Harbaugh couldn't ever help out Waddle with ball placement. Everything is a bit late and a bit high. "Good luck, Tommy." *crunch* Waddle would've had a great little career if he'd played in a real org for passing like San Francisco. He'd still catch everything thrown at him but wouldn't be hung up to dry by mediocre QBs on every target.
Waddle was by far my favorite NFL player as a kid. I ended up playing small time college ball DIII in Chicago. As a 6ft, 170lb receiver with white man disease, I relished going over the middle like my idol and earning my place. Takes some balls to go across the middle. Takes major balls to go across the middle in the NFL and go airborne for a catch. Much respect.
Oh, man. I was JUST looking for some highlights of Waddle. He is still probably my favorite player, ever. What an awesome player, and a wonderful inspiration! And he's great on the radio, too! I'm 40! I'm a man!
He's like Rocky, just getting his ass kicked on every single catch... and holding onto the ball, getting back up for more. He played when you can deliver helmet to helmet hits... he caught it without sticky gloves... and landed the old turf which was like a miniature golf surface. The guy wasn't fast but he was a pure WR. Truly a legend in Chicago.
He was basically a 1950's receiver playing in early 1990's NFL. Size, speed, athleticism, etc. was all at about a generation behind. However, he also had 1950's NFL toughness as well.
Not really. He was 6 foot 185lbs which was pretty typical for wide receivers at the time. It's not even that far off what the average receiver is now. And he had plenty of speed and athleticism. He didn't quite have the sprinter level speed that was typical of wide receivers of that era, but he was not slow. He was severely underrated at the time because he wasn't the prototypical sprinter that transitioned into football which was all the rage at the time. He wasn't seen as a top receiver because he was doing things differently than other receivers. He pretty much pioneered the role of possession slot receiver that has been such an essential part of a good team since.
OMG! This was the first Lions game I ever went to. Thanksgiving heavyweight Defensive slugfest 16-6 final between 2 teams fighting for the NFC Central. I remember Lomas Brown giving a speech before the game to Mike Utley who got paralyzed that year.
There’s a game I can’t remember what game it was but he caught a game winning touchdown from harbaugh from about 10 yards out I can find it though I can’t remember what year either.. it’s not the long catch vs Vikings. It was at soldier field--- Edit::I found the game it was 1992vs Detroit week 1.. game winning catch about 7 yards out with 5 seconds left I remember I was so excited about it as a child
I agree about 670 and espn 1000 definitely being geared towards whites and I find that extremely unfortunate because like you said it's leaving many chicago sports fans left out of the picture. god bless man
@VeteransAgainstKonop : Dave made a bunch of bad moves ... Waddle was great!.. loved watching him play. The Bears, who freaking cut him (and every other team that didn't pick him up) were stupid BLIND not to have made him a long term contract. .. the NFL needs more Tom Waddle's.
waddle great hands and fearless up the middle and great hands! didn't see fred belinekoff play, but a poor mans version of him. same style of course not a hall of famer.
Why did Da Coach cut this guy so many times? IMO the crop of "other" receivers available were just that much more terrible or Tommy here was just that damn good!
First off, He caught the damn ball all the time, second of all the reason he's got a job is because he has great journalistic skills for a former NFL player. If you are trying to imply the only reason the reason he got a job is because he is white, thats just bull. He was a fan favorite here in Chicago just like Mike Brown, Lance Briggs, Hester and whoever else. And anyone of those players who want to give broadcasting a shot would most likely get a job here in chicago as well.
Jim Harbaugh killed Tom Waddle with high passes down the middle of the field. Sad he didn't last long in the NFL. He had great hands, not a good player in avoiding getting hit.
Never watched him play til now but he's the best guy in radio!

1/2 of the tackles Waddle went through today would draw 15-yard penalties for helmet to helmet or horsecollar.
WOW! Tom Waddle was a tough SOB! I was too young to watch him play, but he might be my new favorite receiver of all time.
Tom Waddle was one of my favorite players as a kid, I also loved Donnell Woolford as well. because no one was as tough as those 2 athletes!!
OMG!
I was at this game.
My first Lions game I went to.
This was a defensive struggle.
Best Lions season I can remember.
Damn, Waddle took more helmet to helmet hits in his career than anyone!

Tom Waddle was a wildman

Thanksgiving 1991 I ate a lot of food and drank plenty this day. Bears lost IIRC. The beginning of the end of the Ditka era.
DAMN this guy was tough
Motivational performance.
mike...any chance I can get a copy of this entire game from you? one of my favorite tom waddle game.....td
this guy is my friends uncle
@qmitch2 Actually, this WAS on Thanksgiving.
Waddle was a beast but he looked like he never lifted a weight in his life.lol,he was like 150 pounds out there.
does anyone else think Dane Sanzenbacher will be the next waddle?
waddle great hands and fearless up the middle and great hands! didn't see fred belinekoff play, but a poor mans version of him. same style of course not a hall of famer.
As Fran Tarkenton says... Tom Waddle is always right
Jim Harbaugh should be charged with attempted murder, he hung Tommy out to dry, I loved this shit as kid,
Why did Da Coach cut this guy so many times? IMO the crop of "other" receivers available were just that much more terrible or Tommy here was just that damn good!
Slow speed.
@DCMPdotcom
Sanzenwaddle... Hopefully without the concussions.
@NuRm69 THAT EXPLAINS IT !!!!!
Wow, CBS top broadcast team (SUMMERAL & MADDEN) doing a non-thanksgiving Lions game. That was rare !!!!
This game was played on Thanksgiving 1991
If Harbaugh was such a crappy QB, he wouldn't have hung Waddle out to dry so many times.
anybody could beat the bears. the packers will probably win by 40 points. I am not going to even watch. why?
