I am SO glad Holly is getting as much of a kick out of Jonathan's paprika thirst as I did when I first read it. Last year's Dracula Daily birthed a billion paprika memes

I got really excited because I never realized Dracula had so much homoerotic and feminist subtext, but then immediately disappointed because I never realized Dracula had so much racist subtext god damn

Love Jonathan getting invited over to this dude's house and the first thing the count says when he gets there is "By stepping through this doorway you hereby agree that you are knowingly and of your own consent entering this household and agree to be held responsible for any subsequent loss or injury of person that may occur as a result of your stay."
And Jonny being like "oh boy howdy don't mind if I do!"

3:41:23 Same energy as in My Immortal where Dumbledore shows up like "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU MOTHERFUKERS!"

Another one of those things that for *sure* wasn't meant to be as funny as it is: Dracula's carriage driver just being Dracula with a fake beard

1:04:50 I really liked you pointing out the sheer amount of "picturesque"'s 'cause it kind of got me thinking about the use of the term in visual culture - I'm more familiar with it's use in like, context and analysis in anglophone Canadian art history as an art history student in Ontario so I'm not as familiar with it in literary things BUT my understanding of the word as used in a lot of 1800s English and English-descended Canadian contemporary art and art criticism, specifically in tourism and travel focused things, "the picturesque" is sort of about the idea of beauty in landscapes and scenery but specifically with a layer of a sort of 1800s white british paternalistic idea of "wildness" or "nature" (which goes back into Jonathan's paternalistic and belittling view about the local people he sees around in his travels) on top. As you talked about a little later, it's difficult to tell how much of it is supposed to be on-purpose commentary or just a product of the time, but it's kind of fun to connect these ideas to help with thinking about it!
If any of that makes sense LOL sorry I'm not the greatest at articulating stuff like this, but I also just wanna say I really adore your public domain story reading streams!! They're so fun 'cause like, it's like all the good parts of your middle school english teacher reading a book out loud to the class (hearing it aloud while following along and having discussions about historical contexts and specific phrases helps so much with comprehension for everyone involved I think and it's very fun) without any of the bad parts (being in a middle school english class), i think it's pretty awesome

I knew listening to Holly read anything was going to be great, and Dracula is certainly an interesting concept, but I was not prepared for what the original story had in it.
