Jerry Cantrell is both an underrated guitar and singer.
Jerry Cantrell, the lead guitarist of AIC dad served in the Vietnam War and his soldier nickname was Rooster, Jerry wrote this song about his daddy, Layne sings it with all his heart in reverance to Jerry's dad.. If you watch the actual Rooster video you will see Jerry and his dad talking in the start of the video and snippets of them throughout..❤

The music video of this song pretty much explains what this song is about.
This song was written in tribute to his dad who served in Vietnam. His nickname was Rooster. “Walking talk machine gun man. They spit on me in my home land”. This was in reference to when the Vietnam soldiers returned home they were treated badly by (literally spit on) the protesters. There’s much more to it than what I just said, and maybe someone else can elaborate more, but that’s what this song is about.

My father returned from his "tour" in Vietnam but was still in the service. He and my mother were down in Biloxi. One Saturday morning they went into a local bakery and asked for a loaf of bread, sliced, as the woman behind the counter had a machine that was used for slicing the loaves. My dad was in uniform. She looked at my parents (my mother was teaching 2nd grade on the base) and said, "We don't slice no bread here. Y'all have a nice day,though." My father did NOT want to be in Vietnam. None of the soldiers did. But they served their country and got pissed on when they got back. Thank God things have changed. Every Veterans Day and 4th of July I drag my parents out to the concerts and make sure my father stands when his branch music is played.

Hello best friend! People have already said it, but I’m going to add my bit too. The song is about the struggle that Jerry’s dad (like so many others) had with the Vietnam War. His platoon called him Rooster. He went through the hell of war, only to come home and be mistreated by people here in the states. It’s a commentary on how jacked up war protesters can be when they point their animosity towards soldiers who were only fulfilling their duty.
You would love the sound and look of “Down in a hole” from their MTV Unplugged video. For sure will get you going! 😁

Jerry's father was nicknamed "rooster " before entering the veitnam war. The name was given to him by his father because of his cocky attitude as a child. M60 machine gunners in veitnam were called roosters because the muzzle flash looked like a roosters tail.

Growing up in the early 90s this was the jam and definitely my jam.
Hi sweetheart. Another great video from you from a fantastic band. I don’t need to say any more about the song because a few of your subscribers have already hit the nail on the head that the song was about the soldiers coming back from Vietnam and being spat on and the names that they were called by ‘ hippies’ Which still makes me angry to this day. It’s the same as the song, Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen. A lot of people tend to think that it is a patriotic song whereas it’s actually an anti government protest song to do with all the soldiers that were sent to Vietnam and what they came home to and were let down by the government that sent them there in the first place. BF, I'm so glad you listened to the audio for this song first. The video is hard to watch. The imagery of war-time is very overwhelming. I feel like at some point you may want to go there to experience it because it's a significant part of this song. The voices (Cantrell on the backing vocals, the guitars, the bass. I think this song is actually a lot like “Love, Hate, Love”. Both of them are just slow, dark, and epic. Like others said, it’s about guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s father in the Vietnam War. The official music video really spells it out, using footage so graphic it was banned. Just a heads-up if you watch it. But it’s one of Jerry’s finest songs, and Layne gave his words the dark power they needed.
If you haven't already, check out their MTV Unplugged set from 96. The whole set is amazing. Down In A Hole and Nutshell are my favorites. And you get to white boy shop as a bonus 😉😂

I think you should know this, IT'S REALLY SAD, he was dead in his place for 2 weeks before they found his body, His accountants called his family and said "HE HADN'T SPENT ANY MONEY IN A COUPLE WEEKS, SOMEONE NEEDS TO CHECK ON HIM" but HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY kinda gave up, he didn't give them a choice, THEY WOULD KNOCK/ BEAT on his door, he wouldn't answer.
