First harvest! 🌽

This was so exciting. The day had finally come. The tassel had turned brown so I harvested it. Too soon! It wasn’t ready yet. Only 5 kernels, not enough for cornbread or elote. I definitely needed to wait about one more week. The good news is there is more growing thanks to the birds and squirrels, so I will try again. The 5 kernels tasted good though, very sweet. 🌽

Looks more like improper pollination rather than being immature. The cob also looks small suggesting nutrient deficiencies. Corn likes a lot a lot of nitrogen. Corn is wind pollinated and when planted in few numbers it struggles to pollinate so it is best to hand pollinate. This year is my third attempt at growing corn and after everything I have learned I have full sized ears and cobs that are mostly to entirely filled out.
