For comparison, the Italian ocean liner _SS Michelangelo_ 's construction: Planning started in 1958. Launched in September 1962 for fitting out, and completed in April 1965. It had 45,911 GRT. It used to take _years_ to plan and build ocean liners, which had to be built to withstand most weather out in the ocean, unlike cruise liners.
For a more modern example, _RMS Queen Mary 2_ was ordered November 2000, laid down July 2002, launched March 2003, and completed December 2003. She has 148,528 GRT, and while she's dwarfed by many cruise liners, she is the longest and largest ocean liner ever built. They also used more modern processes to build her.
Like they said at the end, the 10 months is only drydock time, they were planning and building it before they had the drydock, and they'll continue working on it after it's floating. It's a very similar duration of drydock time as RMS Queen Mary 2, and the drydock time is expensive.
And it takes the US to built a similar displacement vessel 14 years and 12 billion dollars.
Take a trip to kvaerner masa yards in Turku Finland. They build ocean liners in slices from end to end. Finished state rooms get slotted in like blocks, so their commissioning time is even less once the ship is out of dry dock. I got to consult on the theatres for Royal Caribbean's new class of ships in the early 2000's. We did projects in Germany, France, and Finland. The Finnish yard was by far the most impressive and efficient.
I love the part where the guy explains that "safety first - safety is our priority". Where in Italy, safety is always in last place with 600 deaths at work since the beginning of the year alone, and where even at Fincantieri in Monfalcone there have been strikes after serious accidents and the unions have already reported serious incidents of non-compliance with safety. First for them is profit, then maybe they think about safety. And only after pressure from workers.
I hope you are able to tour the ship after they finish the interior components. that would be incredibly cool

Wow as a person who has to make 2-3 trips a day to the hardware store during any project….. that’s a lot more successful planning than I’ve ever even dreamed of achieving!
If I ever had a son, I could only wish he was as curious and passionate about observing, learning and creating like Adam. Adam gets excited about the technical world around him. Meanwhile other people might never desire to bat an eye
I was hoping this video was at Fincantieri in Monfalcone. I lived about 45 minutes away for 6 months and was in Monfalcone often. I watched them build the Regal Princess while I was there. It's crazy how fast they're built.

To correct Adam - the air lubrication system is not "brand new technology". It is for Princess, and may be for this shipyard, but it's been on cruise ships that were built in 2014 or even earlier...
Whats really impressive: One yard crew set a record in November 1942 when it built the Liberty ship Robert E. Peary in four days and 15½ hours

I'd like to know about their LNG safety protocols. All kinds of places on that ship where leaking LNG could collect and, well, I can't even begin to imagine the disaster that could be. And ~10 months from design to launch is incredibly impressive. I assume they still have a couple of months worth of finishing the interior, decorations, &c?

bubble science is a thing. its amazing that many tiny holes in the bottom of the ship are used to force air out and provide a cushion for the ship to ride on, thus reducing friction and increased efficiency. also helps with control of fouling.

Considering I believe this one is liquid natural gass, they're basically no worse than a hotel with some shops, and a theatre. Considering a lot of electric grids burn LNG as fuel in their boilers its no worse then most day to day human life per say in that regard. Like it's still excess, but also not much better than resort hotel excess.
They'd be 0 emissions if they could use nuclear power though 🤔👀

@@danzo5521 Some people dislike cruise ships because of pollution from exhaust fumes and waste dumping as well as seeing them as frivolous energy wasters. These people would view the series as supporting something they consider bad.

@@mousemade1 this category of ship is entirely different in that regard. No diesel. LNG is amazingly clean, and its exhaust contains no soot, no particulates, and almost no NOx or sulfur emissions. Add in the amount of wasted heat that they're able to recuperate with using the heated engine coolant as a heat source for showers and pools, using Boyle's Law for the A/C with the phase change of the supercooled LNG, as well as a super efficient hull and new (to cruise ships) azipod technology. This ship is AMAZINGLY efficient. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sun Princess becomes the most efficient and cleanest cruise ship in history.

Modular construction techniques were first used by the Kaiser shipyard in World War Two when they built the liberty ships.
Though for a second that the plan from Adam was like let's build a cruises ship

I would love to get a view of the finished engine room, assuming its not some kind of proprietary secret tech stuff that can't be shown, also the sense of scale you get when you're standing next to the ship and we see the entire length boggles the mind.
I would also like to know why nuclear power isnt an option, when it seems to work very well for both Submarines and Carriers, is it a cost issue or a "people being paranoid about nuclear power" issue? or maybe something else entirely I haven't considered?
They probably don't want the possibility of a nuclear-powered vessel being entrusted to the command of an idiot who panics under pressure, or being under the care of an untrained bridge crew. Which, unfortunately, has happened before (Costa Concordia, MV Dona Paz and MV Vector). You cannot control who operates a ship once it has been commissioned. Better to use conventional power.
Because those Navy nuke powered ships are protected 24x7 by guns and planes and other navy ships so that NOBODY steals the nuke reactor and turns it into a dirty bomb. Would you really want that much destructive power to be sailing around unprotected?
Security issues are real but nuclear power is so expensive a nuclear powered cruise ship could never earn back the cost. Modern cruise ships like this are typically all-electric with multiple generators instead of one or two big engines.

Let's assume 9 month are 270 days, that makes 222tonnes delivered per day, everyday for the 9month. In Europe a heavy truck could maybe carry 16tonnes, a regular around 8.
Correction, the displacement is 60k tones, the weight is 37000 tones. So it's about half of that per day...
10 months?! Pah, we laugh at that here in the UK, where it takes us 20 years and triple the intended budget to build a railway that doesn't go anywhere!

Got to see a Nimitz class nuclear aircraft carrier built. And they are built in a modular process. The CAD design is broken into small sections that are built in parallel, and when finished lifted in and welded to the neighboring sections.
I'm betting this cruise ship was built the same way. It just makes sense from a speed of construction sense.

Misleading title. The remaining portions of the ship was assembled at that dry dock after a year of the first portion being built in Romania? And no interior. Is this Gung Ho? Will they be rewarded for their efforts?

Cruise Ships are my personal Hell, way to much people on way the less space cramped together. I hate that, when i go on a vacation i avoid bedbunker hotels like the plague.

Kind of makes you wonder why it takes the Legacy Aerospace companies, Years and Billions of dollars to build something a Fraction of the size and until SpaceX, Only had to last for 1 trip!🤔🤬
I have done some work in Aerospace, even Built, Tested and Qualified some Power and Signal Interconnect Connectors for The ISS, so I understand there are Some valid reasons for how much it costs to Develop, Test and Manufacture Aerospace components, but.....Really?🙄

They banned them cause the ship is to big to fit. Not cause of the itty bitty amount they pollute. The money the people bring to the harbors out weighs it politically. Bermuda is dredging the inner harbor so ships can come back in.

I don't know fellahs, I can't seem to answer the question, why? Why build a floating communal latrine and send it around from port to port collecting and spreading pathogens? Yeah, the engineering is absolutely astounding and the amount of highly skilled effort put into these projects is mind boggling, but that nagging, why, just won't let me enjoy the cool boats. All I can see is armies in the dark ages marveling at how you got the disease over the walls without a catapult or a cow, and they paid you for the service.
I'm not a cruise person. If I get on a big ship, it'll be _RMS Queen Mary 2_ , to experience the transatlantic crossing that people used to do to get across the world.
