Kids that are serving time for crimes should not be in same facility as foster kids that just have no family. Rest In Peace Cornelis

“Lakeside academy” just sounds like a place straight out of King’s novel.

A kid that throws food should get lectured about why that is wrong, maybe has to write an essay about it or get grounded for a day. Perhaps even sent to bed without dinner for that particular evening. Throwing him to the ground, restraining him for over 10 minutes and ignoring his plea that he cannot breathe? Standing next to his limp body for over 10 minutes without taking immediate action to resuscitate and calling an ambulance? That isn't just neglect, that is straight up manslaughter. I'm speechless... Rest in peace Cornelius, you won't be forgotten!

Why are children in the foster system being placed with children who are "serving time" at a juvenile facility?? Not having a family isnt a crime last time I checked.

Why did they have to throw him to the ground for throwing a sandwich?? Come on people give him dignity and respect. What he did was wrong, but tackle him to the ground?

For-Profit = lowest pay for employees, lowest amount of food served, making employees work as long as possible without training.

Why are children being sent to “foster homes” that operate like prisons? As far as I understand he wasn’t there due to troubles with the law, so why are these kids who need a stable, warm home being treated like inmates?

Cornelius' friend seems like a really well spoken boy. I hope he gets a hand up and doesn't become just another statistic.

And they wonder why kids grow up rebellious and angry at the world... This NEEDS to STOP! It shouldn't have EVER happened to begin with! I'm praying for justice.

This is not uncommon, I worked at court ordered addiction facilities, they did not train staff they shoved them in jobs at low pay. People who wanted to help, but were not ,trained accordingly, because it was all about just getting the funding. So sad. I returned to school, got my degree and tried to make changes, but they fought me, and a new director the6 hired to keep constant low started limiting toilet paper, and stopping groups that actually helped them. I left defeated as I could not do it anymore. Went to a residential private pay facility and started training more in trauma to help others. I see and hear this happening all the time.

"I can't breathe" hits a lot different these days. The phrase is enough to put tears in my eyes.

This reminds me of a job I worked for as a "day mom" for a proctor and group-home company. I left because I mentally and emotionally couldn't keep up the fight against the system of that place; a system that turned kids into free slaves for greedy proctor parents who mistreat and abuse them. I had kids run away from abuse who were either sent to juvie or were literally never even looked for. I saw kids get tossed and traded and officials completely ignore the testimony of the kids while eating up whatever garbage people would tell them.

Restrained for throwing a sandwich?! As someone who worked at a residential group home for 5years, you only restrain a kid if they are a danger to themselves and others. When you restrain, you ONLY do it with 2-3 staff and you NEVER put your body weight on the child. When they say, “I can’t breathe,” you AUTOMATICALLY lighten up.

The part that said “ he was moved to a new house 100+ miles away from his community and friends and family” made me whisper to my self “it sound like he was traded...” ( meaning for profit ). The boys needs and wants where probably disregarded to gain another body to bring some profit...

I was at facilities like this. One girl was thrown against a wall and got a concussion because she wouldn't stop singing when they told her to stop. Some places are good, but those are far and few.
