The last 2 years were blatant realizations that the Packers as a team were no longer good, and the coaching staff checked out. A-Rod threw just 2 INT's last season, 2! How does a QB lose 9 games throwing just 2 INT's!? How does a QB who has thrown 300 TD's before 100 INT's (first time ever), have a worse record through their first 158 starts than Brett Favre (a gunslinger with the most INT's of all time)? Yes, you speak truth. It's too easy to just blame the QB who is making pretty good coin. I know a lot of guys who at the end of the season said the Vikings should have kept Case Keenum. But the QB position was not the main problem. There was poor protection for Cousins all year. Now we see the Vikings made O-line a top priority in the draft. If Cousins were the problem, why would the Vikings have signed him to such a big contract in the first place? They upgraded at QB with Cousins. Besides, Keenum was due to make some big money anyway, so it's not as though the Vikings would have saved considerably more keeping Keenum. Last I checked, it's still a team game. Yes, and Tony Sparano. Really anyone with any type of experience coordinating a run game... or you know... any idea how to coach an o-line, not a tight end coach filling in.
Yep, and also why wins and ring arguments shouldn’t be used to put one player over another. There’s so much that goes into winning/losing that you can’t pin it on one person consistently. It would be different if this was golf or tennis, but this is football. You have 22 positions on the field, with over 50 people on a roster filling those positions. If your corner has a bad day, the guy he’s guarding is going for 100+ yards easily. If your line is struggling, you’re getting sacked 4-5 times or giving up 4.5+ yards a carry. If your team is making a lot of mental mistakes, you’re giving the other team 80+ yards worth of penalties. There’s a reason only one QB in NFL history has 5+ SBs, and even then it’s taken him almost 20 years to do it. That’s with good/great defense. That’s with great coaching. That’s with great front office management in drafts and development.
From the bottom of every Vikings’ fans heart: THANK YOU!!!! Jesus Christ, the criticism was so misguided. This video was right on the money and STILL neglected to mention the passing of OL coach and run game coordinator Tony Sparano, Everson Griffen’s mental health, the crappy kicking game even with one of the league’s historic best kickers, and the injuries on defense. Like how much adversity can a team possibly go through? I expect great things in 2019, and I hope everyone keeps sleeping on us, because we were one game from the Super Bowl with Case Keenum in 2017.
Our defense was top 3 last year despite how awful our offense was and the fact they had to carry the team almost every game. OL will be improved (nothing is as bad as Remmers and Compton). Our first four picks were all offense and all have promise. Scheme won’t be so terrible. With some semblance of a running game we are set to explode. We were still a half game from the playoffs despite everything that went so wrong last year.
TheEsotericism1 Tony Sparano died just before the start of the season as well. He was the reason the Vikings made it so far in 2017 because he made an awful o-line look passable. As for the defensive injuries. Mike Hughes (the Vikings # 1 pick last year) missed most of the season with a bad injury. Xavier Rhodes was banged up all year and when he did play, he didnt look the same. With Griffin, I still dont know what happened with him. Ive never seen this before in Active players. I hate to say it, but I think he might have early onset CTE. This is just a theory. But he just didnt look good when he came back last year. And in fact, hasnt looked the same since he got hurt in 2017. With regards to the kicking game, I hate that they released Carlson. Yeah he had a bad game. He missed 3 kicks against GB, any of which would have won the game. They were WAY to reactive to that though. He gets cut, only to be pivked up and turn into a great kicker for Oakland. When they picked up Bailey, he was playing through a groin injury, so he didnt look the same either. The lack of using the run game was mind numbingly frustrating for all Vikings fans. I know its 2019, and its a pass happy league. But you have a great RB. One that looks like a young Jamaal Charles. Use him! When they beat the Dolphins and Cook went off, i had some optimism they would start using him more, but nope!
I was as the Packers Vikings week 2 game and while the roughing call was ridiculous, Cousins was clutch that final drive and got the Vikes in positions to win until things happened that were out of his control. It summed up the whole season
Ppl bring up the roughing the passer call but never bring up the identical call on Rodgers from Kendrick’s. If they called that one might as well call the identical hit that just happened to be at a more critical moment.
I felt it was kinda therapeutic, especially knowing most of the issue was the coaching (the o-line personal isn't made for the type of pass pro they were asked to do)
Still think this after the green bay game yesterday He stunk up the place look at his dismal record when he is within the ten yard line and how worthless he is in important games The interception was not the worthless qback
Tbh Skip Bayless should watch anything about football before opening his mouth. Acts like he can just say a player is bad just because his team let him down
thats when i knew we couldnt bullshit our way to the playoffs like the year before we had shurmur and a somewhat cohesive line smh we had fucking tom compton as LG and fucking remmers (who's original position is tackle) and an injured year 2 player at center neither was going to block anything leaving riley to defend on an island hopefully bradburry can clean it up a little and kline(please be average) can help the rookie and the young RT we need to draft another tackle this year idc we need to slowly replace Riley
Vikings always seem to drop that kind of L every year. They were trailing the winless Browns at halftime in 2017 too, but unlike Flip in 2018, Shurmur in 2017 made halftime changes that resulted in an easy W in the second half.
@@biglicker4473 Riley is due a pay increase next season, but he also becomes cut eligible. It'll be interesting to see what happens. Some people say he fits better into a zone scheme so his play could look a lot better compared to last season.
Could you do a video about if Tony Romo is a Hall of Famer or not, or if he was a good quarterback or not? I'm personally not sure if he's a Hall of Famer or not, so if you made a video on that, it would really help.

@@PK-vt6ed Waren Moon had all of those things and yet was still an exceptional QB Tony carried his garbage ass Browns Level team to become a pretty decent force to go against. A team that was middle of the pack which without Romo we would probably go 2-14 and 3-13 alot pretty much every single year. He was an exceptional QB and was way more clutch than ignorant fans think. His stats are awesome and if he was in another team he'd probably win a few super bowls. He was a monster and sacrificed his body alot hence why he became injury prone later in his career when his age wouldn't allow it. He's not a first ballot but he's definitely a HOFer to me maybe he'll get in 2030
The good thing is if you guys survive and stay into playoff contention until December then you’ll be fine, Nick Foles in December and the playoffs is god like and since defilippo hates running the ball and will most likely keep throwing it, it won’t be a problem for nick past December
It'll be interesting to see if DeFillipo is the problem. I never liked his play calling but Jags O-Line is better than the Vikings so it might not be so bad?
I'm from Washington and they were crying in their beer when Snyder traded him. Alex Smith gone and may never be back; McCoy hurt and out for the season. Picked up a QB who had been watching games on his TV. I really like Cousins and you never hear him say negative things about anyone. He certainly has every right to, especially after the way the Redskins discarded him the way they did. Thanks for the video. Too bad your not a regular on the NFL channels. Go Kirk!!!!!
I learn something new in every video so thank you for that. I literally had no idea jump calls were a thing. That is so cool and I can't wait to watch for them in real time this upcoming season. As for the closing monologue, that truth is applicable to many other things outside of football which I think is a reason people enjoy football so much. It is simultaneously both an escape from the struggle of reality and a metaphor for it.
Redskins fan, and I was a big Kirk supporter. I was definitely bitter when he left, but when he was a redskin he wasn’t the problem. I’m glad we’ve moved on but I think he can be successful
With as much film as you watched on the 2018 Minnesota Vikings, you can see why nearly halfway into the season Cousins began to get PTSD and feel phantom pressure. Can you blame the guy?? lol Oh and btw, gotta remember that Stefanski was calling plays from DeFilippo's playbook. Still doesn't excuse the bad pass play calls though against the Bears in Week 17, just figured it would be worth mentioning.
I 100%Agree we need to use our first round draft pick on a QB this year and send Kirk out the door he has everything great recivers we fixed the O line and Calvin Cook is one of the best backs in the league he just cant make good decisions under pressure
Wait... How did I miss that Kubiak is with the Vikings?! Um... This is gonna be a huge game changer for them. Kubiak the, sky-box sniper is going to come up with some seriously solid adjustments throughout games.
Kubes has done a lot with less, Schaub looked for a minute like a passable QB, Franken-feet and all. The Vikes will need a running game and that is where Kubiak shines. His zone blocking scheme allows for undersized guys on the line and when Kubiak QBs roll out, half the time you see wide open receivers. My best friend in the Navy loved the Vikes… , so for his sake I hope the Vikings finally get that Superbowl win.
I know you will most likely not read this Brett, but things like your explanation of the jump call in cover 4 is why I love this channel. I played football in Germany as a SS before concussions made me quit. We had a very simple playbook, mostly playing cover 3 or cover 1. Seeing how NFL defenses communicate and prepare in other coverages is really exciting and I learned something new today, that I can notice now when watching games next season. Keep up the great work !!
Personally as a Vikings fan I think that the o line is the main problem. However cousins has possibly the best skill position core in the league and he consistently doesn’t make plays.
Lol... You are so wrong. It's funny getting to look at comments immortalised like this from 3 weeks ago and now Kirk is literally carrying this team on his back again. Kirk has the 2nd highest career completion accuracy of all time and right now in the league, 2nd highest adjusted QB accuracy in the NFL. Riggs has been awful for most of this year so far and Cousins makes him look good.
Thank you so much for this video. I don't know how many times I had to try and explain to people that Cousins was NOT the problem last season. Everyone seemed to want to pick on him. Now I'll just refer people to this video making the conversations much easier. Skol!
Thank you for this Brett. I've hard plenty of friends who are Vikings fans claiming buyer's remorse. It upset me because I knew Cousins did a great job with what he had, it was just that he wasn't given a whole lot to begin with. Thanks for giving me evidence of that!
The way Brett said “dumba**” reminded me of Red Foreman from “That 70s Show” 😂. QBs get way too much credit and flak for wins and losses. It’s the reason I hate “QB Wins” as a “stat” (if you can call it that). I’ve always liked Kirk Cousins and I’ve seen him do a bunch great things wherever he goes.
M’eh. The same excuses could be used for any quarterback who failed to succeed in the NFL. I wished they’d have kept Keenum and Bridgewater - let them duke it out, and used the extra change on shoring up that Oline and/or defense.
Keenum ended up getting $18M/year from the Broncos and has proven repeatedly over his career that his 2017 season was a fluke. Bridgewater was hurt bad and got some $$ too. Combine what they made last year and it's only about $3M-$4M less than what Cousins made. That's hardly enough change to make a difference, especially since your QB play wouldn't even be as good as it was.
Thank you for putting this together. I'm a Dallas fan who believe it or not defended Cousins when he was in a Washington a sworn rival! The majority said he was overrated and overpaid, my response was well how many consistently put up 4,000+ and 25tds?!? Let alone with a revolving offense and coaches? Hopefully the Oline in Minnesota is improved, Cook stays healthy, they should be contending for NFC title, not just their division. Peace
Love these videos of you looking into a narrative and showing what's correct and wrong with it. You're honest with the criticisms but put in an amazing amount of work showing how things are always so cut and dry.
19:17 is it not Kirks fault that he missed Thielen wide open? He had the time and Thielen runs up the seem with room and turns around for an easy pitch and catch and chooses to force it to Diggs.
Keenum isnt a loser as well, players dont wanna play for a guy who cant win (the numbers prove it) and makes more money in one year than they ever will.
as a vikings fan this video made me really happy to watch because every player, coach, and manager on this team made moves in the right direction this offseason
Damnit I was about to do something important. It'll just have to wait 25min and 38 seconds which happens to be the length of this vid Brett just dropped! 🤣🤣🤣
I've always said that Kirk Cousins is top 15, and that his o-line is the reason he is considered bad. Also he won a playoff game against the saints, making the game winning throw.
Kirk Cousins can't beat teams over .500, but I don't think the 3 quarterbacks they had in 2017 would have done better with that O-Line. Especially someone like Kirk Cousins who isn't a very mobile quarterback, but if you're gonna throw that much money at him, you should make sure he has a good offensive line.
problem is alot of the issues we had last year that we blamed kirk for that was out of his control was something that was almost always the case back in his redskins days. had he had a proper team his so called cant beat teams above .500 ... might not even be a thing.
Kirk Cousins is legit. So happy you made this. People try to roast me when I claim he’s a legitimate Top 10 QB more often than not. Dude is good at football, plain and simple.
Great video. I've never had KC in my division. But I find it odd when the people who are more concerned with "fantasy" football than real football judge him so harshly. He's well above average as an NFL starter. He's intelligent. He works hard. But he's been surrounded by big failures at key positions everywhere he has gone. Matt Ryan essentially had a statistically equivalent season to his MVP season last year despite a defense that lost 2 pro bowlers in week 1 and both safeties and a Pro Bowl running back by week 3. Plus he lost his offensive line and was sacked a whopping 42 times while maintaining his stunning stats. And he drops to #94 in the NFL top 100. You know how many teams would die to have the consistency, and accuracy of Matt Ryan on their team? And look at Philip Rivers. While he's getting older, his falloff is much less than Drew Brees' falloff but he gets no media attention despite being a top 10 QB every year of his career. The problem is the sports media is centered in NYC with some presence in LA. Channels like ESPN are bleeding viewers because you can get sport scores, stats, and highlights on your phone and don't need them. So the result is we have a sports media that is all about drama to create interest. And a really media bias toward divisions like the NFC East. I'd probably rank Cousins in the top third of QBs in the NFL with Rivers & especially Ryan ranked higher. But these guys just don't get the respect they deserve. And watch this year as the Drew Brees nose dive accelerates. How long until people will stop ranking him as a top 3 QB? And look at Aaron Rodgers who has bombed the last 3 years yet he is almost always ranked in the top 2 despite him being a .500 QB for the past 3 seasons. Aaron doesn't get blamed when the Packers lose 50% of their games for a multi-year stretch. But people blame Cousins. Interesting.
Great video. Im really hoping the new Kubiak-Stefanski offense will really help him (and our o-line). I also like our first four draft picks a lot. Can see Kubiaks influence all over that draft. SKÖL😈
Hey Brett, Thanks so much for making this video. You, I think do some of the best work when it comes to talking about technicalities of football while also telling a story. I am from Minnesota, now living in SoCal and it's always great to watch the videos about Vikings especially but I watch all of your vids cuz they are entertaining and I learn about different teams and players and technical of football. Seriously, great job. I knew the issues were more about the Offense as a whole in general especially the play calling and Oline but thanks for giving a bit more specifics.
I have always been a Kirk fan, esp when he was at Wash, he really carried them on his back so many times. Makes you wonder how Kirk would've performed at the 49's with Shanahan in 2019 hey. Esp considering Shanahan wanted Kirk before they signed Jimmy G. I would've like to see these two together at the 49's, Kirk might have proven all the sceptics wrong.
I played QB in high school. My coaches were down my throat every play but that's part of being the field general. Problem was, every time I got a snap, if I even got it because the center wasn't good, my guards were already in my pocket, ends already beat my tackles and I had no where to go. We mainly ran triple option., our school was known for it, so the box wad always stacked,. I don't wanna say I was the best player on the field but I never really got to show how good I was consistently. I made plays. But just the 2nd game of the my last season aalone, was sacked 13 times. I understand Kirk and that's why he's one of my favorite players. He definitely would prove to everyone that he's a top 15,maybe top 10 QB if his oline would just help.
Great analysis. Love the explanation of cover 4 and how the bears adjusted on it. I love football and have watched it all my life but never really understood the schemes like that. Like how you showed how the Vikings were trying to fix their issues too. You changed my mind about Kirk.
Thanks for this video and your research. When Kirk was having trouble in Minnesota, I couldn't quite understand why. Then I saw that there was a change at OC. Pat Shurmer is who worked with Case Keenum to a that great season. He had gone to be head honcho for the NYG. Frankly, John DeFilippo looked better than he would with that newly cut SB ring. But it makes me hopeful for Kirk knowing Kubiak has been brought in.
Great analysis! I won't blame Kirk Cousins for every one of the Vikings losses. BUT what I DO blame him for is pretending to be an elite QB when he is just a slight above average QB. When you are being paid $28M GUARANTEED, you are NOT expected to be an average QB. You are EXPECTED to elevate everyone on your offense to a higher level. Even you, concede (@22:09) that Cousins is NOT an elite QB. What I blame Cousins for is SUCKING up $28M in salary cap space, so that the Vikings can't afford to sign any free agents. The Vikings could have and SHOULD have re-signed Case Keenum to a modest $6M-$10M deal and used the rest of the money to increase the talent of the team. The perception that Cousins can't win a big time game may be unfair. The story line that he is an average QB pretending to be an elite QB is very real. Every Redskins fan will tell you why the Redskins passed on extending him to franchise-QB-type money. My biggest criticism of Cousins is that: IF YOU WANT TO BE PAID LIKE THE MAN, THEN YOU HAD BETTER PLAY LIKE THE MAN!!! Much like Joe Flacco (who also SUCKED up so much cap space that the Ravens had to dismantle their once dominant defense), Kirk "Average Joe" Cousins is NOT a franchise QB.
As a Vikings fan i have one thing to say about the Seattle game and that is the blocked field goal lost that game coaching was horrible but the missed penalty on Seattle killed momentum and let Seattle takeover

@@clark2501 Exactly.
No, Tom Brady is the greatest!
Networks give you talking points, Brett gives you truths. Keep up the good work!
From the bottom of every Vikings’ fans heart:
THANK YOU!!!!
I'm just wondering why you expect great things? Is their something that points to improvement or are you just being optimistic/hopeful?
Our defense was top 3 last year despite how awful our offense was and the fact they had to carry the team almost every game. OL will be improved (nothing is as bad as Remmers and Compton). Our first four picks were all offense and all have promise. Scheme won’t be so terrible. With some semblance of a running game we are set to explode. We were still a half game from the playoffs despite everything that went so wrong last year.
@@justifiedego9779 Kubiak is working for us now in addition to everything that was just mentioned. I'm cautiously optimistic.
Thrggee .d That’s a great way to put it, cautiously optimistic.
Ya that call was dumb, and you are right about that game. Cousins can ball, he just has some of the worse luck
100% agree, this is year 2 now so there will definitely be some improvement.
Ppl bring up the roughing the passer call but never bring up the identical call on Rodgers from Kendrick’s. If they called that one might as well call the identical hit that just happened to be at a more critical moment.
@@rhyswallace2822 I forgot about that
@@rhyswallace2822 That one was a year earlier though, rules change alot.
This is hard to watch as a Vikings fan, but I’m glad see Kirk cousins getting his credit
I felt it was kinda therapeutic, especially knowing most of the issue was the coaching (the o-line personal isn't made for the type of pass pro they were asked to do)
Lorax it’s refreshing to see someone actually break it down so people can understand what is actually happening
@@selchertb2 I feel the same way. I just assume that people who put all the blame on Kirk aren't bothered to look at the whole picture.

Worst loss of the Vikings season was Buffalo... Hands down.
Hopefully Kubiak helps fix all these play calling issues.
thats when i knew we couldnt bullshit our way to the playoffs like the year before we had shurmur and a somewhat cohesive line smh we had fucking tom compton as LG and fucking remmers (who's original position is tackle) and an injured year 2 player at center neither was going to block anything leaving riley to defend on an island hopefully bradburry can clean it up a little and kline(please be average) can help the rookie and the young RT we need to draft another tackle this year idc we need to slowly replace Riley

As a Jaguars fan watching this has me terrfified that we hired Defilippo as our OC
Wow I didn’t even know, sorry for your loss
Wayne Flohr end of my beliefs of me thinking you would bounce back, Buffalo taking your playoff spot
I like the jags but y’all really messed up
The good thing is if you guys survive and stay into playoff contention until December then you’ll be fine, Nick Foles in December and the playoffs is god like and since defilippo hates running the ball and will most likely keep throwing it, it won’t be a problem for nick past December
It'll be interesting to see if DeFillipo is the problem. I never liked his play calling but Jags O-Line is better than the Vikings so it might not be so bad?
Wow Brett you would be a great defense lawyer! I’m a Cousin hater and now I wish him the best for 2019 lol 😆
This guys stuff is by far the best thing football breakdown stuff i've seen going on youtube.
Just watched and I 100% agree I always believed in Cousins
I'm from Washington and they were crying in their beer when Snyder traded him. Alex Smith gone and may never be back; McCoy hurt and out for the season. Picked up a QB who had been watching games on his TV. I really like Cousins and you never hear him say negative things about anyone. He certainly has every right to, especially after the way the Redskins discarded him the way they did. Thanks for the video. Too bad your not a regular on the NFL channels. Go Kirk!!!!!
About time! I was waiting for you to cover this subject.
You just earned a happy Vikings subscriber
Haha, same
Redskins fan, and I was a big Kirk supporter.
Can you blame the guy?? lol
Oh and btw, gotta remember that Stefanski was calling plays from DeFilippo's playbook. Still doesn't excuse the bad pass play calls though against the Bears in Week 17, just figured it would be worth mentioning.
Football is the most nuanced sport there is.
The ultimate team sport, for sure.
If you don't count the cheese roll
Remember when Kirk Cousins lost 3 game winning field goals in 1 game? Totally his fault.
Wow, I knew that deep down but seeing it all together and plays slowed down so u can see all those missed blocks and tackles, it's so true!
Cousins is the blame for this game against the Packers smh. This is the most likes I've had btw thx

And he's now the reason for losing against Chicago. This video need to be flagged for misinformation.
I 100%Agree we need to use our first round draft pick on a QB this year and send Kirk out the door he has everything great recivers we fixed the O line and Calvin Cook is one of the best backs in the league he just cant make good decisions under pressure
And now for 3 consecutive weeks, hes played at an elite level. This comment and the replies are way too dramatic smh

Love that you played "Good Things Fall Apart" by Jon Bellion in the background at the end! You have good taste, sir.
You forgot the block in the back vs the rams that they picked up after like a 40 yard gain by gurley
Coming back to this video in 2019 🧐
I know you will most likely not read this Brett, but things like your explanation of the jump call in cover 4 is why I love this channel.
Skol!

6:26 the ball is swatted out of his hands is it not?
Well it may have not have been his fault last year but it deff is this year
A big problem I see is that the quick two second route is not there and Kirk is sacked in three seconds.

Hell, yeah! A new video! Thanks for putting this one out for us Brett!

He won a playoff game. On the road. Against the 2 seed saints. In prime time. And the Vikings were considered dead men walking into the wild card.

All your subscribers: We love your work Brett.

Peace

Thanks Brett! If we kept case keenum instead we would've won maybe 4 games.
Keenum is mobile. That helps cover a bad o-line
Frank Laudicina True, but it wasn’t just the O-line, Keenum benefited from a running game that ranked 7th, in 2018 it dropped all the way down to 30th
Keenum isnt a loser as well, players dont wanna play for a guy who cant win (the numbers prove it) and makes more money in one year than they ever will.

As an eagles fan I hated playing against Cousins, w/a good O-Line he will pick your defense apart💯
Larry King Respect that all the way 💯
Great video.
SKÖL😈
Maybe not “the” problem, but certainly “a” problem. Just give it to Dalvin D: yeah, yeah, I know it’s the o-line that’s garbage
I knew the issues were more about the Offense as a whole in general especially the play calling and Oline but thanks for giving a bit more specifics.
please do a video on davante adams, i feel he is criminally underrated
Not anymore, he used to be tho. I see a lot of people giving him respect now
colin People underrate him because he has Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback
I have always been a Kirk fan, esp when he was at Wash, he really carried them on his back so many times.
Makes you wonder how Kirk would've performed at the 49's with Shanahan in 2019 hey. Esp considering Shanahan wanted Kirk before they signed Jimmy G. I would've like to see these two together at the 49's, Kirk might have proven all the sceptics wrong.
Thanks for such a great vid. Has a Vikings fan I could tell along it wasn’t all on Cousins fault.
Basically Aaron Rodgers goes thru that also. And defense doesn’t help either
Great analysis. Love the explanation of cover 4 and how the bears adjusted on it. I love football and have watched it all my life but never really understood the schemes like that.
Like how you showed how the Vikings were trying to fix their issues too.
You changed my mind about Kirk.
It’s about time you replace skip. 👌🏻
Real great stuff. Been preaching this all year - and for you to put it all down in a vid is just fantastic!
Did I just hear a Cousins apologist? :)
