hey ricky, just wanted to say thanks for the vids. you pretty much taught me mage knight (way back before lost legion) and convinced me to buy it. because of that and after a long journey of boardgaming ive now gotten lost in the world of war boardgames. awesome to see you playing and loving this!
Hi Ricky. Just been watching a 3 part documentary about Charles 1st. It's put me in the mood to bring out this game which I bought a while ago on the strength of you walkthroughs of the game. Your videos are excellent in every way I can think of. Born a catholic I think I would rather support the Roundheads. Weird to think that today's political system and monarchy derive from such long ago history. Thanks for all your work.
It was the Puritans that came to the New World and called themselves Pilgrims. Which is why in the Americas you have odd stuff like the Salem Witch Hysteria, outlawing Dancing, selling of Sodas, perpetual Work with 3 day weekends rather than going on Holiday. To quote a comedian "thanks for sending the best and brightest to get the party started (here in America).
Thanks for these vidoes, Ricky - they're great. This one looks like an interesting one and a nice change of pace / theme. Looking forward to seeing how you fare in Cromwell's shoes!
Hopefully this playthrough will help me understand English History. Everything up to Elizabeth I kinda of flows nicely, but then all this stuff happens quickly and you have Walpole and more stuff and Bobbies appear.
Just watching this again before my game tomorrow (ok, later today) so I can hit the ground running during my week off. This will be my 3rd game, lost the 1st, partial victory for the 2nd, who knows what might happen next.
After buying 2 other games based on your playthroughs (MK and Crusoe), I have a question about CN though this probably isn't the best forum to ask. Do you think CN has much replay value since you go through every event card in a game? IOW, since each game is similar to the last, differing only in order and dice rolls? It's still on my wish list; am curious what you think.
Bobby Bissett That's a fine question, and this is a common theme in states of siege.. My view, the replay value does not hang on the individual cards themselves, but in the countless combinations of orders they come out in. I would say it's analogous to asking if a d6 mechanic introduces a lack of replayability because you only ever see the values 1 to 6 :) Ok, that's a taking things to an extreme, but I have concluded that the high volume of permutations the deck-of-cards mechanic gives the game is a benefit to replayability, over and above a simpler mechanic with fewer permutations. Hope this helps !
Ricky Royal Thanks, it helps. Thinking about it more, with a semi-known (it's not like I'll memorize them!) set of all the bad things that are going happen, there's more room to try different strategies and not have them derailed by something that happens only every n games. Thanks so much for all your work in these videos.
Ricky Royal Just so's you know (and I assume you get Royal-ties, heh), my copy of Cruel Necessity just arrived a day ago. Am excited and skimming through this series again. You should do an episode on how to get your family out of the house so you (I) have time to play.
very interesting period for sure. Yes, VPG were all about in-printing and lower prices. Now it is not the same: they were at one point putting out a remaster of Cruel Necessity with better components. I am not sure who owns the rights to the game now though....
The board actually looks really nice when laid out. It is just heavier paper so, yes, a bit on the cheap side, but quite striking to look at, all the same. Refreshing my memory before playing again so watching Ricky’s superb play through yet again! Thx Rick!
@@BoxofDelights Yeah, I saw that, but it's release has been pushed back from 2020 to 'TBD', though there's actually been no real news on it since early to middle 2019. The new box art looks nicer, though.

Thanks Isaac :) Enjoy the hobby !!

My pleasure. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy the game! Which documentary was it ?

Just started the series, fascinating so far.
great great job!
complimenti!
Conceptually, I'm digging this, but it'll take a few more turns for me to form an opinion of play. Nice choice of game, RR.

Brian Parker Good luck Brian!
Is it still possible tu buy it? Thank you
not currently. A re-print was in the making a while back, but it seems to have gone quiet.
The re-print just came out
Best ever done was -7.... after the 3 decks. I take that as a win.
ha ! very nicely done sir !
There's an excellent podcast called "Revolutions" which has been covering the English civil wars - I highly recommend it.
interesting... I will try to Google it :)

Yes Charles wife was Catholic she was Henrietta Maria her was Henri of Navarre also at one point a protestant.
Correction calvinist.
Interesting time period. Gameboard looks a bit cheapish though.

Shame that this is 150 quid or so, if you can find a copy
they were working on a new edition
