It's always been wild to me that the most visceral and graphic descriptions of violence are ignored while these crazies lose it over any mention of sex. God, we Americans have issues.
I also read Night in 8th grade. Yes, it was gruesome, because the holocaust was fucking gruesome. My English teacher was a Jew, and her grandfather survived the holocaust. After we finished the book, he came to class and showed us his tattoo and talked about his own experience. Then we went on a field trip to the museum of tolerance. It was a very depressing, but amazing, unit. When youre like 12, youve heard of the holocaust and probably think it was bad, but its nebulous. Reading Night and meeting Mr. Filowitz helped my classmates and I to see the true horror from a more human perspective.
We had Where the Red Fern Grows read to us in grade 6 and there is a graphic scene where a kid falls on an axe and dies and another where a dog is mauled by a wild cat. That definitely disturbed me quite a bit, as evidence ld by the fact that I can still remember those moments more than 20 years later. I can't imagine any of these books mentioned are any worse.
I dont understand how the hell we let conservatives concern troll about grooming and pedophillia when they are utterly silent on the hotbed of that kind of stuff is in their churches, and amongst their political representatives.
because regular people have unconscious prejudices about sexual minorities and will jump on board when the argument is framed in this fearmongering way
It goes like this: Kid learns about abuse during sex ed. Kid comes home tells their parent that the prist molested them.. parents blame sex ed for brain washing the kid against the church. Priest goes untouched, school gets hysteria.
Their plan is to redefine "grooming" to mean "when gay people exist"; because they want the focus to be on gay people and NOT on Republican politicians, a great portion of whom are pedophiles.

I think "Chester the Cat" is probably supposed to pay homage to the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland (but she didn't want to use that exact character), and that is based upon the supposed idea of cats grinning in Cheshire, England because of all of the milk and cheese factories there. I doubt that she intended people to associate "Chester" with "(you know)" when they heard the name.
no the christian reactionary tradition is to say that sex-ed is grooming and then let children be clueless and manipulable and get abused or make bad choices all throughout their teenage years.
I appreciate you both so much. I wish i had a book to read about my sexuality in school. These books are for teenagers who are marginalized, made fun of and may not have a happy home to express who they are. Having a book does not create 'gay', it helps gay/queer kids come to terms with who they are and can save a teenagers/child's life.
not just that, the book is basically a crash-course sex-ed for gay people since schools only give hetero sex-ed, so basically Tim's argument is that hetero sex-ed is okay, but gay sex-ed is grooming. Just a very common hetero-normative rhetoric that uses people's prejudices to marginalize sexual minorities.
The problem is that the right wing narrative, backwards as it obviously is, asserts that leftists and their propaganda are creating LGBTQ people. They don't need any proof. They just repeat it and that's enough.

Leftists: Friends are overrated anyway
Emma is my birthday twin, and I love and appreciate her a great deal for a host of things. This is one more item to add to the list 🙌🏿
In 8th grade we read "Night" by Elie Wiesel. That is FAR more gruesome than any LGBTQ+ book
@@ChewyThomson but the worse books mention a gay and gay things. We cannot have that.

In the Senate & House of Representatives, you're damn right. It's projection. Every. Single. Thing. Is hypocritical, disgusting, shameful projection.
Well I sure don't I make sure that every time that statement is thrown my direction that I throw it directly back at the person saying it. I always state that it is projection when these accusations are made without evidence or cause

@@SteveGellerMusic mmhmm. It's not like they didn't know how to rhyme. It's an odd choice.

Even if that mischaracterization is true, I don’t think it’s inappropriate for teenagers to know what gay dating culture is like. They should know what being gay is like and how to do it safely if that’s who they are. This kind of education protects children from abusers when they are kids and ensures safe habits in their adulthoods.
