Great memories and awesome you won the halfway contest! I won it with my dad one time years ago and if memory serves me, I think it was on a DC-8!!!
This is your last chance to go “back in time,” and see what old United was like. Admittedly not the best showing with those seats, but I love flying them because it reminds me of a time where United had a REAL first class and what was called “Connoisseur Class”! What a joy it woulda been to be a businessman in connoisseur sipping on champagne reading a physical newspaper.
I flew connoisseur class from Dulles to London and it was more than enought. It wasn't fully flat but it had 2-3-2 on a 777 so there was plenty of room. There was a big recline and a ton of leg room with a leg rest.

Thank you sharing this video of the 777 going over to Hawaii.😊 Yes, out of Los Angeles the trips to Hawaii are nice. I am glad you went in to the United Club early in morning before the crowd came in. I see the configuration here has backwards seats. Well, the 777 cabin configuration that I flew on is before this configuration. The were the 34 older cabin sests in First/Business Class and they were all seated forward.😊

And yes, the Cabin Crews for many of the Hawaii flights are senior in seniority. Many cabin crew members love flying these flights to paradise. With my former airline here, I have flown with very nice senior F/As out of Los Angeles to Hawaii but mostly from my former Chicago Base!😊
Your observation with the reason why the airline wants to still have the slightly older 777s, is for that vacation revenue!!😊 You are right about Hawaii"s paradise place that people want to come their to be on the beach in Honolulu.😊
Sorry!! Ot should be to come "there" on vacation in paradise not their which was close to the end of my three comment. Typing and thinking about what to say are not the same speed. ☺
I flew this 1st class config between IAH/SFO. Some were complaining about it, but I was happy to be there as the other option is mainly just the regular small-body 737, basically! I was grateful to have a lie-flat option. As you know, the plastic cups are required before takeoff- You will get glass later on lol! Great vid as always Patrick, and I’ve been watching since about 1k subs!
Patrick, I just wanna say I really love your channel. I discovered about 3 months ago and have watched many of your videos. This united 777 is interesting, most 777 with domestic configuration is the oldest 777 entered to service in mid-late 90s, and it’s been retrofitted with this seats Also it’s like an old school style of untied, the IFE available only in first class like 747-400
Me being someone whos only been on 2 trips in july of 2023 i took a couple flights down to new Orleans on southwest and on my way back we stopped in houston iah and when i saw the massive fleet of united was amazing

Halfway to Hawaii game has been a United thing for decades -- I remember them doing it from the 90s. They were more formal about it as they used to have an actual entry form that FAs gave out with the Hawaii Agricultural Declaration forms. On the high density 772s....United has always had a subfleet of their 772s in this configuration for Hawaii...they were even delivered as new that way (shh...I secretly miss the 2-5-2 coach configuration)
United always does a halfway to hawaii game I think on their Honolulu flights.I flew united to Honolulu once for a school band trip from LAX in 2005 I remember them doing it and someone from our group won.
I flew one of these IAH-HNL and I tied with the only other player of the halfway game so we both won gel pillows. I use it all the time now! Since my 777 had wifi, even without being connected, I was able to see GPS for our location to accurately estimate it based on the flight map and FR24 data.
I see these planes a lot out of Dulles. I book my travel way in advance so when I look at a route, let’s say IAD to DEN, it will show only narrow bodies. I look at the same flights only a few weeks away and a lot of times one of them will be switched out to one of these 777’s. I always book that one. They aren’t the best but they beat the hell out of typical domestic first class. PS…..I won the half way to Hawaii out of SFO one time. I got a bottle of pretty darn good champagne. That was probably around the time you were born.😂 Great video as usual.
Definitely better than the other domestic first class products. Although I’m still excited to see Polaris introduced in these later this year. I also don’t know what I’d rather have, the gel pillow or some good champagne!
If you are flexible with the dates, you’ll find a wild range of fares year round, sometimes over $1000. Just keep playing around with it and you may get lucky!
Flew United first class on a free ticket Chicago to Honolulu in 2011 on a 777. Completely expect the modern international first class, you have no idea how disappointed I was to find that crappy old style first class cabin on a 10+ hour flight. If I had chosen anywhere in Europe, it would have been real nice.
Patrick, you are certainly a man that talks with his hands; it's a bit amusing cuz I'm just the opposite and really don't talk with my hands. Not making fun of you, just one of those interesting differences people have. You're a very likeable guy so no worries. Always an excellent video from you. Your seat neighbor should be thankful you're not like Josh Cahill or Noel Phillips who record and talk throughout their flights which I naturally find to be disrespectful and just down right rude/obnoxious. I am very confident you are an extremely polite and considerate vlogger and really says a lot about your character. That French Toast looked rather sad. Can't compare to my homemade French Toast made with Texas toast, vanilla liqueur, Vietnamese cinnamon, fresh ground nutmeg and of course a dusting of confectioner's sugar and I also use those white ceramic butter warmers (with a small pitcher like ramekin sitting atop a pedestal holding a tea light candle) for warming the syrup. :-) As always, you do a nice job on your videos. 9.400
Congrats on winning the 1/2 way game. That was impressively close to the actual time. The backward facing seats must be quite horrible and disorientating during takeoff.
Idk I kinda like the backwards facing seats. Maybe I’m weird but I pick them whenever I can. They’re also theoretically safer if there were ever to be an accident 🤷♂️
I mean sure that could be one logical reason but the probability of an accident in itself is pretty insignificant; although, giving the age of that aircraft, maybe a worthwhile consideration after all lol. I would personally just find it rather disorientating to be facing the opposite direction you're heading in, especially during take off and landing. @@PatrickSheaAviation
17:34, Really, the plane that is 29 years old don't have wifi? That's strange. Last March, I flew United airlines, Boeing 777-200 (N215UA, 23 years old) from Houston to Honolulu, they have inflight wifi for a 7 and a half hour medium haul flight, which I able to use the in flight wifi and it work.
Ive flown this flight in business and economy multiple times iah-hnl for work. I'd never pay for the business class as its too outdated plus the rear facing seats. I rather sit in the back. I need them to do away with this configuration for the price plus lack of lounge access. Thanks for another great video
The economy seats have no personal TVs on the domestic 772-nonERs right? I flew IAD-LAX on one of the domestic 772ERs (usually a non-ER, so I got lucky) and got a screen despite being in poor class. It was as good a screen as UA offers aside from maybe their A321s, so I wonder if the screens in first class on the domestic ERs would have been better.
@PatrickSheaAviation all the non ER 777HDs don't have screens in economy, and the NEXT program only applies to getting screens on narrowbodies unfortunately
The LAX UC is my favorite of the handful I've been to (which include DCA, IAD terminal C and ORD terminal B). My only issue is that the gate for my flight back to Baltimore was gate 83 or something, so like a 10-minute walk away. Not fun!
@@PatrickSheaAviation while you’re in these beautiful places, might as well generate multiple videos & ad revenues to pay for your adventures & widen your audience & sponsorship potentials.
It’s easy to complain about the 2-4-2 configuration as it totally lacks privacy but it is still a very comfortable seat. A middle seat in that cabin is far, far, far better than any coach seat when these planes use to fly long haul from the US to Europe and Asia. 16.5 hours in that seat, even if a middle was great in comparison.
If Disney ever decides to launch an airline to complement their cruiseline, I imagine that's what the premium cabin would look like, plus a few rodents - hopefully, not live ones 😅 - here and there, as the cabin maximizes profits, and that's what Disney is all about, charging you through the roof for a second rate experience.
That’s an interesting story to follow. I think we will have to wait and see what JetBlue decides but they’ll need aircraft and slots if they wanna stay for the long haul
Done that SFO-HNL many times in all classes but nothing beats Polaris! Premium plus is slightly uncomfortable for me and my lower back, economy is doable but not more than 5+ hrs. Haven’t flown since last February so really having withdrawals right about now! Gonna be trying Delta next!
20:29, Really? Wow, congrats for getting the United airlines pillow. Hope your pillow is good and comfortable to sleep on the plane, even though it's a 5 and a half hour domestic day time morning flight to Honolulu. On my flight from Houston to Honolulu last March, I think they play games for the passengers for the 1st winner to get the pillow in 1st class, I am not too sure because I am flying in economy class at the very rear end of the plane.
Hawaii or the South Pacific sounds like the perfect niche for that seat. I hated it as an International Business Class seat. The best thing United did was to create Polaris for international travel.
Too bad you went to the LAX United Club on a rare, cloudy day. The outdoor space has a great view of the Hollywood sign! The parking lot isn’t the star of the show, lol!
Great video, Patrick! The footage of the gorgeous Hawaiian coast was amazing. I do wish that US carriers would up their soft product game. It's kind of embarrassing. Sigh. Btw - I've started watching Masters of the Air on AppleTV. It's a follow up to Band of Brothers and The Pacific and is about the American WWII pilots. I'd be curious to know what you think. So grateful to those heroes!
I’ll have to check that show out! As for the soft products, they are improving as we speak. Just looking back a few years you can see major differences
$325 for a 1 way flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu on a 5 and a half hour flight is little expensive, but that's okay. When I flew United airlines from Baltimore to Honolulu via Houston last March, it's $250 and it's cheap, considering the 1st leg is a 3 and a half hour and the 2nd leg is a 7 and half hour flight and it's worth the price.
You had a cut on your thumb and have to take care yo... Another awesome video again... Is UA going to replace those Domestic First/International Business?
They dont fly this configuration on International. Just domestic. They wont replace the interiors on them. They will be retired in a few years since they are UA's oldest
That would be a hoot. Although Floridians have their own beaches that they love. People in the middle of the country need their way to escape their snowy winters!
I don't understand United's transparent curtains. Imagine if you're trying to get some sleep in a dark cabin, and you have that glaring light from the galley.
Thanks so much for the video. This happens to be my least favorite aircraft UA flies, I frequently get this aircraft from IAD-LAX and it's brutal in economy on a 5.5 hour flight. Even with 1K, very rarely if ever get upgraded on that route
That’s unfortunate! Fortunately out of SFO, I get the Polaris configuration much more frequently. Only had this one a couple times, and never gotten my CPU
Temu sponsorship! now who wouldn't be happy sitting beside you filming things? lol air vents? #check 'the *slightly* tropical pouch' (cause ya doesn't quite scream Hawaii eh) cabin was ok TBH so ya not quite retro chic but retro-there-you-have-it i mean for barely 300 bucks, right? hope you had a nice stay
Old school is being very generous . Anyone that would pay a cash fare or waste points on this dilapidated cabin is out of their mind . Eight across in business class? If it’s not direct aisle access for every seat it’s business class in name only.
Of course, that is an old plane, but for a 5h domestic flight, it is rather comfortable with a fully flat bed. I mean, in Europe you don't get even recliner seats on 4,5 h hour flights from central Europe to the Canary islands in business class, just standard economy seats with an empty middle seat. So even that 8 seats in a row full flat beds is a huge improvement over European Business Class. I flew from HNL to Chicago 9 years ago in a United B777 and they still had recliner seats in business class on this 4400 miles flight. What I really do not understand is that even on such a long flight you don't get lounge access in the US, why that???
Totally agree that it’s a great seat given the flight, especially at the price point. US lounges have a major over crowding issue, so even without allowing domestic passengers, the lounges are still packed full during busy times of day
In Feb. 2020, I had gotten lucky and was able to fly in economy on a United 777-200 (also my first time flying on a wide-body airplane) from SFO to HNL because my original itinerary was from American from BUF-ORD-LAX-HNL, but my flight out of Buffalo was delayed an hour which caused me to miss my connecting flights and instead had me going from BUF-ORD-SFO-HNL and having me fly United to get me to HNL. There was no seat-back entertainment on the 777 and you had to pay to use the WiFi, but you were welcome to go to the back galley and ask for extra food or drinks because the flight was half full.

Polaris is definitely the way to go. We aren’t far from an all-Polaris 777 fleet as well
That guy was definitely going to Hawaii with his mistress
Ha! Love the conspiracy 🤣
I’m flying out of Houston to Honolulu in 2025 with the domestic 777. Hoping for the newer ones with TVs in economy.
I do know they plan to renovate these thing but no clue when that’ll actually be done
You need to fly lufthansa A340! please!
I did it a few years ago!
again!
Have you done STARLUX yet? Doing it on October.
Oye I’m trying! It looks incredible!
Hawaii or the South Pacific sounds like the perfect niche for that seat. I hated it as an International Business Class seat. The best thing United did was to create Polaris for international travel.
Backfacing seats. Feeling nauseated just thinking about it, as I'm wickedly prone to motion sickness. 😢
That may be tough. I actually think they’re more comfortable.
Too bad you went to the LAX United Club on a rare, cloudy day. The outdoor space has a great view of the Hollywood sign! The parking lot isn’t the star of the show, lol!
That’s awesome! I’ve only been there when it’s IFR or night time unfortunately
Better than a SWA flight! 😂
I won a bottle of champagne for the halfway to Hawaii game going home
Ha! That’s awesome!
I like Temu
I think the 767-400s have the same interface on the IFE screens… weird given that they’ve been refurbished.
That is weird! I haven’t flown United’s 764s but maybe I’ll have to add that to my list
You had a cut on your thumb and have to take care yo...
Another awesome video again...
Is UA going to replace those Domestic First/International Business?
Thanks man! And yea these will be gone sometime soon
They dont fly this configuration on International. Just domestic. They wont replace the interiors on them. They will be retired in a few years since they are UA's oldest
@@johniii8147 Good to experience once and that's all...
Still waiting for a potential Miami -> Honolulu service come on Hawaiian or American give it to us!
That would be a hoot. Although Floridians have their own beaches that they love. People in the middle of the country need their way to escape their snowy winters!
@@PatrickSheaAviation some people would prefer the pacific island feel than a Atlantic peninsula
@@nonstops_aviation fair enough. Would definitely be interesting
@@nonstops_aviationwhat about those Caribbean islands?
@@SurvivorQT maybe people don’t got passports
what happen to you thumb, with the bandage/band aid/plaster
Ha… got a bit too comfortable dicing onions
Great review mate.👏👏. I don’t know how they can call it first class when really it is premium economy. 🤷🏻♂️
Thanks! It’s definitely for the niche vacation markets. At least it’ll be gone soon
I wouldn’t call a lie-flat seat premium economy
What was it like to take off and land like backward facing lol
It’s a ton of fun! I always book rearward facing whenever possible… because why not!
Fly to Guam in the normal direct flight
Where did you get the music at 23:00
It’s all from Epidemic Sound
Interesting. I'm flying into Honolulu on Polaris Class ticket and out on one of these.
Well I can say you’ll enjoy Polaris for sure! At least you get to fly this product before it’s gone for good soon
I don't understand United's transparent curtains. Imagine if you're trying to get some sleep in a dark cabin, and you have that glaring light from the galley.
Yea, it’s tough. It has to do with visibility (post 9/11) but still can get frustrating at times
Ughhh. I flew the SFO- HNL and it was so awful facing backwards.
Interesting. I find it fun and unique sitting backwards on flights
I am very upset at United for having 2 4 2 for their first class. That's more like coach. Delta, Hawaiin is better.
Definitely. Gotta find the Polaris flights
Not ordering from Temu as I have seen bad reviews here in the UK.
Great video Patrick and yes I hate it 😏ok if there’s just the two of you on a window side
Thanks! Agreed
These planes see far more economy passengers, so the business class was largely left alone, but they should be gone soon anyway
US lounges have a major over crowding issue, so even without allowing domestic passengers, the lounges are still packed full during busy times of day
United puts all the busted flight attendants on that side of the service
They also use these out of IAH
E komo mai!
