I fixed rings that GOT STUCK during pregnancy!

  • One mother had to have her ring cut off after her fingers swelled up during pregnancy. During this process the ring was badly mangled out of shape.
    I documented the repair of these rings which included reshaping, unsoldering, sizing, resetting diamonds, tightening stones, polishing, and rhodium plating.

    Last year my husband and I were expecting our first child together, a son, and my ring would feel a little tight, but it was when I was at my 8 to 9 month of pregnancy, that my ring got stuck, and I was freaking out, because I couldn't get it off, but thank God, with lots of lotion/water, it finally came off. I couldn't wear it anymore after that, and was sad, but after our son was born in May 2020, months later, my husband bought me two new rings, and had all 3 rings resized for me to wear again. He made me so happy, because we've been together for so long, and been through so much, and finally have a child, we couldn't be more blessed.

      @@malloryknox6802 my mother could not wear her rings again, till 15 years later, cause she lost some weight. Mostly is just fat and water in the finger that affects, during pregnancy you can get bloated and swollen, that will come off, after that is just loosing the baby fat, but there is a good chance you will get 1 size larger, in rings shoes, gloves, because of the growing hormones, funny enough I have never had children but I make the same size as my mother. Ever generation can be larger than their parents.

      A trick to getting a stuck ring off is using dental floss! You can force one end under the ring and out the other side, then tightly wind the floss around your finger in front of the ring. Then you pull the end that you pushed under it, and it pushes the ring along the floss and pops it off!

    • @medotaku9360
      @medotaku9360 3 ปีที่แล้ว +135

      You lose them all the time. The truth is that they're actually pretty cheap so it's not a massive problem if they fly out when polishing.
      But you try to avoid that as much as possible.
      (The tiny diamonds are rarely more than 10 dollars each)
      And the big ones actually cost less than half what you pay for them. But you don't really lose those.

    My mom's fingers kind of grew around her ring set (she wears three rings, two on one hand, one on the other hand). For some reason she just didn't take them off as her fingers got bigger. She's been wanting to take them off for awhile but just didn't know what to do with them after getting them off, so they've stayed on her hand for 40+ years. She has a very modest set: two plain bands and the engagement ring is a single stone. She doesn't even remember what metal her rings are made of (she picked them out, not my dad 😅).

    I did it, watched the whole thing! This was a great video, i can’t tell you how much this just did for me. It’s been quite some time since I’ve made jewelry, 15 years since I stopped and at that point was only making bracelets and small, easy things & 20 years since my last rings and pendants. Long story short I basically lost access to a studio and didn’t have the majority of my own tools. That plus being in college equaled no more!
    I never really thought I’d get back into it, as you know it can be expensive!! But I’m going to dammit!! Watching you polish those rings at the end there, I fully understand that feeling and haven’t felt it in years! I need to make some shiny!!
    So thank you my friend, you’ve reignited a smoldering ember that I’d forgotten and I hope you can understand what that means to me. You’re heart is in your work and I hope you’re well compensated for it. Thank you again, I’ll watch all the rest of your content for sure! Kick ass!🤘🎃🤘

They haven't increased in size in 5 years either, guess I was lucky. Fortunately her rings were only half eternity bands and not full eternity. I love your work station. I have always wanted to learn how to do this. Way back in my family I had a great great Uncle who was a jeweler and had a shop on Philadelphia'Jewelers Row. Although we never met, I would have loved to watch this guy work. I was thrilled to see your restoration on this set. I could watch you all day. So glad to have found you. Thank you for sharing.

    I didn't know rings could be separated after being soldered together. I gained some weight after being married for a couple years and needed my rings resized. My engagement ring is 1/8 kt marquee diamond on a very thin gold band (was my husband's late mother's) and we picked a jacket for it that has some accent diamonds but a more substantial band. We took it to the place we bought the jacket at to be resized and they said it was impossible because the band was too thin, I left in tears because they also commented on how small it was even after I explained that it had sentimental value.
    I went to a more reputable local jewler and they fixed it in a week and said it was routine.

    Does resizing the ring reduce the quality, strength or value of a ring?

    • @angelwhispers2060
      @angelwhispers2060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way he does it No. the metal is reheated, annealed properly and quenched so that there is no loss of strength in the ring.

  • @Lis422

    I don’t like the last step of conservation, but I do love everything else ❤️
    During the steps I thought, why didn’t he changed the length first. The result is perfect 👌🏻 But to be honest, I still don’t know. Why did you add the material later?

    • @heididavison816
      @heididavison816 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guess would be he didn’t know what size it was. So he needed to restore the ring first, then he knew his client wanted a size larger than what he had. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    I'm curious why you soldered the rings before sizing them? Would there be some sort of integrity issue if you hadn't done that first?

  • @sarahslayton1851
    @sarahslayton1851 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Question is it better to have the rings separated or soldered together

    • @Affranchie
      @Affranchie 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think there is a right or wrong here, it mostly depends on if you want to wear your wedding band alone, if your rings have sidestones that can shave against the bands, if one ring will help the other one stay in place and stop it from spinning...

    • @lorrilewis2178
      @lorrilewis2178 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Multiple rings wear against each other, so there's that to consider. I prefer wearing one ring as opposed to stacking rings. Besides, it's more comfortable.

    • @zoeykillah
      @zoeykillah 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My engagement ring looks like 3 rings together and i absolutely hate it. It looks like a halo engagement ring with two bands, one on top and one at the bottom. I asked a jeweler if it can be made smaller and it can’t. I guess it’s just preference for the most part. But idk why anyone would want one huge piece on their finger.
