This theme is the perfect ending song for this game, it perfectly conveys a bittersweet victory. Gordon defeated the Nihilanth but now he is nothing more than a slave to an even more powerful being, Gordon saved the earth but at the same time he set the events in motion which would doom the earth to an even more horrific fate. Great job Joel Nielsen, the soundtrack is easily one of my favourite aspects of Black Mesa. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙘 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚, 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙.

It's not just about the victory. It makes me recall everything you had to go through leading up to this moment. You went from crawling through vents, sewage, dams, science facilities, encounters with the military, to an alien world, I mean, it made you feel like you went to hell and back. It was very fitting music to hear at the end that started out slow, imagine yourself back on that train ride to work and only built up as did the black mesa incident and everything that followed with it. Masterpiece musc.
Always remember. The right man in the wrong place...can make all the difference in the world. Potential is everything.

As Gordon went into stasis, he was probably hoping that he had made it through the worst. Little did he know that his trials were not ending, but had only just begun.

So I've only seen the part you're referring to from an extended version of this track that I've listened to over and over and over and... you get the point. I was wondering if that guy that walks into that rail car with him (Freeman?) Is he a shady character or what?

I love how emotionally ambiguous this is. You've just saved your home, or so you think; you've killed the leader of the invaders and allowed a man in a suit to take control of his realm; now, you're either signing off on a deal with this man you've only just met, or you're being repaid by the people you massacred over the past couple days.
I love the female vocals you add into the Xen portions of the soundtrack. It feels like a completely different game. Like Avatar: The Game. Coupled with the massive overhaul of the Xen levels it even plays and looks like a completely different game.

coincidentally, this soundtrack really gives off the same vibes from Ending Triumph from Half Life: Alyx. That feeling of raw uncertainty, whilst establishing a positive and hopeful outlook towards whats next.
I do hope whoever is going to be in charge of a HL2 remake in the future will be able to capture the magic that Crowbar Collective used to make this game, but more importantly the soundtrack you've made for this game.

This sums whole BM perfectly.
It is perfect mix of earth and Xen OST sections, combining instruments and styles.
When I listen to this, I feel like I'm watching movie or documentary scenes about what happens after Gordon being employed.
Below are just scenes from my imagination:
Scene #1: Inside of a random sector in BMRF, several HECU soldiers, who have been left behind, fruitlessly attempt to retreat from the facility or keep resisting against overwhelming number of creatures from Xen. One by one, soldiers fall down.
Scene #2: Again, another group of HECU soldiers in another random sector. However, this time, they struggle against a group of Black Ops. Similar to the fate of ones in Scene #1, they eventually all get executed.
Scene #3: Now, the overall scene of BMRF from the far place. 1 or 2 seconds later, the scene becomes filled with the light of nuclear explosions (underground explosions might be more efficient, but, well, for the sake of the dramatic scene)
Scene #4: (Either short clips or just photos): This scene shows situations outside of BM, after the whole BM incident: towns filled with headcrabs, zombies, and bullsquids, people running away, military trying to save people and engaging against gargantuas, governments from various countries slowly falling down, and several large cities filled with refugee and becoming worse in living conditions overall....
Scene #5: Maybe the final scene. Portal Storm brings overwhelming number of Combine military force. Remaining soldiers of Earth desperately fight against the Combine, but eventually fail. Many cities become parts of a history. They are just areas with piles of dead bodies and collapsed buildings (or overall scenes showing desperate moments of the Seven Hour War).
*This music plays along these scenes.
I bet many people would disagree with what I'm thinking......
Actually I do love what you imagined, but probably, the same as the Half-Life original, they kept in the same anyways, your idea it's not that bad, but I would consider the scenes you mentioned would be used if Half Life 2 got a remaster/remake or Operation Black Mesa.

Nihil is latin for "not". And anth is short for anthropos, (Greek for "man")
Since the Nihilanth is referencing some other being besides himself... Well, the Gman was the only other being around his same power level. (Local teleportation, telekinesis, time/space manipulation, etc) It's a popular theory that Gman might be a sort of Nihilanth. (The body you see, being a sort of projection it uses to communicate directly)

The admiration of the entire Half Life fanbase though? Infinitely more meaningful.
The canon ending of Half life/Black Mesa always got me thinking. The G-man might have saved Gordon's life. I mean, had the Lambda complex any means of getting him back to earth? Especially as the controllers attacked the lab as Gordon was about to go to Xen and even if there had been a way to get back to Earth, could Gordon have gotten out in time before the nuke detonated?
He did save his life but not without a price... Nothing in life is free.

I don't know if this is just me, but this soundtrack just really feels like "the journey is over". It's almost as if you can recognize different instruments that have been used throughout the game, to compose one final piece of beautiful music. I especially love the vocals, throughout zen we've been hearing a motif using the 2 notes, but here, it's almost as if that motif gets extended to 4 notes, and finishes. And that clearly stands out, because, if the vocals represent humanity, then when Gordon, a human, had completed his journey through zen, that melody finally becomes complete.
Or I'm just an utter nutcase, but I loved what you've done here Joel! I hope that you get to utilize your talents even further in the future!

I think this might just be my new favorite song on the soundtrack.
This was just perfect for the credits,the slow and perfectly fitting atmosphere,i love it so much,i literally got the chills even at the credits

I listen to this every day now. The whole black mesa playlist and I always feel good hearing it. It all fits together so nicely within the game and I quite honestly wish I could have this playing in my head 24/7
Mister Nielsen you just bring tears to the eyes to a Half life's fan (like many others i'm sure), not only because you work with Crowbar Collective to resurrect a living legend but also you achieved to give a soul to the whole project. Wow that end credits song. It' so much suits the ending. One of the best, if not the best endcredits i heard. Here i compare with me series, and tftbl. Scratch that. Whole ost is just a masterpiece. Bravo.

Whenever I think of what are the greatest gaming soundtracks I've ever heard, without fail, this one comes up all the time. I hate to be put on the spot right now, but soundtracks that I find timeless are The Witcher 3, Days Gone, I used to love World of Warcraft pieces, but it's been so long since I heard any of them or played that game. This one is easily one of the best soundtracks that takes the experience to another level. Thank you for your service and what you crafted here.

This soundtrack sounds like a clock, I think it may be hinting the timeline.
It probably shows the fact that G-man has you, you are stuck in this void until he wants to let you out in the world again.

Well he is, he invades another world mercilessly killing its inhabitants, he has enslaved another species and uses mind control on them when he wants to force them into battle. Its no great loss that the Combine were hunting him, just a shame they followed him to us.
well,his kind became extinct, he lost his homeland to combine invaders, forced to migrate to xen. it was a matter of time to be found by combine. he was just a desperate leader who has no time for negotiation of migration to world. as we saw them as enemies, they too saw us as enemies. he saw the chance, he took the chance. i agree with you he is not a good character but in my opinion he isn't the bad guy in the half life lore.
The real bad guys in the hl universe are gman and his employers

This is the best song in Xen sountrack
Finished Black Mesa all the way through (with the Purple Hat too!) for the first time tonight. Played through in 2018 before Xen, I liked it but forgot about it. This time around... What a ride. Honestly, this may have cemented itself as my favorite Half Life game, outclassing even Valve's own work. And Joel's music absolutely played a massive part in it. Listening to the music while letting a feeling of relief wash over me... Mixed with the bittersweet sadness that it was over, and knowing that it only gets worse for Gordon from here on out.
Amazing game. Amazing soundtrack. I hope one day to hear Joel's music in an official Half Life game, made by the members of Crowbar Collective.

I love how this track is different from the one on Half Life, knowing what will come after defeating Nihilant. While the orginal one was positive congratulations, this one is a requiem for the mankind.

Tous les jours j'écoute l'entièreté de cette OST, tout simplement du génie..
Honestly this song reminds me more of Opposing Force's ending more than the original game. And I think it works. When Half Life released, there was no Combine, no Breen, no City 17. Valve wanted a vague ending for that reason so the possibilities would be limitless (yeah I said it). Here we (well everyone who's already played HL1) know of the fate of humanity and Black Mesa. The Nihilanth is dead, but the war isn't over, even after 7 hours. So having a dark theme with a very threatening vibe to it fits, and even without that context it adds to the mystery of the G-Man. Gordon is hired, but for what? And to this date, we'll never now.
