Sergei looks at Katia with such adoration in his eyes. You notice his smirk when she sneaks up behind him, and the way he grins at her when they are skating. He was so good to her. :(
He was sort of protective of her, if I remember right, from "My Sergei". In that regard, though, he did her no favors, because, after he died, she had to learn the hard way that not everyone had her best interests at heart. Some of the people who wanted to 'help' her were more interested in exploiting her instead.
Taneesha Gray they really were. There won’t be another pair team like them for a long time. My heart broke for Katia in 1995 and I still haven’t gotten over it. But she is really made a case for herself, became a beautiful solo skater so we would remember Sergei’s memory.
I was at one of these last shows, so wonderful. No idea it was to be the end of an era. Less than a year later the great Sergei Grinkov was dead. Still heartbroken 23 years later.
Those were days when figure skating rocked…. Such a great line up of talented skaters! Of course GG are my all time favorite. I love their connection on and off the ice. The way they looked into each other eyes, the way they kissed and he always touched her in some way or another after a performance. What a love, what a fortunate woman katia was to have such a love.
G&G fan here. I must write that, despite they were shining, all SOI was incredibly good. This was the golden age of the professional skating, and ice skating in general. I mean, I didn't see the downbound curve of ice skating since I quit to watch it when Sergei died, but I deeply miss not only him, I miss the whole time. And my age too.
I love the moments at 2:37 and 11:50, with Kurt Browning and Scott Hamilton trying to put the moves on Katia right with Sergei behind them. I can just imagine him telling them the Russian equivalent of "Back off, you two. She's my woman!" And, she plays along.
God this brings back so many good memories. The "glory" days of SOI as I like to call it. I was in high school when I saw this tour. One of the most exciting nights of my life...at that point anyway.
Rare SOI footage with Sergei & Katia! This must have been the last season before he died. Also, I believe this same "Out of Tears" routine was the last one they ever did together - in an expedition show about 10 days before he died.
It was the same year Sergei died. This was in Toronto at the end of April 1995 as I was in the audience but I can't remember the exact day but it was between the 23rd of April & the 25th I believe. 7 month's later we all lost Sergei so I'm super happy to have had the honor to see them skate.
Those early 90s SOI were awesome shows. So much energy with the group and crowd - and Kristy was about as good as it could get. Nothing like it today. ❤
I saw Stars on Ice years ago, but it was with Katya, Ilia, Scott, Tara, etc. Was a great show of course, but the feeling of wishing Sergei was there was strong!
All I can say is I am blessed to have been in the audience this night seeing Gordeeva & Grinkov as nobody knew he was going to pass away & I still have the program book ➕ the song list with everyone's name in the program book which is now priceless as picture's of Katia & Sergei are in the book.
@@PatchesMother wow! I saw Katia in 1999 but I so wish I had seen Katia and Sergei live. They are the best in pairs ever. I so wish he was here still to enjoy life and his family. Katia and Sergei loved each other SO MUCH! Every lady dreams of having a SERGEI. Such a tragic love story
My dad who was a macho man wanted to bring me to a stars on ice. I started skating so late and didnt want them to spend more (the old school unlike today when you think outsode of your own wants) I said no. I was honoured he thought of it. This was the tour. God i wish I was more selfish at that time. I missed out. And my old man is gone. That would have meant something. Damn
This is sooooo cool! I went ice skating the 24th of January and ever since then I've wanted to go back but alas the closest ice skating rink is two hours away.
kamwrites So true. I don't know if it's just b/c we're only now and didn't grow up watching the current skaters, but it definitely doesn't have that "magic" for me anymore. Even with the new scoring system in the competitions... the programs just don't have the same feeling.
Tied with 99-00's What a Wonderful World finale for best SOI closing number of all time. This was EPIC. Obviously SOI isn't like this anymore... it used to be the premiere tour for the best and brightest pro skaters and it peaked during the heyday of skating, where promoters and sponsors would plunk down BIG money for figure skating events and the arenas would be sold out night after night. Now there is no real pro circuit at all because the line between eligible and non-eligible skaters has blurred to almost nothing, and no one has money to throw on producing lavish tours like this. They used to practice for the U.S. SOI group numbers and transitions for WEEKS in Lake Placid before the tour opened. Now, they would never have the luxury to do that, so they've minimized the group numbers, almost entirely eliminated the thematic transitions, and turned more into a show like the old Champions on Ice, which showcased one-off, unconnected programs from current medalists.
Perfectly stated. It's all just about quads and triple combinations now. Scott Hamilton believes the scandal with Tonya Harding ruined professional figure skating. In the beginning it helped but ultimately the false dollar figures ruined it for subsequent generations of skaters.
@lisfong Ekaterina is there! She is in red skating with Sergei. As for Paul and Rosalyn, maybe they only did the American tour, not the Canadian tour that year.
Queen Mao Asada lol! but after it was suppose to twist up to a jump I do believe. The movie was cut and paste but still one of my favs. great comment, made my day. Cheers!
Thank you for posting this video, SuperFigureskating!! Sheer beauty and sheer joy this is. Warmed my heart! I'd love to learn the names of the dancers...Help me anybody?
Hough&Ladret are in pink, Gordeeva&Grinkov are in red, Bechke&Petrov are in Green. Kurt Browning is in gold tee. Kristi Yamaguchi in white dress, Josee Chouinard in gold dress. Scott Hamilton in white tee. Brian Orser in black. Annenko & Sretenski are in purple. Brasseur&Eisler in blue. (:
The cast that is listed in the video details is incorrect, because that was the U.S. SOI cast the same year and this is the CSOI version. This cast includes Scott Hamilton, Brian Orser, Kurt Browning, Natalia Anneko and Genrikh Stretenski, Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov, Christine Hough and Doug Ladret, Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Josee Chouinard. (I think that's it? Am I forgetting anyone?)
I absolutely love this but there's clear edition after Dance Little Sister. What happened in between? I searched in other videos but there's always the cut.
Still can’t find any reason that Sergei was taken. There is supposed to be a reason for everything. This seemed criminal then and it hasn’t changed. The way he was ripped away was just beyond horrible. My heart still breaks for Katie and Daria.
I think his soul was done with skating actually. He was so tied to her in every way that he couldn’t just quit and go home to Connecticut or Russia while she skated around the world. As hard as it is to believe, I think his soul just said, if I check out, she can go on. It’s the only thing that made sense to me.
FYI the drop down menu has the wrong cast members. I know for a fact the it doesn't list Josee Chouinard and she is definitely in this cast. I don't see Paul Wylie, Rosalin Sumners nor Katerina Witt also they left out Canadian greats Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler
I finally figured out what was missing...Where are Ekaterina, Rosalynn and Paul? It's just not the same without them! Was this a later recording because the one I had when it first aired had the other three.
Gordeeva and Grinkov. There’ll never be another duo like them again.
Lá
I know in my heart there will NEVER be another G & G ever for eternity
so true! I miss G&G so much 😢
Sergei looks at Katia with such adoration in his eyes. You notice his smirk when she sneaks up behind him, and the way he grins at her when they are skating. He was so good to her. :(
campbellka too good, probably
campbellka too good probably
@Svetlana May i ask why did you say that?! Just curious!
Dasha Edmonds I interpret it as "too good for this world" 😣
He was sort of protective of her, if I remember right, from "My Sergei". In that regard, though, he did her no favors, because, after he died, she had to learn the hard way that not everyone had her best interests at heart. Some of the people who wanted to 'help' her were more interested in exploiting her instead.
Grinkov and Gordeeva were so Beautiful!

Watching Katya and Sergei makes me feel so much sorrow!!!
I was at one of these last shows, so wonderful. No idea it was to be the end of an era. Less than a year later the great Sergei Grinkov was dead. Still heartbroken 23 years later.
7 month's later as I was in the audience, I'm blessed to have been able to witness the beauty of G & G live in Toronto.
This was the best days of figure skating/
I agree!
also agree! My dad actually watched it with me and he was a guys guy.
Katia and Sergei the best

The way they looked into each other eyes, the way they kissed and he always touched her in some way or another after a performance. What a love, what a fortunate woman katia was to have such a love.
The greatest skaters ever assembled on one rink at one time!!!!
Watching Katia and Sergei just breaks my heart. Literally.
Daria looks so much like her father
G&G fan here. I must write that, despite they were shining, all SOI was incredibly good. This was the golden age of the professional skating, and ice skating in general. I mean, I didn't see the downbound curve of ice skating since I quit to watch it when Sergei died, but I deeply miss not only him, I miss the whole time. And my age too.
Somehow Kurt Browning managed to out-Jagger Mick Jagger. On ice skates. Wow.
I’m
OMG!!!
Beautiful!!😍
Gordeeva and Grinkov💓💞
I cry of joy💘
Sergei Grinkov was other level 🔥 I can take my eyed of him and katia.
How those two kept from not bursting out in laughter while carrying Scott Hamilton--it's hilarious!
He's so awesome.
Always loved Scott Hamilton’s back flips ❤️❤️❤️
Rare SOI footage with Sergei & Katia! This must have been the last season before he died. Also, I believe this same "Out of Tears" routine was the last one they ever did together - in an expedition show about 10 days before he died.

Katia and Sergei we're clearly the best.
G&G always solid and special. Thanks... Miss you Sergei . Love you katya
STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!!!!! A MARVEL OF FIGURE SKATING PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those were the days my Friends!...........We had so much fun!!!!!!
Christine and Doug doing the "Headbanger" move always makes me flinch lol.
Toughy was always my moms favorite. Love that team
Those early 90s SOI were awesome shows. So much energy with the group and crowd - and Kristy was about as good as it could get. Nothing like it today. ❤
Today, skaters take themselves too seriously...these guys and gals took the skating seriously, but not themselves...they were entertainers.
my favorite SOIfinale!
Rip gentle giant and thank you cast. Always one of my favs
I saw this cast in Toronto back in Spring '95 and so happy to see it on TH-cam.
Me to at the end of April 1995.
Jealous! ❤
Best there was!
this is when soi was great.
always thought Denis Petrov was so under rated.
I always loved watching him and Elena skate.
Used to have this on VHS and i went to see the show too.
I saw Stars on Ice years ago, but it was with Katya, Ilia, Scott, Tara, etc. Was a great show of course, but the feeling of wishing Sergei was there was strong!
I used to love going to SOI those days.
Best cast ever
Sadly this is the last season that Sergei Grinkov skated before he died in the fall of 1995
All I can say is I am blessed to have been in the audience this night seeing Gordeeva & Grinkov as nobody knew he was going to pass away & I still have the program book ➕ the song list with everyone's name in the program book which is now priceless as picture's of Katia & Sergei are in the book.

Classic SOI group number, awesome!
Grinkov and gordeeva always in our hearts
Best finale and skaters ever!!! Thanks for the post!:)
this is when soi was great.

Good lord they had a huge cast! Think this is the largest SOI cast I've seen.
I think 99 was bigger actually. But yeah, the casts definitely aren't this big anymore. They don't have the same feeling either.
Jennifer S SOI is definitely past it's "magic" time.
kamwrites So true. I don't know if it's just b/c we're only now and didn't grow up watching the current skaters, but it definitely doesn't have that "magic" for me anymore. Even with the new scoring system in the competitions... the programs just don't have the same feeling.
kamwrites I still love going to the shows every year! I was at this one too - hard to believe that was 20 years ago.
Simply amazing.
My favorite part at 8:25 to 8:46.... But all of it is Beautiful!
Tied with 99-00's What a Wonderful World finale for best SOI closing number of all time. This was EPIC.

Hi guys! Is there some good quality of the full show? I would like to see more of G&G! 🤩
So would all of us
Thank you for posting this video, SuperFigureskating!! Sheer beauty and sheer joy this is. Warmed my heart! I'd love to learn the names of the dancers...Help me anybody?

I didn't see Katerina Witt. I believe the blonde singles skater was Jill Trenary. And I didn't see Paul Wylie in here either. But loved the program.

Who are the pairs in purple and blue? I recognize the others, but not them.
Bechke & Petrov
You know those girls love you Scott, but not Kurt Brown???
Who's the guy in black at 5:25?
Brian Orser I think
Brian? Oooohhhh
thanks for posting this! I am drawing a blank on who the "green team" is. I know they're Russian...anyone remember?
Elena Betcke and Dennis Petrov. (Spelled her last name wrong)
