- A compilation of the absolute sickest, funniest, and most disrespectful pauses in Super Smash Bros!
Pausing the game during the killing blow or after a sick combo and pausing the screen on a taunt is the perfect way to apply maximum disrespect to your opponent! For even more BM, take a snapshot while the game is paused! But be careful, pausing the game in tournament play carries a penalty of stock loss if your opponent asks for you to give up a stock, so make sure you have an extra stock/your opponent is fine with you pausing!

I always interpreted it like, if you pause on last stock, on like a killing move, if you couldn't possibly SD before they die, it's fine.
FGC has the Inevitable Defeat Rule:
"This is defined as when a player has legally won the round or match (i.e. landed a move that will kill the opponent) but pauses the game before the game awards the round won icon, will still be awarded the win. The most common occurrence of this rule is when Player 1 lands a super on Player 2, but the super animation is a grab and the damage isn’t awarded till the final hit connects, but the opponent has legally lost the round. If there is a dispute over whether the move would have knocked out the other player, a tournament official will unpause the match, see the result of the action, and proceed from there. If the attack does not kill the opponent, then the mid game pause rules are in effect."
based on the wording of that rule, though, it does seem slightly distanced from smash, where you technically could be an idiot and run off the stage and lose before a star KO finishes...
but as the OP said/implied (i think), it’s often reasonable to assume they won’t

@3:00 little bit of history for those who don't know. This was game 5 but Logic used the tourney rules which let you restart a match that had been paused. He beat Judo in the rematch and people were not happy.

I remember that pause that 3:06. It was an accidental pause by the Sheik player, where the Olimar claimed that he could've SDI and survive, and since the Sheik paused, he had to lose a stock (and thus, the game). Iirc the Olimar ended up winning due to the rules because of that pause, sadly.
The event organizers ruled that they would replay the final match and Logic (Olimar) ultimately won handedly, much to the crowds displeasure. However, even people at the event knew in real time that Judo (Sheik) would've won without the pause.

They're right though. If you pause, even if its during the killing hit, that stock is considered immediately forfeit, aka before the other person dies. Is it shitty to make someone lose over a little bit of playful disrespect? Yes, obviously. However, everyone knows the rules, and if the winning player knowingly doesn't follow them, they got no one but themselves to blame if their opponent claims the win. Don't hate the player, hate the game.
