- I've talked about a lot, but very rarely do I delve into the world of Speedrunning. Stardew Valley specifically seems to have evolved into quite the beast, with official and unofficial categories spanning just about every part of the game. Join me as we take a journey through all it has to offer!

I remember someone making a speedrun of getting caught digging through the trash by every villager and planed the best route timing the movement and daily routine of the NPCs in order to get it.

I'd love to see a Legendary Sashimi speedrun. You have to catch one of the legendary fish (or maybe insist it is the Legend if you want to make it super hard), upgrade your house to get a kitchen, then turn it into Sashimi (which also means befriending Linus to get the recipe). Got the idea only because I once turned a valuable fish (not a legend though) into sushi by accident!
BlaDe did it for his Summer 2 CC run (He used Legend for it XD)

My own little speedrun I want to do is what I like to call “the speed run of trans your gender” basically you must get 4 stars with the wizard to open up the shrine of illusion and change your name and gender/appearance

i am not a speedrunner and in fact i am quite bad but i enjoyed this idea so thoroughly that i went ahead and gave it a shot so...36:10 is the time to beat lol (if i remember i'll reply again with a link to the recording of my attempt when it finishes uploading)

I don't know if it was intentional, but using music used often by channels like summoning salt is such a good little detail for those who understand the reference.

I’ve only ever watched videos abt speedrunning from summoning salt before so I was momentarily disoriented lol
If they want to bring it full meta they'll use some Keith Mansfield or Francis Monkman and throw it all the way to Salt's biggest influence, Jon Bois.
What's the music used during the soup bit?
I just love that this game is still relevant. It's so fun, and so chill. I don't speed run but I do like to try and be efficient every time I play. I have yet to get a perfection run, but it's a comfort game, the chocolate of video games when I need to just curl up and decompress.
And I appreciate why and how it's still relevant. No season pass, no microtransactions, just a guy offering free updates for years while making the game incredibly mod-friendly.
CA becoming rich from this game makes me very happy.
I did perfection back when the last big update came out. Having done it once, it's not so intimidating now. I'd say finishing the museum is probably the hardest part, because sometimes certain artifacts just will not drop. Getting maximum hearts with all the villagers can also be tedious. Here are a few things I'm going to keep in mind next time I work towards perfection:
-don't miss any villager birthdays, and always give them a loved gift
-don't miss the Luau festival
-don't miss Queen of Sauce on Sundays
-don't miss checking the Traveling Cart on Fridays and Sundays
-always pick bat cave, Ginger Island has a free (far superior) mushroom cave anyway
-stay of top of catching all of the unique fish season to season, and don't forget to fish on rainy days
-start farming oak resin, maple syrup, and pine tar as soon as possible

For cooking: Make sure you grab all QoS recipes and get maxed hearts. Then check the wiki for a list of all the necessary ingredients. Get them all (use magic bait/Pierre's list/Ginger Island to get it all). Buy 3-4 fridges from Robin, fill them with the stuff. Then just click all the recipes one by one. There's also an option that shows you how often you've crafted/cooked something so you know which ones you've already done.

Dart game isn't too hard. Remember that triple-20 is the highest result. You need to learn to evaluate where the centre of the circle is - once it's over the trip 20, you start pressing until the circle is small enough to only cover triple-20. It also helps to be patient. There's no time limit, just wait till the circle gets to where it needs to be.

The website "Stardew Checkup" (just google it) and it's sister site "Stardew Predictor" help a lot with keeping track. The predictor also allows you to hunt geodes for specific stuff. It's kinda cheaty, but ultimately you decide how you want to play the game.
Personally, the one thing I dread on every perfection run is the "Simon Says" puzzle on Ginger Island. It's why I have only completed perfection six times...

Just find a game and category you like and go for it! You don't gotta be good, just chasing PBs and personal progression is immensely satisfying

Nah but for real though I'm glad you've been enjoying the videos Salmence! Doing the random wheel items not only gave me a chance to grow in the stardew space, but also allowed me to get better at speedrunning as a whole and grow my own little community! seeing myself in a video like this gives me goosebumps lol

Just today I watched Haboo make "speedrunning the alphabet" and I loved it, specially when the roulettes made his chat angry.
It is fun to see tha chat suffering instead of the streamer for a change, there should be balance, not only entertainers should boil in heavy emotions.
this is an interesting level of meta, where one set of people watching the player becomes entertainment for the next set of people who watch both the player and the watchers

"Thick Junimo run" sounds like it could be the joke name for a speed run where you get the Junimo plush from near the playground
I'm not such a fan of stardew speedruns. But I love minimum in game time runs (ie a day counts as a day whether you stay up until 2am or go back to bed at 6am). I love watching people wring every possible but of useful time out of that game.
Challenge runs are a whole different animal. I do them in My Time at Sandrock (current PB is 145 in-game days to complete the main quest and roll credits) and it's hectic trying to optimize production to have everything you need when you need it.
Closest I've come to doing that in Stardew is the community-center completion challenge; best I've done is Fall 14.
I too think that that's the more approachable way of "speed"running the game. Something feels wrong about sleeping until winter, exploiting dirt farming for winter foragables and later on sleeping for entire weeks at a time so you maximize keg output.
Too bad that when it comes to perfection, 2 years is literally the minimum (Queen of Sauce is the deciding factor) and it's not really too hard to do. Sure, you need to plan ahead and money will be non-trivial, but it's doable.

i really like blade's TAS runs! The focus tends to be on preparation for the run rather than the run itself, and you can predict a lot of the rng elements using a computer to do frame-specific things. Plus, it's a nice option for people who can't physically sit and play the game over and over (either due to disability, time constraints, etc)
The best games can be played multiple ways and have emergent gameplay, and Stardew has all of those and more. It can be relaxing, it can be competitive, it can inspire inventive ways of tackling problems. Concerned Ape may have created close to a perfect game.

Seanie did a lot of the stuff on the list and for some reason Salamence only mentions him once, questioning why he’s even on the leaderboard for one of the runs.
meme speedruns for any game have such a special place in my heart, especially in older games that have bored playerbases who just want to see how much silly stuff they can pull off. shoutout to skurry's hollow knight grass% run

Animation canceling kinda works on console, you just have to tap the button again at a specific point in the animation for it to start over and if you keep timing it right it’s significantly faster than just holding the button down. Just mash the button a bunch till you find the sweet spot
Thanks for all the content you made. I didn't know what I was doing really with my first year so I'm kind of treating my second year is my first year and your guides have helped a lot. But the nice thing is I don't really need to get everything done in one year so it's pretty relaxing
when i first started playing stardew i was like speedrunning defeats the whole purpose…… then i played enough and now i get it LOL

Thank you for the quick explanation of animation cancelling. I have been starting to use it in my personal playthroughs and was wondering why I was sometimes not doing the action. Apparently i was cencelling too fast and didn't know that was a thing
SamanthaCoffin is at the top of a lot of these leaderboards. It seems like she could be famous like Haboo - I find it strange that she's not.
Those of us in the scene know Samantha is elite™️, one of only a handful to get sub 3 hour CC, vanilla CC WR holder, handful of others, and generally an all-around wonderful person. TH-cam presence does a lot to warp perception/they returned to the scene a little bit later and so just not well known outside the speedrun community but they’re the best!
Using that Summoning Salt music was a great touch.

Speedrunning was my introduction to the game or my introduction to playing and loving the game so I enjoyed this thoroughly as a nostalgia fest (it was years ago I got started)

Kinda surprised you didn't mention hutharvest%, which basically boils down to "Get the Junimo Hut, put a box of raisins in it, plant a crop after that, then watch the Junimos harvest the crop. Time ends when the fruit or veggie leaves the screen."
Then again, I just made up the category on the spot.

You should do a really relaxed multiplayer playthrough of the game where rather than completing the game, the goal is just to have fun and relax with friends. Y'all just play until you're bored. Honestly I just wanna watch more vids of you playing stardew lol
I'm glad people enjoy this game in many different ways including speed running. I like to watch a good speed run once in a while. I tried my own speed run a couple years ago, time to finish Joja membership with only income allowed from fishing. I did it by summer day 2. I could probably beat that time pretty easily, but don't ever want to do that again.
The seaurchin can be made also with the trash hat, way easier to obtain than the living hat as you can just get the fishing rod and fish it at the fountain near the community center

You can speedrun most games if you know how to do certain things in the game.
There's a youtube called Blade who does all sorts of speedy run-like stuff in Stardew Valley. Recently, he married Penny in year one, before the sping dance. There's another video of his about "Donating 60 items to the museum in day one."

i have a gimmick run that i've been playing thats basically a marriage% run for Sebastian specifically but with a bit more theming, i call it: "GAY🖤EMO farm". my basic goal is to marry Sebastian as fast as i could, i also watched all his cutscenes because i wasn't timing myself. i made my character be a guy and wear all black, to truly fit the name. after i married him my new goals were to 1. complete the community centre, 2. have a chicken coop of only void chickens, and 3. (most importantly) be the best damn husband this side of Ginger Island! i played on the hilltop farm to try something new but the run would probably be better with better fish chances and more space for crab pots for sashimi. i think if someone wanted to do a marriage% run thats a little more silly this could be fun.
here’s a terrible run idea for posh%: unlock the bus, get in the casino, purchase the statue of fortune, wait for harvey’s birthday to get a free regular wine

I still would like if there was a leaderboard for some of the categories ordered by in game time rather than IRL time. That is, after all, the timing method grandpa sets for you for evaluation (though he does extend your eligibility). It would give some of the odd challenge runs a more competitive scene (though Bla_De would almost certainly dominate seeded, especially if dynamic seeding is allowed)
I think that would be a really fun spin off, especially for some of the more intricate runs like posh% and perfection!
@@salmence100 Yes, though admittedly, a few of them are going to have super high chances for ties (like, if you have sewers unlock as a category, that happens the morning after everything is handed in), so tie-breaking methods would be needed (like *when* during the previous day did you turn in the last thing that made it possible). Oh, and with sewers unlock, I don't think anyone's going to try and beat BlaDe for dynamic seeded glitched because the grind he did to get enough geodes and other drops is frightening. I might consider TASing stuff like that, though

So.... The segment on posh% really interested me and when I had a free chance (one hour ago) I attempted a run with very minimal planning, just wanted to see what the unplanned hurdles I wouldn't see coming would be.... I did infact learn of many such hurdles such as only being able to buy one jajo development thingy a day, that joja opens at 9 and that you need to see the community center cut scene to start joja route. The unfortunate part about the run was that I GOT THE WINE DURING THE WINTER STAR, I legit expected nothing to come from the run so I had music over the game audio the whole time (and I think my recording just turned off mid way through? not sure I swore I pressed play) anyway. The file for my game says I only spent an hour 6 minutes in the world... which would be third on the category list, I don't want any recognition for this run obviously it's disqualified and the pure amount of winter tilling isn't the **most** entertaining for me so I'm not sure if I even want to try more runs of this, however. If this run catches anyones interest I do think posh% has a lot of progress, my run with next to no planning for 5 minutes from world record for Pete's sake! I think the way you'd do it is to start tilling for joja bus in winter, depending on what you prefer you can try to get an emerald from gem nodes or the quarry usually has one, could be worth running up there on spring 1 to check with a screenshot before you continue the run. As for the wine I'd suggest wait for winter star to pass, if you get nothing get as many trees as you can afford from peiree (spring or summer) and wait for that and fruit bats to get you enouh for the artisan bundle. Note it'd probably be worth it to get the bus from the community center too if winter star doesn't work out. Anyone, goodluck anyone who was interested enough to get this far.

@@slwrabbitsIt's the same odds as the tea set, but you can also get gifted an emerald from the same item pool so technically a good result is twice as likely from winter star as the tea set.

I'm going to do some research and see how hard it is. But at least with good luck it wouldn't take an hour. So this seems very doable.

Why does the seaurchin% run not try to get the garbage hat? Seems like you could check a garbage can on the way to the beach
You have to open at least 20 garbage cans for the hat to appear, so you would have to go out a minimum of 3 days just for the chance. That plus having to wait for Willy's shop to open means that living hat will be faster. (I feel someone has timed out checking 20 cans too but I can't remember who or when that happened)
Can you use macro keys to time the animation cancelling for different actions? Thinking of the old Logitech G15 keyboard

For the “posh%,” the consistency can be achieved in a different way, as being married to Leah guarantees a wine on Winter 28. Is it super useful? Not really, but I think it’s neat

for the sea urchin hat speed run couldnt an easier one than the living hat be: trash can hat? while u run to the beach to get the aquarium you could check jodis and haleys house (maybe lewis too) and hope luck is on your side. chances are higher than the living hat anyways and seems just as optimised
