    I've just read on the Zappi forum that the update is now live (finally!) but it has to be done by the dealer. It takes 20-30 minutes. Let me know how you get on!

    Hi Andrew, I think that the Megan’s starts charging when you turn the cars “ignition” on at about 0.4kW because you have “preconditioning” turned on on the Zappi, which is in the settings, to allow the car to use heating and air con from the mains when plugged in, to save your battery for the commute. This setting can be turned on and off under “preconditioning” in the “charge settings” section of the Zappi menu. Great video - there are still a lot of issues with the charging standard that manufacturers need to work through!

    Hi Andrew, like others have mentioned, I have only ever used the zappi scheduling system and never use the cars. It has worked for me every time. Eco plus mode and then set the schedule. Its very easy so might be worth a go...good luck!

      BTW has anyone ever done this new take on granny-charging vs wall-charging: which method loses more heat energy? Or what % of billed kWh is lost between socket and EV in either scenario? 🔌⚡(🌡️)🔋🚗 ?

    I was at a charging point on the m6 last night, as I was about to unplug a lady in a megane pulled in next to me. She asked if I had issues with charged scheduling (I have a fiat 500e). Even at the Gridserve charger her car was having issues getting it to connect. I advised her to turn off the schedule in the car and once she did it connected straight away - so seeing this post explains why she was having so many issues. I really hope Renault get these issues fixed quickly. Thank you so much for posting this, I really hope the lady somehow see this post as she was getting so frustrated 🤞🏻
    I use an Easee one home charger and I always set my charging schedule on the Easee one instead of the cars. Must admit I have been having issues with the latest updates to the fiat app hopefully they will fix it when the next app update comes

    I have a Niro, but don’t use its scheduling (never tried it) instead I use the boost function of the zappi. Set a scheduled boost on the zappi and connect the car in eco+ mode. Unless you have surplus solar or a battery, the eco+ won’t charge during the day, but the boost kicks in overnight.
    Worked fine for me, and is effectively driven by the zappi end.

    Thanks for taking the time to do a video on this issue. It’s been one that has been dogging Megane owners for far too long unfortunately now. I was hoping that you would have captured more of the plug/unplug/swear/open both doors dance that seems to be necessary to get the charging to start.

    I'm on my 5th BEV over 14 years & our 2nd Zoe.
    We have never let our charger or any app near the charging scheduling process; we always let the car do it especially on public chargers.
    I believe Renaults have a reputation for earthing problems, happened a few times with me while using high speed AC chargers.

    We’ve had the same issues with our Megane and Zappi. Fortunately, it hasn’t caused too many critical issues as our trusty Niro is always ready in an emergency. Nonetheless, our Renault agent in Exeter assured us Renault are on the case and as you said will deliver an OTA update in early July.
    We wait and see add just top the Megane up on sunshine using the Eco function on Zappi.

    Informative yet again Mr EV. Ariya and Zappi seem to co-exist pretty well. I have experienced a couple of missed charges wen using the charge timer but this has not happened since a recent over the air update from Nissan. There have been some downsides though, since the update, when a charge starts on timer, the car alarm has also gone off, which is quite annoying for me (and our neighbours). This also occurs when you use the app to set the cabin temperature preconditioning functions before leaving for a trip.

    • @TheRamblyChannel

    It may be me that is the friend with the Ariya mentioned in the video 😁 I can confirm that the Ariya works with timed changing. I’ve been setting both the Ariya timed charging using the Nissan Connect app and also (at the same time) setting the scheduled time in the MyEnergi app with it on Eco+ mode as you mentioned in your pinned comment. Being new to all this I didn’t know if I should just set one or both of them?! 🤪

    Our Cupra Born V2 loan one did not need a timer I only needed to set a timer on the Andersen A2 wall charger. But our new V3 Cupra Born needs it's timer set for the off peak tariff. So seems to vary by car and wall charger combination.

    Yeah, Tesla really understands the prosumer. I swapped out my old Rolec wall charger for a Tesla wall charger. You order the charger via the app (like everything with Tesla) and a day later it arrives and in about two hours or so and a trip to Wickes for a bit of 5x1” and you have it mounted. It cost me circa £475 and a bit of skilled labour to get it up and running. You just initialise the network and tick a couple of boxes in the web portal into the unit and off you go. And I have that hooked up to OVO Anytime, which tells the car when to do demand charging anytime during the day; mostly at night between midnight and 07:30. There’s a lot of fluff out there about charging you upwards of £1500 to get one fitted, but in truth you can do it for around £500-600. My unit was just a straight swap, so I didn’t have to plum in the 32A wiring and breaker; but that should take no more than two hours with someone who knows what they are doing. You just need to find a good lecky.

  • @mwheelersmith
    @mwheelersmith ปีที่แล้ว

    Tesla owner here, mine also sips power when it's plugged in and not charging. I think this is to run it's basic systems (screen etc). It draws around 6 amps if the air-con is on too. Sounds about right. But yeah, wall pod (Andersen in my case) still says charging at around 1kwh, even when the car isn't scheduled to charge for another few hours.

    Thank you for posting this, our Megane has been with us for 8 weeks and this charging issue with the Zappi has been driving me crazy. Interestingly my issue is less with the timer and more with the problem you had when you tried to turn it off. Even when I have the car on instant charge the Zappi and the Megane fall out and the Zappi says the car has delayed the charging and I get the flashing red lights. It sometimes takes 5 or 6 attempts of unplugging and replugging it to get them to talk. This is particularly annoying as I want to charge off our solar panels on the Zappi's Eco++ setting, but if a cloud passes over then the charging switches off until the panels are giving enough charge, but then the Megane and the Zappi fall out and that's the end of my charging. I did take it to Renault main dealer and they have confirmed the update will be ready in October and I need to bring it back.

    Got the same setup as yourself, I also have panels so generally charge when it’s sunny on instant charge setting on the car
    More times than not it starts charging for a second or two then stops with the same error showing as with you.
    The only way of solving the problem was to plug in and unplug multiple times , normally anything up to 5, then the car will charge as requested.
    From early on I contacted Renault customer services, who have been very good at keeping me up to date with solutions,they told me that they were working with Zappi and a remote update will be available in July.

  • @roderickmain9697
    @roderickmain9697 ปีที่แล้ว

    I see others have had similar ideas to me. I wondered if there may be some schedule already set in the Zappi which conflicted in some way with the car's schedule.
    However, it would appear that its an interpretation of the specification that is wrong in the car. Over the last 45 years, I've had similar issues with bits of computer kit (Mainframes back in the day) which should talk but dont because some side or other (and sometime both) didnt implement some protocol the same way. Frustrating. When both sides understand the issue (frequently timing and snychronisation bewteen commands and responses) its usually straightforward to fix.

    Timed charging on my 23 Kia Niro has also died, it started with not wanting to charge on Tuesdays. The first 5 Tuesdays I had the Niro I had a problem charging, then the whole system failed and I can no longer use the timed/scheduled charging at all. I've had the Niro for 11 weeks. This week I got a call from my local dealer telling me that the believe they have a fix. They can't fit me in next week and then I'm away for the next ten days. I do hope they can fix it so I don't have to go out to the garage each night to plug in after 9pm, that's when out off peak time starts here. Cheers Tony

    Sounds similar to the same problems ID3 had initially with Zappi, the workaround for that was to set the zappi into eco mode (not eco+) with a boost timer of 12.30 to 4.30, plug the car in as late as you can, it will then immediately charge really slowly until 12.30 when it goes full speed. You don't get full benefit from the off peak but as you charge during peak pretty slow it's not too bad.

I have a little stumbling block in that I’ll neded the car 2 charge at 2 different addresses, mine and my partners. We are both with Octopus, but have separate accounts. I need Wi-Fi as 3/4G signal is really poor at one address. My question is will I be able to use the same charger (I like Hypervolt) at each address but have them kinked to different Octopus accounts do you think? I have tried plugging the cable into the car first then the EO charger, then vice versa and still 3 out of 4 times the light goes from solid blue to flashing red within 5 seconds. Eventually it will go blue then flashing blue and away we go on instant charge. However I want to charge over night as I am on Octopus GO( Renault is not incorporated into the Intelligent Octopus tariff yet). It has charged a couple of times overnight, but the success rate is about 5%. I have tried scheduling the EO charger and putting the Megane into instant mode, then doing the opposite where the Megane is in scheduled mode and the charger is just on auto. It just doesn't want to play. So until a software or a firmware update is available I am stuck with doing an instant charge at 00.30 till the battery is charged to a desired level. If you plug in for an immediate charge, open the myenergi app, tap on the car icon and you will see a pop up message telling you about the delay. Like you, I got am error message in my car until I found out about this. Also, have you checked the myenergi app for the times the charge failed overnight? I use an Ohme charger with a MG5 and had no problems for the last 2 years. There’s no setting up in the car the Ohme app as all the information it requires to charge at cheap rate lecy. I,m with octopus on their intelligent tariff which gives me 6hrs so things just happen automatically. I also find if there is spare capacity in the grid and the ev is plugged in it will start charging outside the off peak times, hence the saying smart charger . I understand that the use of 7k smart chargers is desired as the grid can estimate the required demand and therefore stage the charging so there’s is no massive demand all at one time. I find your situation is not fit for purpose and probably would be taking the Reno back regardless of what contract you have, or just use the Ohme charger.

      You can and that's what I normally do with e-Niro. I don't touch car's scheduler, just Zappi if needed, but even then, as I am on Octopus Intelligent, it is not really required as if I need to charge, I just plug the car in around 23:30/set Zappi to "Fast" mode (normally it sits on Eco+) and then let either Octopus start the charge or it will charge immediately and stop when charged to max value predefined in car or will stop at 5:30 as I have my tarrif set-up on myenergi account hence they know when daily tarrif kicks in. Theoretically Octopus should start/stop charging according to its schedule but in my experience it rarely works this way, probably something still not quite right with software integration between Kia and them.

    The problem of OTA only partially updating cars is common for all legacy auto makers. For an excellent explanation why listen to the recent Fully Charged Podcast with Ford CEO Jim Farley. Essentially Tesla are vertically integrated and own most of the low level firmware the car uses, traditional auto farms that out to hundreds of suppliers none of which talk to each other. Ford will bring more in house to achieve proper OTA updates.

    As others gave said Andrew, IGNORE the car timer! Many folk have come to grief when setting the car charging schedule, as some manufacturers link AC charging to DC timers!
    So the EV rule is DON’T use the car’s schedule, use the charger, Zappi, Hypervolt, Pod Point or whoever and leave the car to charge whenever plugged and then you won’t have stressful time at a charger AC or DC away from hime!

      By the way the perceived wisdom now, agreed by the battery manufacturers, LG, Tesla and the Chinese company I can never remember the name of, is the with AC charging, i.e using the cars BCCM to control charging, is that charging to 100% is OK, because it isn’t 100% of the batteries capacity, and it lets the BCCM cell balance when necessary, which is a GOOD thing for the longevity of the battery! Tesla now have cars that have covered 300,000 miles and have only lost 8% of capacity even when charged predominantly on DC! These are often 2013 - 14 cars and have passed the 8 year make some time ago.
      As for laptop batteries, NO charging control has ever been done up to now, save the latest OS from Apple that only lets the battery charge to 80% when left plugged into the mains.
      Others are learning from the automotive industry, mainly Tesla and LG on how to keep the HV battery in good health for a long, long time. Sadly the early Nissan Leaf wasn’t lucky hence low capacity and destroyed cells in the early ones. The new leaf is a far better car in that respect.

    • @ianmenai
      @ianmenai ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way, The folk at Zappi in Hull, can monitor your charger, have you suggested this? I know you said that the Megane was going back shortly, so maybe too late. I am on the Hypervolt beta test group or panel, so any changes can be monitored if I let them know, by an email, when my I-Pace is plugged in. They then can see what is going on inside the Hypervolt in realtime.

      The early Model 3's had the same problem - once the car was asleep it failed to detect that it was plugged in, and wouldn't wake to charge (this was the same whether it was a car or charger based schedule). It was fixed via an OTA software upgrade.
      Same issue applied when charging from solar (I'm Solaredge rather than Zappi. but the problem was the car, not the EVSE).
      The Megane will charge reliably if you set an alarm for 00:25, and unlock and re-lock the car (to wake it up) ...sub optimal.
