    Good advice on planting asparagus. To those watching, do it the way Jenna shows you and you will have plenty of it for a long time to come. To me it's one of the most rewarding things you will ever plant. I'm anxious to see in spring if my asparagus made it through. I started some from seed last year. They were just little guys going into fall/winter. I do have a purple variety ordered for spring and just started seeds from the wild asparagus I have growing out by my woods. The wild stuff is very impressive, huge and purple/green. I think, at some point I may order up another hybrid variety to throw in the mix too. I dedicated a large space just for asparagus. Love the stuff. Having a spot just for it, I figure I can keep weed competition down etc.... Worst part about asparagus is the wait. Oh, and, I challenge you to wrap darn near anything in bacon and tell me it's not good. Take care.

      Thanks BB! I agree- I love my asparagus. It is an incredibly rewarding crop to grow. It's hard to beat asparagus wrapped in bacon... though asparagus is pretty much delicious any way you prepare it (and yes, bacon makes everything delicious). I hope your asparagus made it through-- it's tough stuff so chances are good. Take care!

      ru Grew thanks, he’s always eager to help in he garden. He especially liked hauling away my weeds in his little dump truck 😄 And, as much as I love my veggies, bacon makes almost everything taste even better!

      Growfully with Jenna yes and it doesn’t do well. We don’t get cold enough to set the crowns well. But I planted some anyway trying to find something that works here 🤷‍♂️

      Arkansas Woodcutter that’s disappointing! If I ever come across a variety that’s supposed to be better suited for your growing conditions I’ll let you know!

    I plan to start asparagus this season in my new garden since it takes some time to harvest. So, thanks for this info! Interestingly, the Jersey varieties are still coming up heavily in searches and in the seed catalogs I have for 2024. I think I’ll be going with the Millennium variety, which is said to perform better than Jersey anyway. How is your asparagus bed doing so far, Jenna? Update video? Thanks again, from zone 6a, formerly 5b!

      Hi Jessica- You're most welcome! I had the opportunity to grow and taste AsparaBest before it was released (while it was still being trialed in the University of Guelph's breeding program) and was really impressed with it-- so I had to add it to my own garden!

    I have planted my bare roots in with my strawberry patch will this work or will they compete? Same growing zone as you.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This will absolutely work and is a great use of space! The key is to make sure that you provide adequate nutrients for both crops. Thanks for the great question!

  • @reality....
    @reality.... ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So we are in the same zone and I think like me you have clay soil. If i dig a trench into the clay, wont it make a pool of water that would probably kill the asparagus? also, I planted it for the first time. 1 year roots and its been a month and they haven't come up. Any advice? Thanks growfully awesome Jenna.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If your native soil is like mine- yes it will. I suggest amending the planting site first with compost and or composted manure and/or building up the planting site so it sits slightly higher than the surrounding area. That being said- my asparagus was REALLY slow to emerge this spring. Yours could still pop up.

    • @reality....

      @@GrowfullywithJenna thank you for the tips!! So i dug up one of the root crowns i planted and it had gotten the root rot. :(
      I feel like the rest probably did as well. i ordered more crowns and will put them in compost 6-8" above my clay soil.

    I am in Cincinnati OH and trying to create a food forest in my backyard. I was wondering if I can plant asparagus now, or should I wait until early spring? Any advice would be appreciated!

    • @GrowfullywithJenna
      @GrowfullywithJenna  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hooray for backyard food forests- this is awesome, Mike! I have planted seed grown, potted asparagus transplants in the fall with great results. I've not planted bareroot crowns in the fall (only the spring), but my gut says you want to give them plenty of time to get established before the ground freezes and/or it gets super cold & wet. I'm afraid they might rot or heave otherwise. What form of asparagus are you looking at planting?

    • @Mikewashe
      @Mikewashe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GrowfullywithJenna I am thinking either purple asparagus or Mary Washington. I think waiting is probably the best bet also. I am gonna get a space prepared for them and feed it with a bunch of compost so maybe by spring it will have a good microbial environment to get them an early boost.

      Yeah...that's a little suspect. Unfortunately the mislabeling of varieties is rife in the gardening industry. I'd just be curious to know what it actually is.

  • @princessleah187xx4

    They need to cultivate asparagus seeds to they don't require 3 damn years for a harvest. That's ridiculous.

    • @GrowfullywithJenna

      It is annoying to wait, but since the plants will continue to be productive for decades it seems like a fair trade off.
