Great little video series! That Canon sure put up a good fight. I agree with the feeling of Pentax cameras. I was mostly a Sony/Minolta shooter until I got a Pentax K1ii this summer. It's just a joy to hold and use!
Thanks mate! Yeah the 7Dii is no slouch, especially when it comes to capturing fast moving subjects. That being said, the K3iii can preform equally as well but with more comfort & better handling in my opinion. I keep meaning to try out a Sony but have yet to get round to it, the menu system layout looks scary on some of the first gen mirrorless Sony cameras! I can imagine you K1ii is an absolute joy not only to use but the files will be insanely good too!
As a hobbyist, I needn't please fickle clients or nail every shot. What I truly care about is the joy I'm getting from using the camera and the quality of the results I'm getting if I put in the necessary effort. On both accounts, I would gravitate more towards the K-3 Mark III. Its sheer handling is a source of joy, and the DNGs I'm getting from it when I've done my part are as good as any I've seen from an APS-C camera.
@Needacreate I agree, when I'm shootingfor myself it's not even a choice, it's always Pentax. I feel like they are literally the photographers camera, be it a K5, K3, K1 even the Pentax 17 made me feel creative! Where as the 7Dii is great for workhorse sports photography, for all the ways I personally prefer Pentax the Canon is a great tool for paid work.
Such a true statement. I only make pictures with my family, won't even edit most of them. The joy is in the photographing. I hope Pentax understands this market exists.
Great comparison, Lee. Concerning the burst rate test, was the Pentax maybe set on focus priority instead of release priority? That may slow things down a bit, I reckon.
Thanks mate. Yes I like set my cameras up for focus priority rather than fps as it suits my style. I also have the 7Dii set up in the same way. Here's how I had both cameras set up for this shoot th-cam.com/video/H9X2-02XyPQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for your thoughts, Lee. Great photos. I haven't shot with a Pentax, but I like generally like Canon ergonomics. Not sure if I would choose to buy a &D MK2 in this day and age.
@martinhommel9967 Thanks mate. Yeah i enjoy how the Canon DSLRS feel & preform too. I understand there are many modern cameras that out spec the 7Dii but I still think it's more than capable when it comes to the photography side of things. And I mean when it comes to a capable weather sealed setup to shoot in similar conditions as seen in thus video it fairs pretty well, not to mention you can pick these up dirt cheap these days. Is it going to compete with the likes of an R7 + RF 70-200mm I'm not sure, it depends on how well the photographer knows the camera & subject matter as to the results. But I'd still say overall it's a buy in 2024 and beyond, if for nothing else to learn & enjoy the craft that is photography 📸
Though I shoot other brands, I keep coming back to Pentax and the one pf the main reasons is ergonomics. I have tried Canon but I never really jelled well with its handling. If Pentax was not existent then I'll probably go with Nikon, Sony, or MFT.
@ShutterKnack I must say the 7Dii ergonomics are very good for me at least. But I think anyone who has picked up a Pentax DSLR can attest to just how good they feel in hand.
@@LeeIveson I have never tried the 7dii myself but thats good to know! I have only tried the 5d line and the Nikon counterparts. I very much prefer the Nikon over the Canon full frame DSLRs. That said, the K-1 is hard to beat for my use. It is the tiniest out of all the three. In terms of robustness, I think Nikons take the crown. They are just tanks.
Just goes to show how much effort the engineers at Ricoh put into the K-3III. Hopefully they continue making cameras & lenses for a long time. The K-3III is incredibly good, but I imagine that a future K-3IV, if it ever appears, will be much more refined.
When I saw the first images you compared, the K3iii images looked cleaner than the Canon images. With the speed of burst on the K3iii, I'd be interested to know whether you had focus priority or shutter priority as well as whether you had any other processing features enabled like highlight or shadow compensation, or lens distortion adjustment.
@LeeIveson focus priority will always reduce the fps. The other setting I was curious about was the horizontal panning mode in the AFC. I don't think I've tried it, because I mostly photograph wildlife and they're not as predictable, but for airshows, motor races, or motorbikes, it should help. I'm also curious whether AFC tracking is different in live view. I don't use live view myself, because I like the viewfinder though.
@LeeIveson PS I agree about the ergonomics of the Pentax cameras. I've tried some mirrorless cameras and found them cramped (though the main thing I disliked was the EVF).
Fascinating comparison. I would love to see you test the K3 III with the DA 60-250. That is a tremendous lens. Also, were the cameras using the same SD cards?
Thanks mate. The DA*60-250 looks stellar when it comes to image quality, but for this style of photography I can't rely on the old style SDM they are just too slow to focus sadly. Of course it can be done but it's less than ideal I've found. I was using identical SanDisk extreme 64gb 170mb/s cards in both cameras (I actually filmed some b-roll shots of the cards but forgot to include in the edit 😅)
Lee I would be curious as to your opinion on the raw files, colour and dynamic range, I had the 7Dii, 5Diii and the K1ii, I found with Canon shadow recovery was very poor compared to Pentax. I did sell all my Canon gear and move over to the OM-1 for wildlife, I kept my K1ii along with Irix 15mm and 21mm lenses as my goto astro and landscape!!
I have found the same to be true of the Canon 7Dii at least, it has it limits when recovering shadow details. I've found the files don't hold up nearly as well as any of the Pentax cameras I've owned (K5,K3,K3ii,K-70,K3iii). I did make some sort of attempt to show this in a video a while back. th-cam.com/video/vSxn0L_7M-U/w-d-xo.html
I've never tried a Pentax. I am Canon from day 1 (for digital DSLR) in trained/accustomed to my 7Dii and 5Div. They are like extensions of my arms. I may have missed it, but how well does the Pentax save it to memory card? When shooting RAW, how long can you shoot until you hit the buffer, if at all? The 7Dii always seemed respectable in that regard. I hit the buffer on my 5Div (well before I do on the 7Dii) but the file quality from the 5Div sensor keeps me choosing it.
The 7Dii has a much better buffer, In saying that I've never hit the buffer on either camera as I tend not to shoot that way. Interesting that you also own the 5Div, I can imagine the image quality if far better than what you get from you 7Dii?
