    Hi Mlgardener,
    correction: the Vietnamese coriander ( rau răm) has a strong herb scent. We use it as often as basil for salad, etc. The one you’re mentioning is an actual weed, and has no scent at all, I think it can be toxic! Rau răm loves water and barely survive in the ground. They both look identical, as a native Vietnamese I cannot tell the difference until I smell them. Please beware! 🙏🙏🙏

    Just a suggestion, you may want to show a spurge weed next to purslane. Some people get them confused. Spurge is toxic.

    • @torriekolbeck5117
      @torriekolbeck5117 3 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Just in case someone reads your comment and wants to know the difference the spurge weed has a milk substance in it when you break the leaf and / or stem. The purslane does not. Most, but not all things that have a white milky substance when you break the leaf or stem are toxic. The one exception is dandelion.

    Purslane is a part of turkish cuisine. We eat it as dish cooked together with sauteed onions, garlic, a little rice and tomatoes. It is delicious that way. It is slightly acidic and delicious that way. It can also be eaten raw as a salad when mixed with garlic yogurt.

      It's called semiz otu in turkish right? My family eats it raw in yogurt with garlic, lemon and salt sprinkled on top. It tastes super fresh and delicious.
      We also eat the first weed he show. It's called kuzu kulağı or lambs ear in turkish. You put it in flat bread or tortilla's with other fresh greens some lemon and salt . It's really good and light.

    Thanks for highlighting some tasty garden weeds! Dandelions, lambs quarter, amaranth, and purslane would be worthy of planting and growing in a garden, if they didn't do that so easily by themselves. Lambs quarter is one of the best cooked greens, even compared to garden greens - and so simple to just saute for about 3 minutes with a little water, then top with a little salt. Don't weed the garden -- harvest an extra crop! : )

    Two comments:
    I want to thank you for taking the time to make
    your You Tubes. They are full of useful
    information. Also, the depth of your
    information gives a fundamental concepts of the garden.You explained the concept of burying straw and
    other fibrous materials to hold water under the surface of the growing
    area. Why not use mulch (straw, leaves,
    sawdust, etc.) to cover the surface of the planting area. To me, this would be useful to hold moisture
    in the ground, keep weed seeds from germinating, and would eventually be a
    source of organic matter.
    Again, you’re doing a great job. Congratulations on the new addition to your
    family.

    This information is so vital and wish it was taught more! I was born and raised in Hawaii and my father is from the northern part of Philippines. He’s Ilocano and there’s a running joke that Ilocanos are like goats because they eat any plant hahaha.
    There were so much amaranthus growing in our area my father use to use it in his dishes. He would wait till they flowered though and I loved eating the tips of the plant. I forget the name of it but there is somewhat of a soup with a few these “foragables” (is that a word?), especially amaranthus. He cooked it with taro stalks and root, and other veggies like squash flowers, and it would be an almost purple grayish soup. It had a nice tart too it, not sour, it was a savory flavor with a nice tart. It pairs amazingly with fried fish and of course rice! I miss these dishes and every time I visit home he cooks them!

    My backyard is almost only weeds and hardley any grass, we dont really care though because they serve a similar purpose to grass in holding the soil in place and all the little flowers that come from them look nice too.

    Planting purslane outside your chicken run and allowing it to invade gives your chickens regrowing snacks and the crazy part is the Omega-3s get passed into the eggs. Eggs from hens who eat purslane are healthier than from hens that don´t eat purslane.

    I've known about the dandelions for awhile now but those other four are totally new to me. I am going to be spending quite a while staring at my weeds tomorrow. I know for a fact I have Lambsquarter everywhere. I'm pretty sure I've seen Palmers Amaranth, and Purslane around as well, but I don't know if I have Vietnamese Coriander. But since that one's the bitter one, I won't be complaining! I have such horrid luck with leafy greens that these "weeds" will most likely become my go to crops!

    There is also perilla, aka sesame leaf (actually not sesame, just translated that way.) There is Japanese Shiso and Korean Kkaenip, which are used differently because of the taste. Farmers hate it because it's toxic to cattle. But it's really good for humans and has a basil/minty taste. I recommend looking it up since I hear it's pretty abundant, especially in the southeast US. I grow my own in a pot since I don't think it's where I live and I'm not very good at distinguishing edible wild plants hahaha

    Looks like you're having a hard time with all those weeds in your new beds. Have you considered trying the back to Eden method? You don't have to go all out but if you put a nice top dressing of wood chips, it would help a lot.

    I have none of these except dandelion. In fact I planted purslanne and couldn't get it to grow in SC. Ofcourse I have a million other weeds and I routinely eat myself out of the 1/2 to 3/4 acre to the point where I have to add store bought greens to it, ofcourse I also have 3-4 boxes of boiled out greens at any time sitting in the fridge for various uses. But I need to get all these growing, purslanne especially.

    So awesome to learn that a weed easily found can be used for chicken feed. I've saved the information for when I move to the farm, so I can put it to use. Thanks Luke!
    Dandelions can also be used to make jelly! 😜 I want to try it, but haven't gotten enough dandelion petals yet. 4 cups of petals only is a lot of dandelions. 😵
    Thanks for the info Luke, hope everyone is doing well.

    There must be a couple different kinds of Vietnamese coriander. I've seen the ones that you have in your garden as well as mine and yes they are kinda bitter. And I've seen the ones that are sold at Asian markets. They do look very similar but the true Vietnamese coriander has a great taste. I wish it would grow wild here but its a tender tropical plant. I did manage to propagate one from a store bought bushel.

    • @seansean681
      @seansean681 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree! The flavor of true Vietnamese Coriander (Rau Rum) is not bitter at all and gives off a very beautiful scent/flavor. We use it in a lot of our Southeast Asian dishes.

      I eat a lot of weeds and can attest to how the dandelions, purslane, lambs quarter, and amaranth are great to eat. They can be real food for regular people. I have videos showing how to pick and eat a bunch of them. I think lambs quarter is better than spinach and way better than chard. Even people that don't like dandelions will like lambs quarter. And amaranth is right up there, too - easily in the top 10 of wild greens. Even bigger dandelions are tasty, if the leaves are lush and fast-growing, rather than scrawny and stressed. Just strip out that middle rib like you would on kale or chard. You aren't "weeding" if you are "harvesting" from a "multi-crop bed". : )
