Bassano è la città del monte Grappa ( English version below …) e della grappa: una magnifica meta ai piedi delle Alpi Venete che combina memoria storica, arte ed enogastronomia. La sua storia è stata plasmata dal fiume Brenta che la attraversa in prossimità del centro storico: qui le due sponde sono unite da un magnifico ponte in legno che è diventato il simbolo della città. È il leggendario Ponte Vecchio un tempo il luogo del doloroso arrivederci degli alpini diretti al fronte
Le attrazioni più famose di Bassano del Grappa sono concentrate all’interno del centro storico, che si può agevolmente girare a piedi. Il centro nevralgico della vita cittadina sono le due piazze principali, Piazza Libertà e Piazza Garibaldi .
Il Ponte Vecchio è un concentrato di genio architettonico, romanticismo, memoria storica e suggestione. Si tratta di un ponte di legno coperto che unisce le due sponde del Brenta nel cuore della città; la forma attuale risale al Cinquecento. Non è solo bellissimo ma è anche molto funzionale: merito del suo geniale progettista, lo stesso Andrea Palladio a cui si devono le ville venete più belle e più famose al mondo. Fu proprio lui a voler costruire il ponte in legno, convinto che l’elasticità di questo materiale potesse contrastare l’impetuosità del fiume. Nonostante diversi danneggiamenti dovuti alle acque e ai bombardamenti, il ponte è ancora lì; per la sua importanza strategica durante il successivo conflitto mondiale fu fatto saltare in aria dai partigiani, e ricostruito una volta finita la guerra.
Sul lato opposto, si trova un altro caratteristico locale da non perdere: si tratta anche in questo caso di un locale storico, ma le memorie evocate da queste stanze sono ben più allegre! Stiamo parlando della Grapperia Nardini, il locale che un tempo fu sede della più antica distilleria d’Italia (aperta nel 1775. Anche se Nardini è sinonimo di grappa, nella grapperia del centro la bevanda più bevuta è il “mezzo e mezzo “, l’aperitivo tipico di Bassano a base di rabarbaro e rosso Nardini con una spruzzata di seltz e una scorza di limone. Un’altra specialità della casa è la tagliatella, a base di grappa, acquavite di ciliegia, arancia, spezie ed erbe.

Bassano is the city of Mount Grappa and grappa (traditional liqueur ) : a magnificent destination at the foot of the Venetian Alps that combines historical memory, art and food and wine. Its history has been shaped by the Brenta river which crosses it near the historic center: here the two banks are joined by a magnificent covered wooden bridge which has become the symbol of the city. The legendary “Ponte Vecchio was once the place of the painful farewell of the Alpine troops heading to the front.
The most famous attractions of Bassano del Grappa are concentrated within the historic center, which can be easily explored on foot. The nerve center of city life are the two main squares, Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi.
The Ponte Vecchio is a concentration of architectural genius, romanticism, historical memory and suggestion. The current form dates back to the sixteenth century. It is not only beautiful but also very functional: thanks to its brilliant designer, Andrea Palladio himself who was responsible for the most beautiful and most famous Venetian villas in the world.
Palladio wanted to build the wooden bridge, convinced that the elasticity of this material could counteract the impetuosity of the river. Despite several damages due to water and bombings, the bridge is still there; due to its strategic importance during the subsequent world conflict it was blown up by the partisans and rebuilt once the war was over.
On the west side of the bridge there is a bronze statue depicting a young Alpine man leaving for the front ; in memory of the popular song “Sul ponte di Bassano”. You can pay homage to their memory by visiting the small museum housed in the basement of the Taverna al Ponte (also called Taverna degli Alpini), a characteristic wine shop located on the west bank.
On the opposite side, there is another characteristic room not to be missed: in this case too it is a historic room, but the memories evoked by these rooms are much happier! We are talking about Grapperia Nardini, the place that was once home to the oldest distillery in Italy (opened in 1775). Even though Nardini is synonymous with grappa, in the center's grappa shop the most drunk drink is the "mezzo e mezzo", the typical Bassano aperitif made with rhubarb and Nardini red with a splash of seltzer and a lemon zest. Another house specialty is “Tagliatella”, made with grappa, cherry brandy, orange, spices and herbs.
