Don't Spend a Fortune On Right Angle Clamping Blocks

- While working on another project I quickly experienced that age old problem that we woodworkers have...not enough clamps. Or in this case, clamp blocks. I needed some right-angle blocks for the box shape I am building. I did a quick search online and found that most of the tools for this start at about $35 and go up from there. So, I decided to make some. Here is the process that I finally settled on. Hope you enjoy!

Agree, not a huge concern, but I was more interested in seeing what you’re doing and hearing what you’re doing. Lights and audio are key.

I made some squares from scrap MDF and plywood. Mosty only 3/4" without the slot, but I have added some clamping holes later. I noticed you did cut the corner but didn't mention it in the video. Nothing worse than gluing your block to the inside corner.
Looked at a number of vids on corner clamps. THIS is the one I wanted. Quick, accurate, super sturdy, nice and thick for stability. "LIKED".
Great idea for these clamp blocks, & I love how you hoover up any dust , which is something I need to do.

I put the current ones in to brighten the shop but now the two lights are too bright and everything is just washed out. I'm looking at some of those 4' LED fixtures that can be daisy chained together. I think those will spread the light out better. Thoughts?
a nice accessory tool to have. One minor change I would make is to knock off the sharp corner where the two straight edges intersect. That would help avoid gluing the squares to the project accidentally. Otherwise a definite keeper project.
That is great advice. I actually did that to the finished product after I finished the video. You're right, it does help IMMENSELY when it comes to glue squeeze out 😁
That's a good idea. Tip: whenever you're worried glue might stick to clamps or cauls etc, stick some clear packing tape on them first. Guaranteed no stick. 😁
Years ago i bought a set of 4 aluminum 90* angles similar to your plywood ones. I paid $14. I recently saw them in a store and they were now priced at about $30 for 2. If i ever need more, I’ll definitely use your method.
It amazes me how expensive things get once they become "trendy". Don't get me wrong, I love to use good quality tools but manufacturers continue to price things beyond the average Joe's means. Thanks for your comment. I'm glad I was able to offer up a potential option for your future needs 😁
Cheap and super good... the can be used to put up support for shells too
Very true. I prefer floating shelves (hidden brackets) but these would absolutely work for that application.

@@istrysii Absolutely! Most of my shelves are decorative so they don't carry much weight. But if one wanted to store heavier items then these could most definitely double as shelf brackets.

Musics too loud mate
What a wonderful method for this tool.... Thank you for sharing it. However I have to tell you that it was hard for me to follow you as you have the most horrible music on the background also because it was very loud and does interfere with your presentation. Sorry for the criticism but I felt you need to know what the people that follow you thinks of your video so that perhaps you can improve its quality. All the best.

While I can't apologize for the song itself I will very much apologize for the volume, especially at about the 4:30 mark where it got so loud. Ditch the music, if you can call it that
Wouldn't they like all wood move depending on the humidity? I know that plywood is more stable......but not an exact thing like we woodworkers strive for. I guess thats why they build them out of metal.
That's a great question. I have had this particular set now for about seven months. I just checked them and they are just as square today as when I made them. I obviously can't speak to how they will hold up for years yet but so far so good.

Honestly, I thought it would add some interest to the video. In some aspects music does do that but here it is clearly a distraction.

...if you will continue to use your table saw this way you will loose some fingers - for sure!!!!!
Funny thing about TH-cam videos. Camera angles make it look like something is dangerous when it in fact is not. I appreciate your concern for my fingers but I assure you every cut I make is a calculated endeavor.

You simply are doing things wrong; at 40"+: 1. never cut a piece that short and that wide without a sliding jig; 2. the fence is installed wrong - it should end in such situations at the position of the blade. The way you use your table saw will lead to kickback at one point. That are the essential things one should learn before working with those tools. People see those videos on TH-cam and imitate what TH-camrs are doing because they seem to be experienced - and therefor such wrong use of tools are irresponsible here. Please let a professional carpenter show you how to do it the right way!!!
@@fiddleronthebike I will concede point #1 to you. In that scenario it would have been best to use a sled or miter gauge.
Please don’t teach newbies to crosscut using the fence instead of the miter gauge. Even if you don’t care about your fingers, they might.

My guess is that he has yet to experience full blown kickback....
I understand the concern here. And, I of course don't want to teach anyone bad habits. Technically it is a "crosscut" but what you don't see in the video is that I made NUMEROUS trial movements with that board before I even turned on the blade to make sure that the cut was unobstructed, moved freely, and was well supported. I also considered using the miter gauge instead of the fence but there wasn't enough infeed depth for the miter to keep the board square at the beginning of the cut. In the grand scheme of things I do grant that there may have been a safer way to make the cut, perhaps with my circular saw.
Side note, I have indeed experienced a kickback. They are definitely a force to be reckoned with.
Great demo but I hope you aren't still cutting like that on the tablesaw, it is super dangerous cutting narrow boards on a tablesaw against a fence, the board can move from the fence and then all sorts of horrible things can happen. Please take a look at some safety videos and understand where you are going wrong on this cut.
Thank you. And no, I'm not making cuts like that anymore. I know it's sketchy and looking back there were other ways to do it. At the time it seemed safe enough but you and others that have commented the same are right.
Get rid of the music man especially when you’re talking we can barely hear what you’re saying
Two minutes to build if you work 1 hundred miles an hour and then no example of how to use jig😖
I mean, if an example is needed I suppose I make a 5 second video on how to use it. And yeah, it's a quick build. That's the point. It's an easy tool to make. And something that any woodworker should be able to knock out in a few minutes.

I have very little patience for self absorbed performers. He spends time telling us what he is going to do. Then he tells us AGAIN while he's doing it. He tells us about why he doesn't have a tool handy, which I don't care about. And more time showing us how to sand everything to infinity with a power tool. And all this for an extremely simple homemade tool. Thumbs DOWN. Bye.
I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the video. I appreciate your feedback about the repetition in the video. It is something that I have always struggled with and am trying to change that. My content isn't for everyone, and that's ok. I hope you find a creator that checks all your boxes and isn't "self absorbed".
