Extinct EPCOT: Universe of energy-1989

  • No doubt about it, the original Universe of Energy was all about the dinosaurs! An EPCOT original that embodied the original theme of the park, it was long on education and short on thrills, unless you count the dinosaurs. Honestly it was a very technologically advanced attraction that was actually very effective in storytelling. But… times and tastes change and modern EPCOT can’t be bothered with such things. It was one of those attractions that we wanted to stay; we just didn’t want to ride it. How about we all take one more ride for old time sake!

I'm one of those who enjoyed the original Universe of Energy and never went on its replacement. As a teen when EPCOT opened, I liked the fact it was free of Disney characters and sought to be more "grown-up" in its presentation in contrast to the Magic Kingdom attractions because it was born from a mindset that still expected us to mature as we grew older which has sadly disappeared today with everything being dumbed down. I still enjoyed the Magic Kingdom rides, but EPCOT in attractions like UOE and Spaceship Earth carved its own identity that made it a separate experience altogether. No such distinction between the parks exists today.

This has been my favorite ride at epcot since I first went to Walt Disney World in 1988 at the age of eleven. I always liked how each of the rides told stories about man's progress which in the case of the UOE was man's advancements with different types of energy sources. My favorite part about the ride was seeing the dinosaur diorama which is why this was my favorite ride at epcot. Well R.I.P. UOE you will be missed.

This was propaganda sponsored by Exxon… not very forward thinking, the “universe of energy” discussed almost exclusively fossil fuels and focused the narrative on oils limited reserves and the need for continued exploration which is celebrated in the show. Other sources of energy are barely a footnote at the end of the show… you could say 1989 was a different time but there had already been congressional hearings on the causes and impacts of global warming which are not discussed in this ride. No negative to coal and oil is even mentioned in this ride except that we will eventually run out. We are told solar may become viable within the next 100 years yet we are shown an image simultaneously of a functioning utility scale solar field. I guess that’s what you get when you have Exxon build the ride for you. Pretty genius of Disney, I’m sure Exxon paid Disney handsomely for the privilege of building this megaphone of misinformation in the most popular ticketed tourist destination in the country for an audience of children. 😂 wow
