wrong kicks
